Every jet is built for a specific purpose and a specific need. The Eurofighter typhoon in the hands of a skilled, well trained pilot of a modern day air force can be the deciding factor between a military victory and a shellacking. The F22 is a plane that is in existence for the use of an Air force that aims not to simply win battles but dominate conflicts. It's as much a weapon for destruction as is it a tool for deterrence.

Stephen Lode I'm from Phoenix, AZ and went to college at Cornell (Ithaca, NY) from 2000-2004. As you can imagine, shit was CRAZY at the airports in the northeast after 9/11. I was heading home for Christmas from Newark Int'l Airport in 2001 on either a 747 or maybe 757, and an F-16 taxied onto our runway right in front of us. We were still perpendicular to it as we waited, as were next to turn onto the runway to take off. Therefore, I had a perfect view of that single turbofan lighting up as the pilot hit the afterburner, and - no bullshit - took off completely vertically (I'm pretty sure that jet has a positive thrust-to-weight ratio). What made it infinitely cooler was he appeared to take absolutely no rolling start whatsoever. It was armed too. I could see what I can only imagine were AIM-9s on the hard points. Needless to say I got chills and was unable to stop myself as I shouted out: "FUCK YEAH AMERICA"

F-22 crushes the Typhoon for airshow displays. The first time I saw F-22 flight demo, I thought I was about to see a major disaster when it took off, lurched into the vertical, then seemed to hover without gaining altitude. Looked like it was going to do a tail slide at too low of an altitude, but the pilot just throttled forward and nosed over like it was nothing...from a standstill. The square loop, MRT, J turns, drifts, pedal turns, and high AOA maneuvers all exceed what a Typhoon can do.

@@marcustrevor1883 The Typhoon is an impressive culmination of most of the 4th Gen fighter technology. It still behaves conventionally at the extreme edge of its performance envelope. When you see the F-22 flight demo, it behaves nothing like anything we had seen before on the edge of its limits, doing AOA and yaw regime maneuvers that looked like it was out-of-control, yet it is fully under control at all times. The only fighters that do similar maneuvers are the Su-35 and first phase Su-57 prototypes. 2nd Phase Su-57s got heavier and more sluggish, and they don't show aggressive demos with them yet that we've seen. The Typhoon has to be totally stripped of combat stores in order to achieve a comparable climb rate to the F-22, whereas the F-2 behaves as if it was combat-configured at all times since it uses internal weapons that are minuscule in mass compared to its fuel fraction. Fuel fraction is the ratio of fuel to the overall aircraft weight. The F-22A carries 18,000lbs of fuel internally. 6 x AIM-120 and 2 x AIM-9 doesn't add up to much compared to that (1804lbs), and none of them contribute to parasitic drag like on a 4th Gen fighter, so your performance is the same with or without them, especially considering the F-22's maximum combined thrust of 70,000lb.

Quick edit on the F-22's top speed. What they tell you is MACH 1.8. What you don't know is this is in fact the supercruise. In full afterburner, said speed is unknown. That or the USAF won't tell us.

The yf-23 was faster with the General Electric engines than the yf-22 during the trials, only after the yf-22 won the contract and started producing production models did the F-22 outpace the yf-23. the USAF wanted a dogfighter which the raptor was better at, but the strategy of stealth kills from afar, came into view during the production model trials. which the YF-23 would have been superior at as it was faster and stealthier.

Umm no! You're comparing apple's to oranges. The F-22 is a purpose built air superiority fighter. The odds of these 2 meeting in the merge are simply astronomical. F-15 pilots have gone up against 1 F-22 and were completely outclassed. 5 and 6 to 1 odds and they were (killed) without ever having seen the F-22. Part of it's ability is psychological, if an opponent believes there is a stealth fighter in the area and has no chance of locating or much less targeting it things become very unpleasant for that individual. It was a fun video though.

