Quite a few years ago I was on an annual camping/fishing trip with a group of friends. There were probably thirty guys there. A friend brought along his son- in-law who just happened to be USNA grad and a naval aviator stations aboard the Enterprise. He was an F-18 pilot. I could not talk to him enough about it. Lucky for me he genuinely appreciate my interest and really enjoyed talking to me about his occupation. It was obvious he was very proud of what he was doing.

@@Rooster211_ Oh, he was sharp. We were just sitting around enjoying ourselves drinking a few beers. Well, maybe a little more than a few. He talked about how the pilots took turns as LSO’s and how the pilots graded each other on their ‘traps’. And night landings, which he said were always nerve racking. It was thoroughly entertaining and informative for me. I had always been interested in that sort of thing and there I was just leisurely chatting away with an actual Navy fighter pilot about it all.

Super awesome!!! Very very dangerous "job" Not only for the pilots - imagine landing on a "small strip" at sea in the middle of "nowhere" everything moving, rocking and rolling as, the waves trash against the ship - freaking scary!! The personnel working on the flight deck making everything possible!! To be vigilant, alert, concentrating, thinking, always safety first. A freaking awesome thrill, freaking super dangerous. Imagine all the hours and hours of training to ensure things go right. In the time of conflict there is no time for error - to do what you have to, to return home safely. Do people really know and understand how special each person is, each person serving their country, being away from your loved ones for long periods of time. I pray for the safety of every individual "serving" I pray that Allmighty God our Father in heaven bless you all!! Lots and lots of love from South Africa ❤️ 🌹

All necessary. There is no showing off on the deck. Just procedure.

To be fair, an unexpected attack would likely be handled by one of the destroyers or other support ships that are in the Carrier Strike Group. The Carrier is never alone and any threats are delt with before they can even get close...

Based on the intakes, isn't this a F-18, not a F/A-18? Or am I wrong?

The /A stands for Attack. All F-18’s are multi role Fighter/Attach aircraft so they all have the F/A designation. The only change on the intakes was the introduction of the F/A-18E Super Hornet, where the intakes changed from round to rectangular. Thanks for watching!!
