Looks like due to the engine and/or downforce config the car picked up about 6 kph on the straights. Pretty good efficiency increase if you look at how on the edge the 2015 car already was. But with softer tyres going only 0.4 seconds faster, yeah, meh.. But the Mercs in the V6 were always good at heating up harder tyres, gaining less from softer compounds.

Im sure Nico was using a lower downforce setup in 2016 than Lewis did in 2015, despite having the softer tyres, which was a reason why he was slower in some corners. But tyre degradation was probably higher in 2016 as well. But Nico probably could've hit at least a low 1:46 or a high 1:45 since 2016 cars where a whole few seconds faster than 2015.

I feel like, from what I’ve seen, that Nico has a better feeling when he’s going back on the power out of a corner whereas Lewis is better when braking during the turn-in. But yeah it might be that they have different setups and shit like that but that’s what I gathered from this brief comparison

Lewis beat Rosberg by almost 0.5s at 2015 Spa and given how much he smashed him in quali at monza 2016 (the next race) its probably safe to say he would’ve gone quicker had he taken part in quali properly. Maybe the difference would be about 0.7-0.8 which is pretty normal year on year gains.

tyre pressures i think. Pirelli set the minimum tyre pressures really high so there was smaller contact patch, this mean't that the tyres were being worked harder and they were overheating and blistering even on one lap. mercedes didn't get the most out of the supersoft anyway for some reason

The issue with the higher pressure is not contact patch, it's sidewall stiffness. The tires are sliding more because there is less sidewall deformation which allows a greater amount of slip angle before a loss of traction.