It depends on some other factors. An F-15X with the aid of data links from supporting modern ground and air radars would be able to detect and track an F-22 at medium range while having vastly more firepower that could overwhelm the stealth fighter pilot. In a more neutral scenario with both unassisted the F-22 has an advantage but the gap is much narrower than with older legacy F-15C. Typhoon has some upgrades that have significantly improved performance and it could also have some chance against an F-22 in a scenario where it has local support. Of course none of these fine aircraft should ever go up against each other anyways. The more pertinent question is how they would fair against likely opposition such as Su-27 derived aircraft. In that case The F-22 is likely to have a larger advantage but the Typhoon will nevertheless result in more enemy kills and F-15X having the most kills because of weapons loads available. F-22 and F-15X working together could result in the most kills with the least losses as the stealth aircraft designates targets for the F-15X to take down from extreme range.

With a significantly larger total wing area, double the available thrust, and vectoring, wouldn't the F-22 be able to turn inside the Typhoon? How did you calculate the performance of each fighter? You awarded the typhoon for climbing but at 318 fps, its slower than the F-22's 350 fps!! That's just... moving on! What do you mean by energy conservation? Are you saying that the Typhoon has less drag? What characteristics and properties does it have and what type of energy is conserved? The Typhoon is an excellent and gorgeous fighter. The F-22 can and has won training games against multiple F-15Cs... If you let that sink in I think it looks like this is not an evaluation that gives us insight into the best deployment of these two. The F-22 would play the dominant air superiority role, intercepting and killing whatever needs dead. The typhoon is a fantastic multi-role fighter and even lacking true stealth capability, is a formidable and deadly fighter.

I find the consideration of energy fighting a bit nonsense. The purpose of energy fighting is to gain a position the enemy does not have enough energy to get on target. This usually means that you are trying to get above the enemy. However, the F-22 has thrust vectoring, so if the Typhoon were to attempt extending the distance, the F-22 would get a radar lock, and if the Typhoon tried to gain altitude over the F-22, the F-22 would simply use its high TWR, thrust vectoring, and angle of attack to get the nose up and fire. I simply don't see the Typhoon winning any dogfight.

That's the problem with these comparison videos. 50 years ago the Raptor would be a classified aircraft that nobody even knew about. But it's nearly impossible today to have a secret aircraft. But they keep some of its capabilities secret. Most of the time the f22 flies without it's full stealth capability. So nations like China and Iran can't practice tracking it.

Performance parameters (unless otherwise stated) are usually calculated with a "fighter"/"interceptor" armament (ie 2 IR guided short-range missiles, and 4 AR guided medium range missiles) and internal fuel (either full or half capactiy).

@Bobby Brady im not sure you completely understand. The f16 is an amazing aircraft, no doubt. It cannot and doesn't touch a Typhoon in any form. It is considerably slower, its flight envelope isn't as large, its ceiling is lower, its rate if climb is massively slower, its weapons systems are not as impressive or advanced. Have a quick look at operation red flag👍 The f16 is however a fantastic airframe, desired the world over. It can pull 9 g's, it is cheap to produce. Can it live with a Typhoon? Not in the same bracket

Yes it may depend on the aircraft being flown but the main difference and factor is how skilled the pilot is. If u put a highly skilled pilot against a less skilled one, no matter which Jet they're flying, the highlh skilled pilot would win. Its all down to how good the pilot is and how well he can conserve his weaponry aswell as use of his technical abilities

Being a Brit you'd think I would be biased? Not at all. I think it could be quite a close cut comparison, both of the tools having their own good and bad points. The thing that scares me the most with the Raptor (aptly named) is the bloody price, but shoving that out of the way. The Avionic suites on both of the tools are quite impressive, for the time they were designed. Somewhat backward of what is available today. In reality it is all down to the skill and experience of the lucky sod sat in the operators seat. It would certainly be beyond incredible to watch (if they were in visual, of course) these beautifully cut pieces of composite material do the things they were designed to do. Both the U.S of A and the Brits have had for a long, long time an ability to manufacture battle winning Aircraft. I would have to say both the Tools, under the right conditions could well be upon par. What would have been a better comparison would have been how the two would match up to the notorious SU37/57/T50 (pac fa). Hardly a fair comparison... the Typhoon costs roughly $185 million each (program cost for the UK divided by the number of aircraft) compared to $360 million each for the F-22 (calculated in the same way). So the F-22 is effectively twice as expensive as the Typhoon, so a fairer comparison would be 2x Typhoons vs 1x F-22. Also, comparing stuff like length and wingspan is meaningless and shouldn't be used in any comparison beyond the toddler's edition of top trumps. What you neglected to factor in was mass. The F-22 might be much more powerful but it's also a much heavier aircraft, weighing about 29 tonnes loaded compared to 16 tonnes for the Typhoon, so the F-22's power to weight is only 1.08 vs 1.15 for the Typhoon (both in fighter configuration with full internal fuel). And then there is wing loading, which affects manouverability (if they get to winin dogfighting range). Again the F-22's mass hurts it badly, with 377 kg/m^2 vs 312 kg/m^2 than the smaller and lighter Typhoon. Then there is the stealth question, a 300km missile isn't going to do the Typhoon much good if it can't see the F-22 till it's 20km away. Equally, the "200km radar" (which doesn't actually mean it will see Typhoon at 200km, just something like a B-52 or Tu-95) of the F-22 will be practically useless, because as soon as it turns it on, it's sending out a beacon for the enemy to locate it, so it will be relying on targeting info from AWACS (come to think of it is the perfect target for a 300km range missile...) or ground-based radar. It will be a bit like a game of cat-and-mouse, each side trying to take out each other's radar spotters.

