If you ever get the chance to play something fretless like a violin/cello or a fretless guitar/bass, find a root note you know and it's a trip how easily your muscle memory remembers the spacing and scales with the option of sliding through microtones if you want. Extremely tasty and impressive, I love it. I'm not super knowledgeable as far as jazz goes, but watching you guys is truly inspirational. The transitions between sections were silky smooth and the solo reminded me a lot of coltranes style, which is just so cool. I'm very curious about your inspirations and what kinds of concepts and tools, like theory wise, you guys utilized in this song and within the solo to make it sound so jumpy and complicated?!

@Aaron-zh4kj2 жыл бұрын
As a mostly rock musician who’s curious about a lot of this stuff too, it’s always a good reminder for us: If it sounds good, it’s good. That’s the highest value. I’m not belittling your question at all (I’m asking it too); it’s just good to throw that in the conversation now and again. A lot of the jazz greats we look up to couldn’t afford to get a music education and couldn’t always explain what they were doing but it was amazing and a lot of educated people struggle to describe what they were doing theory wise, which is quite remarkable. I think it’s maybe like the difference between driving a car and building one. Two very different types and levels of knowledge. Anyway, jazz is truly its own language, one that I really enjoyed dabbling in and learning more of since way back when I got the gig as guitarist in a swing orchestra.
@nocked5452 жыл бұрын
@@Aaron-zh4kj I love that analogy. I'm also a rock/metal bassist and guitarist and I'm self taught. I agree with the perspective that is more of a muscle memory/feel thing and that can be difficult to break down without some effort. Still I will always look to expand my tool set and knowledge. These comments have brought me incite and joy and i am enjoying the musical philosophy. My best guess as far as what he'd doing is very specific key changes within the solo that play on the root key of the jam blended with bouncy phrasing which is a much more personal touch, but that really narrows it down so little. It's a bit difficult to wrap my head around. I guess my goal is to find bread crumbs to lead me to a better understanding so I can diversify my own playing.
@Aaron-zh4kj2 жыл бұрын
@@nocked545 Definitely, same. I love hearing jazz heads break down what's happening in songs, even if sometime's I'm barely hanging onto the explanation. I make little movements toward getting a handle on it. I think with theory, as someone who has just some music education and has what I'd call a basic, solid foundation with theory (not into all the crazy theories of harmony or anything at this point. lol), there is a certain level the gives you the tools to understand the building blocks of a song and what makes it work. But what makes Jazz different is a certain level of ambiguity gets tolerated with just enough structure to hold the ship afloat, and it's a super interesting result. My jazz guitar guru teacher for a few semesters once asked me during a lesson: "what notes are in a C chord?" I responded with listing off the root, third, and fifth (the three required notes in a major chord); he then corrected me with "no. ALL of them are." That's jazz in a nutshell. The key underneath the notes goes from being a foundation for a song like in other music to being like a ship floating on water that can simply carry everything inside, move, and doesn't stay stationary. Then, in terms of harmony and notes working over chords, it's a question of just what produces a pleasing resulting sound. There is a rhyme and rhythm to what makes something pleasing, ranging from more euphonic to dissonant (for example, does a line of notes outline a chord and does that chord in the context coming after the one before serve a certain role and mimic the relationship of two chords in a given key, even if just for a moment before changing the whole base with a far field chord that makes you assume a different key all over again). At that point though, you're just describing, and that's all music theory is good for at that level. You can use theory as a writing tool, but it by itself isn't writing music, just describing. In jazz, at a certain point, everything is relative. But knowing the conventions of the style (something I've still yet to do in a big way) gives you the ability to speak the language more fluently. Thankfully, what I can tell you is this particular piece they're playing doesn't get too chaotic in that rabbit whole, it stays pretty stable and stationary for the most part in terms of key. What a jazz head could tell us more about the song is toward the end what some of their harmonies are implying in terms of chords and where they're going. Don't know if that's stuff you already know or if it's helpful, but I love talking about this stuff, so if you stuck it out to the end, thanks so much. lol.
