Set Me Free (超度我) was the winning song at DoMeSo Music Competition 2019, composed and performed by FulushouFloruitShow (福禄寿FloruitShow). This fairly recent band is a fusion music indie group formed in Beijing in 2018 by three sisters and gained further popularity when they launched their first nationwide tour at the end of 2020. This song is part of the band’s first album, “What Can I Hold You With” (我用什么把你留住), which was released in January 2021 this year.
It was a bit difficult to put together English translations, since as of today (May 19, 2021), there are very limited translations out there, and the few that exist have differing meanings. Additionally, the song is quite metaphorical, with heavy Buddhist allusion, so direct translations probably lose nuance, but I tried my best by using online dictionaries and other sources. My interpretation of this song is really just about the difficulty of moving on from someone who left you, even when it's better to forget and move on. The lyrics reference Buddhist concepts as a big brain artsy metaphor for how worldly desires keep people constrained (such as missing old relationships) and prevent them from seeing what really matters at the end of the day