I believe this is incorrect, the thrust to weight ratio of an F22 is around 1.72. I believe it is the most of any fighter, and is why it can super cruse without the use of afterburner. It's also why it can come to a complete stop in the air, and then regain its energy w/o having to point its nose towards the earth.

The Eurofighter with IRIS-T can simply shoot down incoming missiles so the F22 has no chance since the Eurofighter can carry more IRIS-T than the F22 can carry AA missiles. Also the Eurofighter has Meteor which is just about the best long range AA missile out there. Not to mention that the EF also has a towed decoy and lots of electronic warfare systems to counter incoming missiles. In the end the F22 is only stealthy from certain angles and even then it still has to shot rockets which can be countered so the stealth of the F22 makes it fatter and slower but gives it no advantage in the real world.

If it happens to be a Typhoon operated by one of the nations that use the IRIS-T then it can launch that IRIS-T missile to intercept the AMRAAM with a high chance of success. Unlike other short to medium range IR missiles the IRIS-T can not only be used against aircraft but also against small targets such as A2A missiles, SAMs, drones or S2S missiles. The Ukraine is currently using the IRIS-T SL air defense system, a surface launched variant of the IRIS-T used by the Typhoon. So with that being said and the Typhoon's far superior defense suite compared to the almost non-existent F-22's defense subsystems a merge within visual range may not always be avoidable for the F-22 even if it fires the first shot. After a merge the Typhoon not only is the more agile and efficient aircraft, it also has the capability of launching it's IRIS-T missiles at extreme off boresight angles 360° all around, which the F-35 can do but F-22 to this day still cannot do. Not exactly a very fair dog fight when one jet has to work hard in order to point the nose towards the opponent, while the other can simply shoot missiles 'out of his a...' I mean 'towards the rear'. Let's also not forget that both aircraft will typically not operate without networking and receiving external targeting information. With several modern radar systems capable of detecting stealth fighters like the F-22 at considerable distances chances are that a Typhoon, especially when operating in European airspace will know of the F-22s presence well before the Typhoon's own on- board sensors can detect it. With the Lock On After Launch (LOAL) capable MBDA meteor missile's range outclassing any missile the F-22 can carry this potentially gives the Typhoon the advantage of being able to strike first should the F-22 be detected and the Typhoon be provided (approximate) data of location and heading via the network. Last but not least, F-22s have been flying around without any stealth coating a lot lately, making them rather non-stealthy 4.5th gen aircraft much like the Typhoon. But to be fair, in times of conflict the stealth coating on F-22s in (combat) operation would probably be repaired.

I worked for a contractor on the Savannah airport. I got to watch the f22s take off from the airbase that's right there. And when they take off, they go straight up. But what really blew my mind was watching them turn. It literally looked like they were going 45 miles an hour through a round about. Amazing how it didnt crash. That thing turned on a dime. No disrespect to the eurofighter, but the raptor would win before he even saw it. And in the odd chance he didnt, that thrust vectoring will make all the difference.

