Wonderful performance. Many congratulations to the Maestro, leader & musicians for this magnificent performance. A musical side note. This symphony gets its name due to its ingenious second movement, Andante. But, back in the Esterhazy palaces and houses where clocks chimed every hour, and half hour. The music for these chimes was composed by one FJ Haydn. Hence one of the reasons why Papa Haydn was never forgotten after he passed. Which, of course, led to that other event of Haydn's missing head. Once again, fantastic performance of this symphony.

Outstanding Iversion of a marvelous symphony. I have never heard the timpani and brass parts so clearly and they contribute much to the effectiveness of the work and its performance. You can see that the conductor is completely involved in the score and the orchestra responds fully. Breath-taking!

Desde la muerte del "Bach de Londres", Johann Christian Bach, en 1782, la música de Franz Joseph Haydn en esa ciudad había ido progresivamente en ascenso hasta llegar a un punto en que "difícilmente se producía un concierto que no contara con alguna pieza de su autoría", según señala un historiador de la época. En consonancia con ello, numerosos habían sido los esfuerzos por lograr la visita del ilustre compositor, los que siempre toparon con la negativa de Haydn, debido a que el maestro no quería por nada del mundo incomodar a su patrón Nikolaus Esterhazy, a quien sirvió por más de treinta años, en calidad de kapellmeister, aunque fuera en la corte de un remoto palacio aislado en la campiña húngara. Pero con la muerte de Nikolaus, en 1790, las responsabilidades del maestro se vieron aliviadas. Sucedió a Nikolaus su hijo Anton, un príncipe poco dado a las artes que se desprendió de la mayoría de los músicos, si bien conservó a Haydn en su cargo, aumentándole incluso la pensión, y sin pedir nada especial a cambio. Ante el nuevo escenario, Haydn aprovechó de largarse a Viena en cuanto pudo. Al poco tiempo, se apersonó en su casa el violinista nacido en Bonn, Johann Peter Solomon, quien estaba haciendo carrera en Londres como organizador de conciertos y bramaba por el concurso de Haydn. El maestro no pudo negarse: las condiciones eran magníficas. Así, a los 58 años, Haydn abandonó por primera vez su país natal: el primero de enero de 1791 cruzaba el canal y veía el océano por vez primera... Salomon (recte). Handel was also particularly important in England throughout the eighteenth century. JC Bach was known as the ‘English Bach’ - as described in Mozart’s letter to his father noting JC’s death in 1782.

Keith Harris You are actually mistaken in thinking that it wasn’t composed for the likes of you; Haydn’s London audiences were very different from those he knew at the Eszterhaza court or in Vienna. In England, whilst he went to meet the King and Queen at Windsor and met the Prince Regent many times, in fact royalty, the aristocracy, and the Church - in contrast to much of Europe - were almost irrelevant. Haydn spent most of his time writing music for the much more important middle classes and ‘ordinary’ people buying tickets to his concerts - in fact, a big contrast with Beethoven back in Vienna who had to spend a lot of his time trying to secure aristocratic patronage and support. In short; Haydn’s music was for everyone.

In the "second" introduction 1:45-2:05, the missing vibrato in even the leading-on harmonies creates a hunger in the ear, suspense. Very effective!

Maxwell Kaye Be careful with the modern mis-usage of the word ‘inspired’; Beethoven noted, studied, and thought carefully about much of the music of his two great predecessors, and then did his own thing…but can that really be described as ‘…inspired by’ ? I think not. Regarding your excellent substantive point: Beethoven noted (better than inspired) not just Haydn’s later works; he copied out the whole of the string quartet Opus 20 No 1 for example which Haydn had written over twenty years earlier in 1772.

Spot on!... Even more so when listening to Haydn's 90th symphony, for example. Beethoven once said in a fit of rage "I never learnt anything from Haydn!".... lol... but he also showed great respect towards Haydn at other times in his life... good old tempremental Ludwig. I think Mozart was of less influence to Beethoven though.. as far as style is concerned.

@@clavichord Some good points, Beethoven copied out part of the later Symphony 99 as well. Just be careful about repeating the ‘...never learnt anything from Haydn’ out of context. Beethoven was not talking about Haydn per se, he was complaining about having to complete hundreds of dry counterpoint exercises taken from Fux’s manual on counterpoint, Gradus ad Parnassum. Haydn was too busy to correct most of these, and this has always been held against him in much of the literature. To be fair to Haydn, he certainly discussed Beethoven’s errors with him, but from the extant work, it is clear that the formal marking was lax. Albrechtsberger - who took over and continued the lessons on Haydn’s recommendation after he left for his second London trip - also dosed Beethoven with Fux. Two interesting speculations: (i) Outside poring over Fux, what *did* in fact Haydn and Beethoven actually discuss ? (All the biographies of both composers are thin in this). (ii) Why had Beethoven’s counterpoint studies been apparently so neglected in Bonn ? (Beethoven was almost 22 years old when he arrived in Vienna in November 1792 to commence the counterpoint lessons with Haydn, and when Haydn set off to England for his second visit in January 1794, the counterpoint lessons were continued - on Haydn’s recommendation - by Albrechtsberger).
