Formula one was more interesting when drivers were the main reason for the victory. As time went on the car became more capable of driving its self. When formula one was mostly comprised of manual transmission shifting there was more skill needed to win a race. Once a driver could gear change with their fingers and no clutch to control the skill level was reduced. I think its the driver skill that makes f1 exciting not the car going faster from more automation or power. I think for that reason Ayrton Senna Alain Prost and others from the years where f1 was still a manual shift are better drivers than drivers that came after that era. I doubt Hamilton and Schumacher would have been able to win more contests than Prost or Senna if they were all driving manual transmissions.