No! I've seen both at airshows too. Which tells you nothing about performance in true combat. The videos conclusions are valid in my opinion. BVR the Typhoon would be screwed. But dogfighting the Typhoon would come out on top. Yes the F22 has vectored thrust, but with helmet mounted sights and off boresight capability the vectored thrust capability is negated. The F22 is also bigger and heavier and bleeds energy quicker. German Tyhoon pilot Marc Grune commented after red flag where the Typhoon scored a number of kills against the F22... “As soon as you get to the merge … the Typhoon doesn’t necessarily have to fear the F-22”. The problem in the merge is that the F22 bleeds a lot of speed that leaves it vulnerable.

It is much more complex than just compare specs. The F22 is not equally stealth form any angle, and the typhoon can easily use data from another detector at the side or above the F-22, another typhoon passively tracking it from the side with the pirate.... Equally the F-22 can use other tactics, but they pretty much depend on stealth since their weapon loadout is really limited so is the combat persistence due to the huge fuel comsumption (double engine power for the same performance).

Negative lol. I can see it being better than the f35 seeing how it’s not a fighter jet. But the f22 is fucking crazy. It can do super low speed maneuvers where it almost seems like it’s hovering and then it can kick it into super go fast mode and disappear. I hate these comparisons because the vast majority of civilians have never seen how insane the f22 really is. I’m stationed at Eglin afb in Florida and they’ve done demos for us on those cheesy “morale boost” days. But this thing legit boosted morale. To see it totally dominate an f16 was unbelievable.

Typhoon carries Chaff and Flare (and soon, brightcloud), and also ASRAAM, AMRAAM, Meteor, Storm shadow, PW IV. Im sure the F22 also carried stuff you havenet mentioned.

Wrong on two counts. They *have* met in mock battles against each other, twice, at two seperate Red Flag exercises. The Typhoons won both encounters. Both times with RAF pilots at the controls.

Well, first you would need to get the Raptor off the ground. Anyone here involved in the maintenance of the aircraft knows what I am talking about. 2nd, The Raptor's avionics date back to the 1990s. We are talking old core 25 Mhz processors. That architecture has been a real pain in the ass when it comes to compatibility issues with the new gen missiles and there are HUGE BUGS which are being kept hush-hush. In regard to the new and upgraded radars, they may detect targets at 200+ KM in paper, but in real life, the lack of processing power means the plane can not take full advantage of the radar's full prowess at distance and # targets it can really track, and in the words of David Majumdar (defense editor for the National Interest) "The jet’s avionics need to be completely revamped, not just because they’re obsolete, but also because the jet’s antique processors and other components haven’t been made in decades. That would be a very expensive proposition." Discuss...

Both those planes are ageing now and as far as I know neither is still in production. Deciding which is best is no brainer though, I think I’d rather still have the security of stealth even if the typhoon was better in every other way lol

The raptors rapor at beginning was only like 250km but the apg77v on all fighting raptors can pick up 1m2 at 450km!!!! Major difference and facts not being shared correctly here to make typhoon feel better. Lol

Would be cheaper than trying to maintain equipment thats no longer made. I worked on old A-6's and the Navy would have to contract out to whoever made that item, for a special run of that part. It was both expensive and took forever to get those parts in. Better to Upgrade IMO, and take full advantage of what the plan can really do. Cost of upkeep on the plane is whats going to kill the best fighter ever made. Honestly we are almost to the point a new bird needs to be made, and F22 retired.

Just bc the F-22 Raptor was built in the 90s and was discontinued doesn't mean that they aren't upgraded with modern technology comparable to that of the F-35 Lightning. They were built knowing technology would improve so new technology could be implanted in the nose of the plane where nearly all of the controls are. Take a look at the new F-15X which was built in the 70s and rebuilt with modern technology.

I'm thinking the typhoon with infrared tracking could possible track heat signatures of the air and turbulence friction heat around the F-22 fuselage in far distance fight so the f-22 would have to close the gap low flying do to air temperature's above 1,000 feet .

The best case scenario for UK 6th Gen is a joint project with the US, because even we with our $719 billion budget are already looking wearily at the PCA. We should consider a US/Canada/UK PCA program that satisfies NORAD and UK airspace defense, as well as the PCA mission profiles. You can trade speed for endurance as the mission demands with the same airframe, while cooperatively funding and supporting the defense industries of all 3 nations. Maybe even get Australia and Japan on board.

