I am really starting to adore Haydn. There's a wonderful playful, joyous, innocent, and child-like quality to his music. It's undeniably infectious and adept at putting a smile on my face. It's said Haydn had a good sense of humour, and I sense that whenever I listen to his music. It's so lighthearted and mischievous at times.

This is because most of us are heavily influenced in our musical outlook by the 19th century Romantics. It is fairer to Haydn to view and compare his music, style and influence with his contemporaries, those that came before him and Beethoven/Schubert who came very directly after him. For many during his time, they were actually startled by the seriousness, deeply personal and introspective moments especially in Haydn's slow symphonic movements... something which isn't always apparent to the modern classical ear today. The young Beethoven owes and is indepted greatly to Haydn's influence, symphonic and chamber music inovations... and despite Beethoven's stormy character, it is fair to say that of all composers Beethoven had the deepest reverence and respect for Haydn, FATHER of the mature classical symphony and string quartet genre.

That’s a great start - but you will discover far deeper layers of meaning, originality, intellectuality, emotion, and power as you continue your listening journey. Like for Beethoven, whilst Mozart will provide answers, Haydn will pose questions.

This is very much to my taste, the small orchestra brings out the inner detail which gets lost in larger forces, also the string players avoid the dreaded vibrato which spoils performances of this period. Koopman is a true Maestro of the Baroque and Early Classical music.
