The maiden flight of the F-22 Raptor took place on September 7, 1997, at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The aircraft was piloted by Lockheed Martin test pilot, Paul Metz. The F-22 was developed by Lockheed Martin and Boeing as a stealthy, highly maneuverable air superiority fighter.
The F-22's first flight was a significant milestone in the development of the aircraft. The flight lasted for around 50 minutes, during which the aircraft performed a series of maneuvers to test its flight characteristics and systems. The F-22 performed well, with no major issues reported during the flight.
The F-22 Raptor is considered to be one of the most advanced fighters in the world. It is designed to be stealthy, highly maneuverable, and able to fly at supersonic speeds without using afterburners. The aircraft is also equipped with advanced avionics and weapons systems, making it a formidable opponent in air-to-air combat.
The F-22's first flight was a major achievement for the United States Air Force and the companies involved in its development. The aircraft has since gone on to become a key component of the U.S. Air Force's air superiority fleet. The F-22 is currently in service with the United States Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force.
The maiden flight of the F-22 marked the beginning of a new era in air superiority fighters, and the aircraft continues to be a vital asset to the U.S. military. The F-22's advanced capabilities and stealth capabilities are a testament to the capabilities of modern aircraft technology and the dedication of the engineers and pilots who developed and fly the aircraft.

The f35 is great for what it is. It's not a dog fighter, it's an electronic warfare stealth fighter that shouldn't be within visual range of their adversary unless something has gone very wrong. One thing everyone likes to overlook is that the f35 can get in closer than a Gen 4 or helicopter could undetected and they're then able to act as a forward scout and redirect med-long range missiles from apaches, etc onto enemy targets. This is a huge capability because in addition to its own limited payload of missiles, it can stay on station for redirecting munitions until it's bingo fuel. Additionally, when the f35 came up against the s400 it absolutely spoofed the sh!t out of it but all the people who love to hate the 35 will *never* mention that.... or likely deny it anyway. Regardless, it is what it is. It's not a technology demonstrator, it's not advanced as the F-22, because it doesn't need to be. It's for export so the tech can't be the same as our top planes. Also not every plane needs to be a stealthy fighter that costs 250mm a unit to build and more importantly 60k per operating hour. The f35 is half that and once the first air battles are over, the b21s and f22s are overkill and very expensive. Hence the f35 Lastly that comment about a fart in church being sexier is pretty funny lol

I worked for Lockheed on the YF-22 from 1984-1987. Back then, it was a much different airplane - much lighter & no thrust vectoring. The thrust vectoring was added shortly before I left. I worked briefly with Tom Morgenfeld, the pilot that later crashed due to the oscillation. He was a great pilot, but I do have to say that in the simulator he had a tendency to "try things" that were not on the test plan - putting the plane into combinations of modes that had not yet been tested. In the simulator, that's cool - we need that sort of feedback from the pilots. I'm NOT saying that's what happened in the YF-22 crash and I don't think Tom would purposefully do that in an actual flight test. But, I can say that it is definitely possible for a bad combination of modes to happen in a prototype flight control system. The Lockheed test pilots at that time were the best in world - Hal Farley, Dave Ferguson, Tom Morgenfeld and others. Fun times!

Great documentary, but just a summary of the actual F-22 development. I entered USAF Civil Service in 1977 as a mechanical/aerospace engineer, initially working propulsion design & analysis on the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program. This was the lead-in development effort for what became the F-22A Raptor. It was constant effort to prove the worthiness of the thrust vectoring to decision makers. As development progressed so did the projected Gross Weight, the thrust vectoring nozzles were heavy and were in constant threat of being removed. I constantly had to generate analysis that showed the expanded envelope and maneuverability. I supported the development and evaluation of the F-22A throughout my career. I was instrumental in bringing the F-22 ACS to WPAFB and had the opportunity to fly the ACS F-22 simulator many times. It's an amazing beast!

Americas leaders should have at least built 350 of the F-22 , because we sure could use them today. I know we have the FX-fighter program and the NGAD program as well along with many other programs, known and unknown. But it still doesn’t negate the fact just how much just having another 214 F-22 airframes would come in pretty handy and much needed . It’s mind blowing just knowing how this fighter built back in 1996 is still today king of the sky /skies today ! Nothing fielded by our enemies even comes close ! I believe given the global environment we live in today and only having 186 F-22’s currently battle ready another 214 F-22’s would come in pretty handy !