They've recently merged RAF with Royal Navy air power, and still don't have that kind of budget for developing the next generation fighter technology being discussed. UK's total defence budget was just increased to £37.9 billion. That has to pay for everything including QE carrier, F-35Bs, Typhoons, ships, the Army, Royal Marines, etc. There simply isn't even close to enough money to take on Tempest.

The Eurofighter is the best, it can do everything. Some Example's to show why the Eurofighter is king, few years reading reports and papers and speaking with pilots themselves on the matter, and all can be found online Paper's and Reports open to read. The Specs of the Eurofighter vs F-22 for example and some others to compare. Speed / Eurofighter - 1550 mph - Mach 2.0 TMS. F-22 - 1495 mph - Mach 1.95 TMS. Rafale - 1381 mph - Mach 1.8 TMS. F-16 - 1500 mph - Mach 1.95 TMS. F-35 - 1200 mph - Mach 1.56 TMS. Altitude Ceiling / Eurofighter 65,000 f. F-22 65,000 f. Rafale 50,000f. F-16 50,000+f. F-35 50,000f. The Sustained and Instantaneous Turn Rates, reports and papers that I've read over the years, state some what different numbers to others, so I've found the mid of the numbers for a ( about number ), for example the Eurofighter some reports and papers say between 26 to 31 D/S, so about 28.5 D/S and again for the F-22 between 25 to 29.5 D/S so about 27 D/S. But just to say that yes the F-22 uses 1D Thrust Vectoring, but the Eurofighter had the highest number, in most reports and papers, but I'll get to why Thrust Vectoring on the F-22 is not something you want to trust in, due to its quick energy bleed and loss of speed quite fast, and if it does not get in to position quickly, it's like a sitting duck. Sustained Turn Rate / Eurofighter - about 28.5 D/S. F-22 - about 27 D/S. Rafale - about 27 D/S. F-16 - about 18 D/S. F-35 - about 11 to 16 D/S. Instantaneous Turn Rate / Eurofighter - about 36.5 D/S. F-22 - about 35 D/S. Rafale - about 36 D/S. F-16 - about 26 D/S. F-35 - about 26.5 D/S. There where some examples of how different jet's line up, now focusing more on the Eurofighter vs F-22. Engine Thrust / Eurofighter 21,500 ibf x2. F-22 35,000 ibf x2. Plus the Eurofighter's EJ200 Engines are the most advanced, with a reliability rate of over 1000 hours and still performance like new. Eurofighter is lighter and smaller so a higher Thrust to weight ratio. The Eurofighter has better range / Combat and A to B. The Eurofighter Has a Better Dive/Cilmb Rate with better energy hold. G's and -G's. Eurofighter 9+ and -3.5G's. F-22 9+ and -3.2G's. Most jet's can pull 9+ G's but only some can high -G's. Hard Points / Eurofighter 13. F-22 8. Gun / Eurofighter x1 27mm with 150 rounds. F-22 x1 20mm with 480 rounds. Missiles BVR - WVR / Eurofighter BVR Meteor Missile the best in the world x2 ranges 1st 150km for fast agile Targets 2nd in testing showed to go 300km for other Targets, The Biggest NEZ of 60km, Speed of Mach 4.5, more Agile then the AIM-120D, as well the Meteor uses a ramjet meaning it maintains power to the target, WVR the ASRAAM Faster then the AIM-9X and more agile between 5 to 55km, and the ASRAAM is a 6.5inch diameter vs the 5inch on the AIM-9X so about a 70% more volume rocket propellant, meaning a longer burn time. F-22 BVR AIM-120D 1x range Maxed at 160km a NEZ of 20km, and a speed of Mach 4, WVR AIM-9X more agile under 5km, range 30+km. And both AIM-9X and ASRAAM use a IR seeker, so heat seeking and the ASRAAM and newer 9X's able to be used as LOAL and LOBL with the ASRAAM being able to outperform the 9x in 180 over the shoulder launches, and with the ASRAAM using IR imaging to better its ability. But no pilot will use the full range of their missile, like the 150+km on the Meteor or the 160km on the 120D due to the low chance of really hitting anything, and giving the enemy longer for the RWS's to pick it up and just do a 180 run, making the distance longer for the Missile, you'll want to fire within about 100 - 70km or even 50km, to have a higher chance for the Missile to hit and less time for the enemy to have to counter. This is what I find funny is that people say, ( well this jet can fire from hundreds of miles away and kill it before ) NO, it's Bullshit their are the one's that don't know fuck about RWS's - MTT or even Defences, older 3rd gen jets with old as shit RWS's yes probably, but not 4th gen or 3rd gen with advanced or one of the most