Impressive analysis. The only one thumb down probably came from the judge who didn't understand this nocturne.

Absolutely wonderful! Out of many many recordings of this nocturne I find yours is the purest one, speaking to the listener's imagination. I like to think of Chopin dreaming about how it would be like to be with his beloved woman, and the realization, that it's only a dream, coming through at several points with a "sader" connotation. I prefer your recording of this on spotify over any other one and I hope you get the chance to record more in the future! Keep up the great work :)

After watching, via the internet, your recital that you gave last August, I became interested, dear Mo Niemczuk, to follow your analysis for Nocturne op 9, no. 3. I do not hide from you the fact that your interpretation was very eloquent and captivating. I think you have a unique way of approaching all of Chopin's work. This Nocturne, however, reminds me of Shakespeare's "A Midnight Summer's Dream", a mainly "scherzando" play, also. There are more than one erotic couples, and the dialogue between lovers is colored by various variations of feelings and emotions. But more, I want to emphasize the fact that a composer is generally free to imagine, feel and create. Unfortunately, a performer is often a prisoner of prejudice, obsession or even premeditated decisions of a committee that, despite the fact that it may be composed of internationally renowned artists, the purpose it serves is not always, either legitimate or fair.

Yes!! And unfortunately I was a casualty of that... But this was a lesson for me. And what's more, I didn't change after that! I decided to continue playing the music like I feel it should be played, having my own style.

@@gregniemczuk Go on your own way, Mo Niemczuk !!! You will prevail !!! The work assigned to you through this project is much more worthier and worldwide acclaimed, compared to a typical prize from a jury composed by narrow-minded and morally reprehensible "artists".

This piece really works with your non-technical analysis style as it is so complex. You found things I hadn't noticed, so really interesting! I completely agree with you Its is actually marked scherzando THREE times in the music, for the avoidance of doubt! For me when trying to play this I felt the scherzando in the music especially in the first half (bar 31 is a lot of fun to play, I think you cannot take the high C and B notes too seriously!!). Honestly, I didn't even notice the "scherzando" marking when I first started playing it, it just seemed obviously playful. Oh, and by the way, that was beautifully played by you. I wish I might be able to play that agitato section at a proper tempo one day! There is one detail I feel differently about, which is the "risoluto" scale near the end, which I don't feel should be played fast, but with a kind of off-the-beat determination. Just my feeling, though.
@gregniemczuk

Thank you so much!!! Risoluto means something like "with self-confidence"

@@gregniemczuk Ah?! The English translation is "resolved" which in English at least is like determined, decided. And that determined my idea of this bar... but as I say that is merely my humble feeling, I do not profess to have any insight into what Chopin might have wanted... Clara Schumann uses the same term in her music. I wonder where she got it from... anyway she did play a lot of Chopin's music! :))

In nocturne no.3, Scherzando in musical terms,means ' playful' rather than joking which is the more literal meaning .I think playful is a more fitting description for this nocturne,though perhaps with a gentle flowing approach.. This is my gut feeling .In the more dramatic questioning section -this could be an argument and teasing which provokes some unrest then making up , between the lovers before finally making up before they depart

Greg, my interpretation is somewhat different. Often in relationships, there are moments where one partner cavalierly treats an emotion in a way that is deeply important to the other partner and it causes great emotional pain. That is what I believe is happening in part A, causing the explosion of anger, not cruelty, in part B. The voice you characterize as "begging for mercy" is, I believe, the one speaking "jokingly" in part A and is now offering a heartfelt apology to try and mitigate the pain they have caused. The reconciliation at the end after the recapitulation of part A shows that the offended partner has accepted that the hurtful "joking" was done out of love rather than insensitivity or disregard for their feelings.

Did he ask her to move to Paris with him when they were at a dance, and this nocturne is that whole night set to music? Melody 1: Waltzing and laughing after a few drinks. Melody 2: "I'm leaving for Paris". "Ha ha ha ha ha, what's that Fred? Oh, hang on, I love this song!" Some time later, Melody 3: "We need to talk...", then he repeats his news (Melody 2), and then "Ha ha ha ha ha...oh Fred, you're serious!" (B section begins). "Please come with me!" "Sorry, Fred, I really can't!" He begs repeatedly but finally relents. "Well, that sucks, but let's enjoy the rest of the night." "Ha ha ha ha ha... okay!" Repeat A Section, the rest of the night went very well, and then they said goodbye... Maybe, who knows! Thank you Greg for all these ideas, and for playing this nocturne the way Fred intended!
