I have listened to many performances on KZbin of this nocturne. Artur Rubinstein's performance is similar in mood to this one. But so many even great pianists miss capturing the right spirit. Some play it quickly, the chromatic notes emphasized, there is a metallic and punched sound to the notes, the ornamental runs sound like a circus performance. Anna Fedorova gets so many things right. Perhaps the piano and recording help as well. Her melodic tone is deep and pleasant as though singing. She gives some weight and length to the short sixteenth notes - others play them flippantly. She can lighten her touch also, so that passages have a velvety sheen, and have a swooning quality. If she is listening, it would be great if she would record more Chopin Nocturnes.

I have been listening to the Preliminaries of the Chopin 2021 competition, and have heard and seen several pianists play this same nocturne, and I return to this performance. I recall being impressed with this performance when it was first played live. The pianist maintains composure and poise in the face. The back is straight, the fingers are curved, and there is a lack of physical tension in the playing. The melody is played with a singing legato tone, without hurry or rush. There is points of lingering in the phrasing, as well as moving toward the climactic peaks. The contrasting middle section is dramatic and yet played with restraint and control. The sound quality is excellent, and there are several camera angles. All the elements contribute to a moment of calm contemplation of a pleasure, and a relaxed state of being. A fine performance.

Okay…..this is best interpretation I’ve heard, including Ashkenazy. Why? The mid section played with the appropriate fury and menace, but NOT overly heavy handed or loud. She swept through that series of legato passages keeping the emotional flow so that one does not get anxious or agitated. I listen to Chopin while painting. When I get to Chopin’s Nocturne in B minor i find myself ripping my headphones off from angst, at the middle change that becomes disturbing. She confirms what I suspected, that you can play this true to Chopin’s shifting moods without being confrontational. That she can play this potentially bellicose passage without aggressive anger and still convey the menacing mood. ❤ This replaces Rubenstein, Ashkenazy and Harasiewicz on my morning playlist for this Nocturne.