advanced RWS's ever in it. Just to point out that the numbers on all missiles like the 120D Meteor R-77 PL-15 and so on, all have a range of what it can do with still the ability to hit a target ( effective range ), but most of the time it's in good weather conditions, so ranges will very. Eurofighter uses the Striker 2 Helmet more advanced and able to lock on to targets and fire with out lining the jet up with the target, and has night vision built in, with out needing a different piece of equipment on the pilots head. F-22 is outdated and old the hardware and software is not there to be able to use the Helmet to lock on and fire like the Eurofighter can, so the F-22 needs to line up to lock and fire. Radar / The Eurofighter uses one of the best Radars out today Captor M most powerfule in its class, able to pick up the F-35 and F-22 from distance, and able to track a multi group of targets at once, plus the new Captor E Radar will and is one of the most powerfule Morden Radars for the Future. F-22 has a good Radar picks up the Eurofighter from distance as well but even though the F-22 may see the Eurofighter at about 200km the 120D's range is 160km max and no pilot will use max range, and with the Eurofighter jamming for example in some exercise the F-22 was not able to get a lock until about 30km away from the Eurofighter, and same with F-22 and most jet's having jamming to stop the lock on's, but the F-22's radar cant handle as much as other radars can, but still can track lots of targets. Plus the Eurofighter has many different radars and systems around the Jet's body, helping it in RWS's and able to see a 360 decrease around the Jet, plus the Eurofighter's new Captor E Radar being able to fire Missiles then turn the jet more then 90 dec and still having the ability of guiding the Missiles to the target, as well as the Striker 2 gives the Eurofighter a bigger advantage in a BVR fight, but the F-22 does not have such abilitys and with just the one radar for fox 1 and fox 3's for example needs to maintain the Radar pointing at its target, meaning the F-22 is getting closer and closer to its target, and does not have IRST like the Eurofighter so the F-22 is blind in the heat seeking area, plus with the Eurofighter's IRST Pirate has a range of over 70 - 100km and able to pick up a stealth jet like the F-22 at 50+km, meaning the Eurofighter can fire a ASRAAM at the F-22, and it being a Imaging IR missile it is harder for the F-22's RWS to pick up on, not impossible but harder to see, the F-22 does not have other systems around the body to help guide any missile after it turns beyond its radar sight, so making the F-22 again having to stay pointing at the enemy getting closer and closer to it, and with the Eurofighter have IFF DASS MIDS LDP DVI VTAS HOTAS and IRST as well as the mean radar and others the Eurofighter is just getting better and better, as well as its specs and proformas. Plus the Eurofighter can use its IRST to help the mean Radar, for example the F-22 due to its stealth does not make it invisible, just need to get closer to see it the Captor M radar about 40+km the IRST about 50+km still BVR, but with the IRST it can if the heat from the F-22's Engines and body, then with the Radar, put all its power on at one sport with the IRST to be able to fire a Meteor missile, then can use the the IR with imaging to see the F--22 then with the radar to guide the Meteor, as well as just using the IRST to fire ASRAAM's over 50+km at the F-22. In War Games the Eurofighter and F-22 have both won against each other in WVR, but the Eurofighter and F-22 have not fought in BVR yet. Design / Eurofighter was designed for Air Dominance and does have some stealth in the design having the smallest RCS against the Rafale and Gripen, with the Wing Design on the Eurofighter it is 20% more efficient then your wing design on the F-22, The Eurofighter is a Swing-Roll as well meaning it can hold both air to air and air to ground payloads at the same time, the F-22 its one or the other. The Eurofighter can do all the F-22 can do plus more, The Eurofighter has better specs better Missiles better Hardware and Software plus is used by the best the RAF. Plus the F-22 is to expensive for the US to upgrade and keep maintaining, the F-22 was stop being made years ago, but the Eurofighter is still being maintained and still being updated with newer and newer Hardware and Software.
