The average length of career for most NFL players is 2 - 3 years and only the players with guaranteed money in their contracts see millions. I agree that no matter what their income is they should invest wisely, spend frugally and closely monitor their own health with their own physicians. Sadly, many have been playing football for years before they even make it to the NFL and the long-term impact to their health may be unavoidable.

The real problem is that football is dangerous for long term health. That’s it. The NFL knows this. So paying players isn’t their highest concern. American football as we know it will eventually come to an end, or be changed so drastically that it’ll virtually cease to be anything resembling today’s game. The players are tone deaf. They make millions of dollars that if invested properly can be the building block for generational wealth. Their children, their children’s children are better suited to be finically competent. There are people working minimum wage jobs while going to school full time to get out of a hole. There are people happily working for $30 an hour sitting under lights all day that slowly give them cancer. Getting paid millions to smash your head into another grown man for a couple of years isn’t too bad of a gig. On top of all of that, you chose to go into that field of work…

The players need something better than Aflac. If the Players Union wasn't bought and owned by the NFL they could have put something together for players. Players should also get a percentage of ticket sales, parking, concessions, apparel, etc... NASCAR does something like this for its drivers. The NFL could easily put a compensation package for them which would allow them to have something after these short careers are over.

The physical and mental toll the game takes on players should qualify them for a lifetime of health insurance covered at the NFLs expense once they retire. Everyone shouldn't qualify but if a player plays a minimum of 5 years (or 80 games) should allow for partial or split coverage; 8 years or more, full coverage; career ending injury while below 8 years should be full coverage for any issues related to that injury. I would get deep into the finances but I would basically like to see players with 8 years or more tenure get a scaling stipend (.0025-.005% of NFL profits; which would be taxable) after the age of 45 for 20 years. That would allow them to pay into SS and allow for stability if they have had hardships or mishaps due to mental health. Most research about the sport and it's consequences are newer to the public (less than a decade) so they most likely weren't as informed as you would hope. I understand you think it's ridiculous but it's just pennies to a billion dollar business in a trillion dollar industry. Take into consideration that most businesses take care of their retired employees. I'm not saying they need to make millions but something to aid with their lives is completely humane and achievable.

I am an average standard sized person. Once I stood next to Eric when he ran in a celebrity track race in Dallas in the mid 80's. Eric is as tall as a smoke stack on a locomotive but he could MOVE. I am so glad to see him doing well. He, starting with Jim Brown and afterwards Barry Sanders, walked away from football when their stats would be untouchable today but what would be the point?

Poor babies! It took me 31 years of carrying mail for the U.S. Post Office ( 1.2 million) to make what these guys made in 6 games. I've had 2 major back surgeries and am about to have my 2nd shoulder surgery. By the way, they treated me like crap everyday especially the closer I got to retirement (age 62). Not to mention I had to pay for my college degree.

I love Pro Football, but in all honesty, the guys playing Pro Football knew what they were getting into long before they signed their Multi Million Dollar Contracts. I have no sympathy for Pro Athletes who complain about Post Career Injuries and Money. Getting paid MILLIONS to play a game you signed up for doesn't sound forced to me..... most knew of the Medical dangers beforehand, and how it would potentially affect their physical well being, so it HAD to be about the money at some point. Funny thing is, most Professional Athletes would say they would do it all over again, regardless of their physical state after their careers are overwith.

When I watch gladiator movies, I.E. Spartacus & Gladiator. It reminds me of Cesar & NFL owners. They’ve “paid” or were given a product, the stands are always full with fans wanting to see one or the other side bruised, beaten, or dead as the fans cheer. All the while Caesar or the owner of the property sits in his box hoping his gladiator beats the other. If the gladiator is maimed or killed, they feel sorry for the lost of investment. Hell, I sat down with a group of white guys in the lockeroom one day and we all talked about how much we'd grown to hate the game and this was my junior year in college. It's not just the NFL. There comes a point to where you passion starts to wane. Guys who make the Hall of Fame are the ones who just have the game all in their systems and, I guess, will do anything. But a lot of players really start to dislike it after a while.
