F the F Chord

I've got a lot of students getting pretty frustrated with this bully of a chord shape.
Remember a few things:
1) We can identify the notes in the chord. They are F (Root note), A (Major 3rd) and C (the fifth).
2) It's a shape. This shape moves up the neck and is the foundation for endless wonderful phrases, riffs and songs. You can play all 12 keys with this shape. It is a powerful component of guitar. Once you get it, it will be really useful!
Approach it mechanically. Take it apart and see what the notes are and what they sound like individually. Learn the notes in the chord and practice them. Eventually your hands will learn that shape and so will your ears. It will be easy! But today we must do battle with this monster. Chip away at it every day and we will tame it and put it to work.

Its always good to have a well set up instrument too. Its sad that many have given up learning because their action is too high and/or they cant afford a set up on their instrument. Luckily learning to adjust the action can be done using KZbin videos, but alas, not all want learn to do that and thats another group that might give up trying. Its sad. But if they can find a way to get those barre chords down its such a huge step for the beginner.

Agree! That is crucial. I do some set ups but send a lot of my guitars to an expert and the difference is astonishing to me.

When you played the open position Fmaj7, the first thing that popped into my head was the next chord is an Am to a Bb to an Ebmaj7 and so on... Colour My World by Chicago.

A song from David Bowie has a killer bar chord progression with the F maj and C to Cmaj 7 I wish I could remember the name of the song but it will get alot of people up to parr on bar chords,

Why would you play all six notes in a barre-chord? Get a bassist, keyboardist, or a second, or third, guitarist to play the root-note!! Or just ignore the root-note!!
