He shud have been honest and open with her (his Wife)... thats all it takes actually. After all, shes not just a girlfriend. Being an "immortal" simply means that they will not die of old age. Other causes, like wounds, poisons, damaged spirit etc, will still hurt them, and, if they're strong enough, kill the immortal.
