I never understand why movies don’t use proper Gatling gun sounds. Movies always go for an electronic whirring sound, but when you hear one IRL it sounds so much cooler
@zeriel9148 Жыл бұрын
Funny thing is explosions are rather similar: the high fireball/gas explosion people see in movies is actually LESS impressive than the much smaller explosion but huge shockwave of force in reality, which our instincts tell us is lethally dangerous, not to mention aweinspiring. I think the usual explanation for these unrealistic things that become common while not even being more impressive is that people build up an expectation of how things are supposed to look from cinema. So it becomes a self-perpetuating myth where people who have never seen it IRL expect it to look like it does in movies, and any movie not doing that is going to have most people think it looks fake.
@matthewgardner5983 Жыл бұрын
It’s generally because the filmmakers don’t want anyone to get confused. The general public doesn’t know what a Gatling cannon sounds like, but they’d recognize a more stereotypical sound.

This KZbinr sound design is pretty amateurish. It just uses more realistic gun sounds. The timing is way off. The people who worked on the movie had way more professional sound editing than this homemade one. They just made an artistic choice to use different gun sounds. That doesn't mean their sound editing timing is not 10x better than this amateur one. Sound editing is not just about authenticity. A large part of sound design is also about the technical execution. You can use the most realistic sound possible but it'll still sound like garbage if you don't time it and mix it correctly. That's not a skill any home movie maker can obtain. Which still won’t explain why the Sidewinder dropped off the rail as it launched. Before the F-22 and F-35 all AIM-9s used, get ready for this, _rails_ for mounting on the aircraft. That means when the motor ignites the missile accelerates straight down the rail till both mounting tabs are clear. It does not fall away from the aircraft and then ignite. Loved the compressor stall alarm when Maverick "split the throttles". 🤣I remember sort of giggling to myself in the theater and thinking "Welp, there's a flame out." Also love the addition of all the extra RWR tones you added in. I remember being surprised that they added in ANY of the F-14 RWR sounds at all, there's a couple bits where you can hear them in this scene in the movie. F-14A engines were notorious for compressor stalls when making rapid throttle position changes like that, especially in high alpha regimes. Definitely a very "Top Gun" move, just like "hitting the brakes, he'll fly right by." I can look past it because the movie is loaded with charm, just like the first one.

@@sen_ex so the guy is talking about the split throttle maneuver which is absolutely a real thing however he is 100 percent correct that going one full burner one to idle immediately is gonna cause a compressor stall. Which is where the engine will go kaput at least temporarily and probably cause a flat spin. What the actual maneuver is is you have one engine on full burner the other you bring to mil power aka full power without afterburner to get that extra roll capability

The guns in the movie are balanced with the overall sound design. The authentic ones are more jarring and regular audiences won't care
@AdmiralValdemar Жыл бұрын
Yeah, typically guns go ratatatatatatata, because most people are hearing something like an M60. Very few films show Gatling guns or high cyclic rate autocannons with their real sound effects, because people would be confused by the sheer rate of fire merging all sounds into a ripping effect.
@qactus4031 Жыл бұрын
@Syntex366 Yeah but at this point this is just a director's dillema. Cars physically can't blow up even if you shoot directly at them, but if you don't have a car explode even just a little after being light up, audience are gonna think you're wrong. So all cars in cinema explode and at this point no one can really do anything about it.
@hyperx72 Жыл бұрын
@@qactus4031 How does the deep powerful growl of the classic tomcat cannons ruin the scene? Or the blaring missile alerts that add tension? We've already seen Cruise go through the effort of having authentic piloting where G-force is a part of the plot and stakes. Plus, an audience that does care about aviation would love it, and an audience that doesn't care will still hear something powerful and bassy, and likely understand what air combat sounds like. (I know I personally got into air combat through arcade games like Ace Combat 6, which had an exaggerated conflict with unrealistic physics, but had realistic sound design with their weapons and how long distance explosions took a moment to reach you. And now instead of being caught off guard by things like how an A10 gun sounds in videos or long distance explosions I can appreciate how certain media, in a way teaches about this interesting form of action.

The missile in the movie is clearly an AIM-9 Sidewinder, a Russian equivalent is a Vympel K-13. Both Missiles have a Proximity fuse being that Homing Equipment is located in the nose of the Missile a Contact Fuse is not possible. Not to mention a lock isn't required for heat seeking missiles, though a lock can help. Man the gun sounds alone make this so much better. Also, I’d agree on your use of RWR. This is separate to actual radar and radio, and the idea of the F14 going low to confuse the sensors is referring to the use of ground clutter to throw off radar locks. Those SU57’s were originally flying high and probably loaded for BVR engagements to maintain a stand off distance in case anyone flew into the AO, hence the use of R77-1’s, and not Fox 2’s for dogfights. I wouldn’t load up an aircraft with Fox 2’s when my AO is jam packed with friendly SAM’s. I’m sure it’s easier to switch on the RWR in the F14 than the whole radar system (I’m guessing here as I know it’s easy in the F15, 16 & 18, but I’ve not looked at the F14’s system before) so your choice on adding RWR effects makes perfect sense. It’s also worth adding that the growling sidewinder tone is so much better than the lame beeping noise the movie insists on! Shame the F14’s hud symbology wasn’t quite right. I loved this movie, and this scene. Your additions really add to it, nice work!
