F.I.T. Single Axle Mack MR / Pak-Mor FEL Garbage Truck 449 (in action) 9-07-09

SAY HELLO TO VIDEO 200! Since this is a special mark, I wanted to make the video special too!
This is a 1992 single axle Mack MR 5spd manual transmission with a 20 yard Pak-Mor full eject front load body that serves the Florida Institute of Technology -- as the campus's ONLY garbage truck.
This Pak-Mor body was originally meant for use with a Volvo chassis. When F.I.T. bought the body they purchased a 1992 Mack MR chassis that was custom fitted in Mexico to the Pak-Mor body.
The tailgate is NOT original to the truck and had to be custom fitted to the body to replace the original one that failed.
The driver of the truck told me that parts for this truck are VERY HARD to find and when they do get replacement parts, many times extra work is required to make the parts work properly. Sometimes parts they are able to get are SO old that they need to be repaired and/or modified prior to use.

This truck is still in service with NO replacement in sight and was seen on Sept. 7, 2009.

That Mack Single Axle front loader garbage truck is super rare there's not many of those around only Tandem axle Mack Garbage trucks this one should be in a Museum of rare Garbage trucks

I remember seeing a single axle Pak-Mor FL owned by a community college back in LINY! But the chassis was an old IHC Cargostar & the body didn't have those custom features! I also remember those MRs with manual gearboxes too! Great Catch, 5/5!!

Well, This was in the early 80s, I was a young kid! I'm pretty sure that truck might've been replaced by some Autocar, CCC or most likely an MRU!! esp since Macks dominate LINY in Waste!! I sure would like to visit there 1 day to find out!!! Btw, You're Welcome for Stars & Great Work as Always!!!

This is definitely a unique truck... the driver said that it's hard to find parts for it too. I'm just glad that I was able to get it on film... not many of these left in operation.

This truck is currently in operation at the Florida Institute of Technology as the campus' only garbage truck, this truck is located in central Florida.

This truck is approx 150 miles south of that... in Melbourne, FL. It's possible that it's an old municipal truck... I didn't ask him where they got it from. Do you remember the chassis of the trucks that St. Augustine ran? The driver said the body was originally meant for a Volvo.

Actually, Roadchubbs saw it at the transfer one day and asked the guy where he collects. This is one of those trucks that would have taken me a MIRACLE to find... I've lived in this area for 2 years and I'd NEVER seen it - it was so close, but it never leaves that college unless it's dumping... and that's only once a day during the work week - usually around mid to late morning it makes the run to the transfer and then it returns to the college and gets parked.

The chance of me stumbling across it would be VERY low. I would have had to cross paths with it during the 1 time a day that it leaves the campus. From what I understand that's once in the late morning. IF I would have ever stumbled across it, that would have been a pure luck find... then I probably would have lost my mind trying to figure out where it came from. Many of the roads between the transfer and that campus are congested with cars, so I probably would have lost it in traffic.

Yeah they keep it going! If you look close there's places where the truck is beat up from years of use, but they keep the paint looking good. Looks better than trucks I drove that were less than half the age. I'm guessing they'll stop using this truck when they can't find the parts for it. Thanks for the stars and fav!

I'm not sure how they came up with that number... if I had to guess -- it's probably just one of the numbers they assign for all vehicles at the campus (golf carts included).

Spectacular find Alan! Out of curiosity, how did you discover this truck? So is the chassis and body a 1992 or just the MR? Very cool truck, just an awesome design and combo. Like the arm/top door linkage -- I remember the old yellow Dumpex FL that used to do the paper at my old school, had the same linkage system, just connected from different points. I think this truck runs daily during the week, so I don't think many of the dumpsters are full. He quickly dumps them... and then he dumps out (I think he said he can get his route in one load, unless it's at the beginning/end of the semester). When I talked to him... he was picking up the last 4 dumpsters mid-morning. I only got to film the last 3 because a delivery truck had them blocked earlier that morning.

Is this really only a 1992? because I've worked on a lot of trucks that are even older than a 92, and they don't look like that much of a dinosaur lol. Before I read the description I thought that truck was a lot older than that.

2023 update: Looking through Maps images, this truck appears to have been gone for a few years now; exactly how long for, I’m not sure. The university is now served by Waste Management. RIP single-axle Mack MR/Pak-Mor (1992 - ???). It will be missed.
