There are regimes, as alluded to here, where multiple pilots have said the F-35 will out-accelerate even an F-22. Too slow and the little wing is too draggy and then too fast and transonic drag takes over. But there is definitely a sweet spot where it's a monster. This is definitely evident in air shows where it obviously has huge power everywhere, but is a little sluggish from low-speed stuff and then looks unstoppable as it builds speed. Like everything, there are compromises in every design prioritization.

Call me crazy but isn’t the 35 NOT built for dogfighting. Everyone talks about what it can’t do but never about what it is capable of. Being superior from far away. Am I wrong?

The cool stuff is classified, hell even the basic stuff you might be able to glean with a trained eye flies over most people's heads (pun unintended, kinda just snuck in there...). The F-35 not being built for dogfighting afaik is closer to a doctrinal statement than a physical one; it didn't prioritize energy-maneuverability with compromise systems, payload, weapons, range, etc. but it wasn't built w/o taking it into account. It also doesn't behave like traditional high energy fighters so it's probably a curve for people transitioning to learn; think we all just need some time and growth

I just don't think it's that capable

The F-35 wasn’t built Primarily for dogfighting but thats not the same as its not built for dogfighting. It can dogfight, but it relies more on slow speed maneuvers unlike the F-16. It comments like these that make people say the F-35 CAN’T dogfight and would loose to the Mig-21

@@X-ForceBro loaded with weapons and fuel, the F-35 is as or more maneuverable than an F-16 loaded with the same.

@@calmain13 no it's not The f-16's the dog fighting King the f-35 has more stealth capability but the F-16 would win in a dog fight hands down are you crazy, 🤣 in a dog fight and have 16 would destroy an f-35 every time but the f-35 can shoot down an F-16 before it pops on radar

Enters a dogfight, doesn't have a canon to shoot with.

Dogfight ≠ gun fight. It refers to the distance between jets, not the weapon systems.

Hey guys I love your work. I wonder if you can get a former F/A-18 pilot who transitioned to F-35s and ask him what its like to BFM in an F-35 This is because former F-16 pilots like yourselves are used to high Energy Viper style BFM. I don’t think the F-35 can do that. The F-35 seems to excel in high AoA slow speed BFM. Much like what a Hornet pilot would be comfortable in Keep em coming

1:27 I'd been learning about them in class but I'd noticed the F-35's body is very close to the definition of a supercritical airfoil rather than some of the more traditional shapes, likely for the internal bay space while still having good transonic behavior. I'm wondering about the small wings because they technically have their benefits as long as the body generates enough lift (granted with a supercritical that's probably not happening until higher than ideal speeds). On another note, I'm also wondering if the EM problem could be solved with more power. The F-35's empty TWR is a little bit lower than most aircraft so maybe with the ECU things'll change. An adaptive engine could probably hold more power up high but it sounds like the SecAF wants to develop the tech under the program; fair choice but maybe in a couple years...

Take what this channel says with a grain of salt. There are verified pilots of the F-35 all over the internet who've come out and stated that it's AoA and THR/WT ratio is really second only to the Raptor, and that it thrashes Vipers and SuperHornets in dogfights.

@@ObiWanShinobi917the important takeaway when comparing agility, is that Vipers, Eagles, Super Hornets, etc .....don't fight in a slick configuration. That's where the strength of the F-35 is, in terms of WVR combat. It doesn't have G/AoA/speed limits, unlike 4th generation jets, not to mention the extra drag/inertia to overcome. It also has a superior fuel fraction, allowing it to stay in afterburner longer to maintain/regain energy.
