Cheers for posting this! I was at Wattisham at the time, the pilot was Flt Lt Archie Liggat, and Navigator Flt Lt Mark Manwaring. Both the Phantom and 74 (F) Sqn are long gone, but the memories remain!

EXCELLENT!!! Used to see him practicing at Leuchars once or twice a day during the run up to the airshow season before the OCU disbanded. It was a pretty legendary display, the ground used to shake when he had reheat on for those low passes. I seem to remember that it caused a bit of a excitement for the old bids of St Andrews though who didn't appreciate the roar of the RR Speys ;-) Fantastic to see it again, cracking video, many thanks for posting it.

What an awesome display. The ultimate Phantom wring-out. Saw it at Mildenhall in 92. Archie Liggat is a God! No worries about the fatigue life at that time. Thanks so much for capturing that.

Great to see this again. I was with Archie and Manners on 74(F) Sqn and both top guys. Archie a Scotsman like myself too. I used to see the display really well from the USSF site just off the base; it must've been in line with one of the lower passes. How Manners managed to concentrate after the trouble during our APC in Akrotiri is beyond my comprehension.

GKHRE. What a stonking display.... An example of what a 'clean' Spey-engined Phantom could do - in the right hands. Almost Lightning like ;) in very marginal weather... Thanks to Rockinravie for posting this..

Not an F-4J. You can see the auxiliary door on the rear of the fuselage fitted for the Spey engines in UK Phantoms. You can also tell by the larger jet pipes. This is the very aircraft pictured at RAF Leuchars in 1992. RAF F-4M FGR.2. www.airliners.net/photo/UK-Air-Force/McDonnell-Douglas-F-4M-Phantom-FGR2/2503859/L

One other comment, if you thought that was low, ask "Fugly" about the back seat ride with John McGarry during the flypast for East Anglia TV in Cyprus. Can't remember if Archie was with us, but McGarry scared the crap out of everyone and Bill (Fugly) Preece was white when he climbed out of the cockpit.

I was Sqn Ops on 228 from August 1988 until it disbanded and John McGarry was THE most laid back guy on the entire Sqn, very funny too.

I can see radar interference on the vid...one awesome plane the Phantom, it was a sad day when they went out of service. The Gate Guardian at RAF Mount Pleasant, Falklands, got pulled apart some time ago (xv409?) I almost cried when that happened...

F4-J was taken out of service with 74 Sqn prior to this date. The a/c in the video is an F-4 FGR Mk2 powered by RR Spey engines.
