DtRockstar1 records the F/A-18 Super Hornet during a flying demonstration at the Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival. It's amazing what this plane can do without thrust vectoring. You'll also see some 700 mph passes, as well as a heritage flight with the Navy's F4U Corsair.

That is one hell of an engineering job. That aircraft has amazing manueverability
@bobojo37

Yep, they basically sacrificed top speed for maneuverability with the wing design. They realized after Vietnam that almost no dogfights occur at supersonic speeds, and F4 Phantoms (with a Mach 2+ capability) were getting outturned and shot down by MiGs that could only just break the sound barrier. So the F-18 and F/A-18 only have a top speed of about 1.6-1.8 Mach, but can turn like much lighter aircraft.

It’s funny you mention that, because the prototype version of this plane was called the YF-17 Cobra. Only two were made. And I definitely agree, those wing extensions on the fuselage are what really set this plane apart.

The F18 F16 AND F15 are great birds of prey. Still love to see these birds with thrust vector , the way they are now their hard to beat , with vectoring don't think anything would beat them as old as they are.

Only the F-18, the F-15 has too little aspect ratio, isn't nearly as lifty as the flankers, and the F-16 is already a far too unstable airframe to have thrust vectoring. Even without thrust vectoring, the flanker is essentially dead even with the F-18C hornet in a pure 1v1 turn fight, with the flanker having the ede in the 2 circle and the F-18 having the edge in the 1 circle. The F-18 is the only plane here where thrust vectoring would benefit its turn performance.

I wish they could upgrade the engines so that the hornet had the thrust of the F-15 E; that would be one hell of a fighter to face off against! Also, conformal fuel tanks would extend the range and maneuverability of the aircraft, since it could fly on longer range missions with a cleaner configuration.

Slightly suprised by the comments, it has a short capability for high AoA flight, maybe about 40 degrees, which lasts a few seconds. There are no turns with sustained high AoA like a 180 or a 360 turn. Those turns are on par with any other aircraft. The pilot seems to just have a series of short high alpha turns of no more than 90 degrees.

Although not as pronounced, this air frame needs very high speed to maneuver properly in a narrow dogfight combat envelope, much like its distant cousin the F-5. Wing loading and power are huge factors in this I expect. It is a beast in it's envelope, no doubt, and can carry a huge load. However, in air to air I would depend on it's long distance missile tech over its dogfight maneuver capability.

Armands M Well, if you study those downed MIGs-29’s and do some honest research, you would understand that they had no chance to survive. Most common reasons are: Migs old and short range radar and lack of proper service (Serbian MiGs in 1999), lack of pilot experience and flying hours (Iraqi example), compared to American ace pilots with enough hours under their belt.
