Thank you for this excellent summary of the research regarding F&P BAS and LLI and how inaccurate the levelling system is. Grouping by skills would be much more efficient for small group teaching.

Does this criticism also apply to Ehri's phases of word-reading? It seems to me that this is overused, and that a focus on identifying specific skill deficits would be more helpful.

Thanks, the approach of measuring the skills and then having a more individualized approach is what most in my jurisdiction do, but they've been criticised by SoR proponents as being a Balanced Lit approach. Also, the Effect Sizes you display at the end are HUGE and i'm sure you know but comparing effect sizes from different study designs can be very misleading (see Simpson, Adrian (2018). Princesses are bigger than elephants: Effect size as a category error in evidence-based education. British Educational Research Journal). Have you more detail on how you calculated those effect Sizes?

@leo_2266 yes u are right, thats the hard part. We try to do what the Prof says- diagnostic testing for skill, teacher observation, grouping classes with specialist, small groups. DOE promotes Individualised Learning Programs.