Man that Raptor is a sexy beast, but I would've also loved to see what an operational F-23 would've looked like. The YF-22 went through a few design changes before it became the F-22 Raptor that we know today. One of the biggest was the placement of the intakes. They were pushed further back from the cockpit on the final production Raptor.

Even if I don't have any experience in air to air combat I feel like the future of air to air combat that is foreseeable is in terms of being able to fly at high speeds in 1 direction But in mere seconds be able to turn 180 degrees to face opponents launch a rocket aimed at the opponents then turn around 180 and continue flying forward The likely hood of this idea probably won't ever exist because nothing like this will happen in reality

Great video! Dude you don't live in middle earth.... Say ALUMINUM right.
@Dronescapes
@Dronescapes Жыл бұрын
Phonetically, the correct pronunciation of aluminum is “alʊmɪnəm,” while the pronunciation for aluminium is “ælʊmɪniəm.” Aluminum is currently the favored pronunciation of the general public in America and Canada, yet aluminum still stands throughout the rest of the English-speaking world. American and Canadian English differ significantly in linguistic rules, and there are nearly 4,000 words spelled differently between Britain and North America. British English keeps spellings inherited from other languages like French and German, while American English usually focuses on spelling words based on how they sound when spoken. These differences became popularized in the 1700s and 1800s with the printing of “An American Dictionary of the English Language” by Noah Webster in North America and “A Dictionary of the English Language” by Samuel Johnson. However you prefer to pronounce the word representing this chemical element, you likely interact with it every day, from tin foil for cooking in your oven to riding in an airplane. The fascinating origin of aluminum is just one part of the story as scientists and manufacturers around the world mine this product from the Earth’s crust to provide the building blocks of 21st-century society. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) officially standardized on aluminium in 1990, though it hasn’t changed the way that Americans spell it for day to day purposes. Even though scientists generally use “ium” spelling, the IUPAC does recognize the “um” spelling as a variant. It seems a fair compromise. While both the “um” and the “ium” endings are both accepted forms of spelling, the debate of “who is right” wages on. It’s clear that neither side is going to give up the way they spell this word.

@mic stone Settle down there, Winston Churchill. I knew it would touch a nerve for someone. The UK has 48 billion dollar defense spending . This limits competition against the USA. The UK makes fine airplane s, but we invented flights, and we dominate the sky. It isn't an opinion. The F22 is the best 5th generation fighter built and the F35 is the best computer fighter ever. The F35 is being sold to what 7 or 8 countries, including Germany. We have the best Stealth programs and best bombers. You did see the new B21 right? It's all good we are on the same team but the US is the world's leading aircraft manufacturer.

Learn how to say aluminum. It’s not al u minium lol 😂 now if the yf23 had thrust vectoring………hands down winner.
@Dronescapes
@Dronescapes Жыл бұрын

F-22 is able when facing faster fighters, like J-20, to achieve air superiority by itself or by integrating a fleet of A.I. planes, especially if deployed from land bases, like Guam.

The F-22 raptor is a stealth fourth-generation plane, capable to conduct a swarm of other A.I. airplanes, from an aircraft carrier sustaining heavy-duty demands in order to cope with excellent deployment offensive striking incremental capacity for destruction of artificial Islands and defending Guam, for instance. F-22 is an optimal solution when integrating a full marines amphibious transport ship, coupled with helicopter stealth carriers, to secure ground.

@SD 3 The F-22 is more stealthy than the F-35, and the F-22 can also perform ground attack roles and electronic warfare. The F-35 excels in the situational awareness category, considering its computers are lightyears ahead of the 80's technology the Raptors have. Now if they would build a Raptor and stuff it with the F-35's tech...... 👀

In the pilot's seat, the Raptor's "brain" takes the pilot input and translates that into what deflections in the control surfaces to make to achieve that. Very early testing of the airplane, in the manual said, "You can fly this airplane with reckless abandon" and that was true. The horizontal stabilators are larger than most fighter wings!

@@James-sn5mg The shape leads me to believe the F-22 is a little more stealthy out of the two, which was what the U.S. military wanted and needed at the time. It was absolutely fundamental. They also needed the aircraft to supercruise indefinitely in flight, (For as long as it has the fuel to do so) which the F-22 did faster than the F-23. F-23 Top Speed - 1,451 mph F-22 Top Speed - 1,500 mph The F-22 also has thrust vectoring nozzles, the F-23 did not, matter of fact it had traditional fixed engines.
