Car balance, oversteer, understeer, operating windows… 👀 what exactly do these terms mean and how do teams decide and change car set-ups, both on and off the track? 🤔 Vehicle Dynamics, explained by Andrew Shovlin - Trackside Engineering Director - featuring his whiteboard! 😄

I'm no engineer, but I _do_ get how much brainpower goes into designing, constructing, and maintaining such a beast as an F1 car. And that appreciation doesn't stop at F1 for me; Far more often than not, I consider what it took to make a thing that SEEMS simple (but isn't), as well as the obviously-complex. Respect to all those that do it.

@@MercedesAMGF1 how would one optimize spring rates and damping to make the cars pillowy-soft over bumps, but also maintain high mechanical grip, and also dampen out movements quickly to maintain consistent loading of the tires' contact patch (but gradual enough like someone catching a baseball with a glove to stop it from hurting their hand)? Also how would tire pressures, camber and toe be optimized for the highest possible mechanical grip theoretically on offer by the tires?

@@MercedesAMGF1 how do dampers switch the damping intensity/viscosity of fluid medium for fast vs slow bump, rebound. Is it possible to have a suspension that will be gentle on the drivers' bottoms (and allow for easier vision without porpoising shakiness) and still maintain stable aero platform (kinda like how the drivers would like the 2022 cars to be)? Does the team also work in tandem with the Formula E team to draw insights on problems such as this?

Glad to see an explanation of load transfer and tyre load sensitivity. That is probably the least understood concept I find when reading forums and general opinions.
@racingsimtools9672
@racingsimtools9672 4 жыл бұрын
When Andrew was talking about having a stiff front and soft rear, and overloading the front due to tire sensitivity, this actually can disguise itself as snap oversteer as well, where the car initially pushes because the front is overloaded, but then once the car scrubs enough speed and the front hooks back up, the car can go into an oversteer condition. A lot of people struggle with that concept because they associate oversteer meaning the lateral stiffness is to far rearward. Pretty awesome stuff, keep these kind of videos coming!

So the sudden grip of the front end upsets the rear tyre loading and brakes traction. Yes I’ve wondered that But it’s hard to convince people that’s what’s happening

And Mercedes-AMG is the best team, by far, at providing the opportunity by offering things like this to interested fans. If I could start over and ‘do it all again’ this is where I’d aim myself.
