FMA's performance was deep and emotional. He lived, ate and breathed Salieri. He felt his thoughts and his loathings. He felt his absolute envy of Mozart's abilities while at the same admiring this man who clearly had God given talent in the work he produced. All of that, all those emotions, all mixed together and projected without whispering a single word. That is one of the most difficult performances to pull off authentically.

I agree. The dialogue between Salieri and the priest is awsome, very emotional. Like when the priest start to sing along and say. - Yes i know that! Thats charmning! I'm sorry i didnt know you wrote that! - ...I didn't. I also like when Salieri try to describe Mozarts music - On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse - bassoons and basset horns - like a rusty squeezebox. Then suddenly - high above it - an oboe, a single note, hanging there unwavering, till a clarinet took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight! This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I'd never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling. It seemed to me that I was hearing a voice of God.

Mozart was a less complex character (in the movie) and had the real Mozart's music buoying him up. BTW, the movie led to a revival of interest in Salieri, who IRL was friends with both Mozart and Beethoven, I think Beethoven's teacher at one point, and a pallbearer at his funeral. They were all part of the elite of their time and respected each other. Salieri was conservative, and his music went out of fashion as the new generation of romantics arrived.

senorkaboom He chose to be an actor, not a star. He's been a working actor ever since he won. Something 90% of all actors in SAG can't say.

What a class act. Well done Mr. Abraham! To his credit, Hulce was clearly very happy for Abraham. It was really great of Abraham to acknowledge Hulce, as well. They both knew the strength of their performances depended on the other.

Abraham as Salieri was absolutely FANTASTIC!!! but Tom Hulce did such an amazing job too they complimented each other so well in Amadeus it's such a shame that he couldn't stand up there with him.

Is it me, or did actors accept awards with a bit more grace and humility back then.....
@dorarouzi5 жыл бұрын
Exactly!Not only more humility but the Oscars back then were all about talent. I don't think they had the disgusting political propaganda and catwalk with the dresses or the bad jokes that even the actors who are present in the ceremony can't even laugh with!

They could actually speak back then and express themselves with eloquence. And none of this nonsense of thanking everyone and their dog 🙄

F Murray Abraham's such a great, classily humble, admirable, handsome actor and man. He truly deserved winning this oscar for his fabulous performance as Salieri in the movie "Amadeus".

If ever a film deserved two Best Actor Oscars, it was this one. Abraham was a worthy winner, but he had the perfect complement with Tom Hulce.

Just the way he so elegantly pranced up the steps, to the measured pause when he met Shirley, respectfully greeting her and accepting the award….and then the way his hand so smoothly slides under the the bottom of the statue. Captivating.

Because the directors cut is clear and above the best dramatic movie of all time, while the theatrical release was disjointed enough to make it seem subpar. If you've seen the directors cut you'd know just how unmatched this performance was.

No actor ever deserved it more. It was perhaps the best performance I've ever seen, and I've seen some great performances. Actors are, at times, insecure, prickly and vain. I suppose they suffer from the same ills that afflict us all. But, they also possess this wonderful ability to hold us in their magic spell.

I'm 19 and I'm studying acting. The synergy between these two actors and the level of commitment to their characters created an immortal film. In passing, I commented that neither of them used a fashionable technique at the time called "the method" that involves putting mental health at stake. They prove that classic acting techniques give great results.
