The accident did Hans Hermann little harm. He went on to win the 1970 Le Mans 24 hour race and as of July 2014 he is still aliveand is 86 years old.

+Frank Wareing Indeed an iconic man in the sport. After his 1970 LeMans win in the mighty 917K, Porsches first overall victory there, Hermann immediately retired from racing. He later said he had promised his wife he would if he won Le Mans. I've always wondered if Hermann was, in some way, an inspiration for the Johann Ritter character in Steve McQueen's movie 'Le Mans"? The Ritter character plot line has some parallels to Hermann. Although Hermann never was yanked from the winning car, quite the opposite!

About the description: In the 50's the South Corner was not a hairpin but a loop too. The hairpin is from the 80's and 90's. The banked North Corner was introduced in 1937. A banked version of the South Corner was also in preparation but never completed, because of the outbroke of the war. In 1967 they demolished the banking because it was found too dangerous.

Not only broken neck. I even think broken spine. You can see clearly how at 0:08 and at 0:10 the car is touching the ground completely but upside-down.

It's pretty crazy yeah, but how about Jackie Stewart at 1966 Spa? Flew off the course at the Masta Kink (ie he went at least 140mph at the time), across a fence, into a farmstead house(some say into the cellar of a house), trapped under his own car bc of the steering wheel, with gas pouring down over him. He managed to get out with the help of some people and lived to tell about it. One spark or a hot exhaust pipe or one clip of a stone (wall) etc and he had been history.

Some drivers didn't use belts in those days. They were more afraid of fire and being trapped, than they were afraid of being flung from the car.

Earlier, in a support race, Jean Behra lost control of his Porsche on the banking. His car struck the top of the banking, he was thrown from the car and he slammed into a flagpole with such force he knocked it down. The duality of safety back then. Whilst it was certainly safer to be thrown from a flipping car back then, it was all about where you landed and how you landed. Jean got the bad luck, whilst Hans got the good luck.

Et dire que cet accident n'est pas le pire de ce Grand Prix... En effet, durant la course, le pilote français Jean Behra se tue après avoir percuté à pleine vitesse une dalle de béton suite à une sortie de piste.
