Second watch observations: Also the inro for Playstation is red because I believe the song from Garbage plays during. 1. You accelerate faster on the N64 version. 2. 3:17 The side mirrors on the Ps1 version shows real time reflections! 3. The tracks are similar but have differences. The PS1 version has a blimp in the sky. Also 4:38 there is a giant screen. Hard to tell if its a still image or moving but its there. 4. PS1 at 60fps? Very smooth 5. The visual effects are quite stunning on the PS1. Lens flare and lighting effects on the car body. Smoke from braking. Suspension that looks to articulate at every bump.

The problem with cartridges is that developers try to use the smallest cartridges possible, to save money and make more money. This game could have used a 64MB cartridge but uses a 16MB one.

@veg411
@veg411 Ай бұрын
It didn't need a larger cartridge. The issue is that developers were largely using RGB textures at the time, and the N64's 4k of TMEM severely limited the resolution of how large a texture could be. This could have been fixed by more liberal use of color-indexed (16 or 255 color palette) or even intensity (grayscale) textures that could have massively improved the visual fidelity with clever artist utilisation.
@davidaitken8503

How is this game limited by the cartridge size used? Honestly, I think some clueless people just state the same dumb talking points over and over again regardless of if it pertains to the particular game or not. You try use brain better now. Use gooder of bad brain.
@Spolupyo
@Spolupyo Ай бұрын
It's not a problem with the cartridge format, is the N64 hardware, its VDP had a very limited amount of WRAM (unified) for the framebuffer so developers had to use compressed/low resolution textures that looked horrible once the texture mapping is applied, add to that the low resolution of the N64... the end result is a blurry mess.

Uh no and please STOP using "MegaByte" ROM size or even this thinking that 64 MB was easy to just slap on a game... it doesn't work that way. The proper way to describe ROM sizes in the 90s and even by 2000 for the last N64 ROM Cartridges is Megabit sizes. Therefore a 16 MB ROM size is 128 Megabit Always note that Super Mario 64 was a 4 MB ROM size or 64 Megabit ROM size That makes the comparison much more meaningful for those of us who actually purchased N64 games back then when they were new and especially in comparison to CD-ROM CD-ROM storage is 650 MB but due to the fact that it's a CD-ROM, it means read times depend on the optical disc drive mechanism... back when Sony PlayStation 1 launched only 2X Speed CD-ROM drives existed as reasonably affordable... had Sony or Sega slapped a 4X CD-ROM drive to launch in 1994 it would have added at minimum a $200 dollar plus price hike and would have made loading times shorter or faster but the fact is CD-ROM drive speed and RAM were the most expensive components that could be added to videogame systems back then. The Nintendo 64 stock system specs and the 128 Megabit ROM size was decent and reasonable for that particular developer the problem however is that PlayStation launched in December 1994 Japan, Nintendo 64 launched in April 1996 so third party devs had to really make the decision back then as programmers to learn how to properly use the N64 document tools and how to properly use the limited ROM Cartridge size... it wasn't a deal breaker at all especially when you remember that elite Nintendo developed games used small ROM sizes and when those ROM sizes got bigger the games became bigger as well.

PS1 works better because the pixelation of the grass textures is more convincing to the human eye how grass is than one blank flat homogenous green texture that may as well be painted concrete on N64. PS1 version appears to perform better with N64 struggling with decent transparency effects. Overall PS1 is more vibrant and sharper thanks to the typical N64 blur filter effect. It must be pointed out that by 2000 PS1 was very old hardware indeed with PS2 having launched months before this game arrived. It does show just how well developers had mastered Sony's machine at this point. The difference in this title graphically and the early F1 games is enormous. Huge.

I don't know how much is the work of the textures or if its' gouraud shading but the grass in the N64 version definitely looks more convincing. I would also add that N64 games like Zelda OoT and Banjo Kazooie, just to name a few, always had more convincing looking fields of grass in that era of games than anything I ever saw on Playstation.

@davidaitken8503 No, grass does not look like painted concrete like in the clearly inferior N64 version of this game. @davidaitken8503
@davidaitken8503 29 күн бұрын
@@pgr3290 The N64 didn't sell as well because Sony spent a fortune giving many key 3rd party developers sweetheart deals to bring their games out on Playstation instead of N64. Say what you will about Nintendo's 3rd party licensing but it treated everyone equally. The N64 was significantly superior to the Playstation in terms of hardware. That is an objective fact that is not up for debate and you need only compare the most ambitious exclusives on each system to see that. You TROLLBOTS just don't know when to quit.

framerate problems on N64 are mainly caused by its memory latency, but on N64 it's mainly frame-drops therefore a "choppy" framerate while on PS1 it's more often slowdowns or the whole game being slower than on N64 (because the frame-drops on N64 doesn't slow down the animations and the dynamism of the game), that said the good developers were able to achieve good framerates or make better choices for a stable framerate (banjo-Kazooie at 30 fps with very good texture work, OOT with stable 20 fps and very dynamic action in large areas, etc)

@@iwanttocomplain SNES's processors is 16-bit in its core. It emulates 8-bit operation for backward compatibility with its predecessor. But is really 16-bit. For N64, 64-bit cpu was useless back in the day. It became usefull only with Xbox One and PS4. In this game on N64 everyting looks like compressed. At the begining of the generation cartridge was not a big problem, because most of the games did not use more than couple or tens of MB on CD-ROM, everything was full with FMVs and streamed CD quality music. But at the end like here, it's very dramatic. N64 version of this game is 16MB, PS1 version is 569MB.

Just to kill the narrative some seem to spin against the NIntendo 64 hardware and ROM Cartridges... the Sony PlayStation launched in Japan in December 1994... so even if the North American launch was in September 1995 it does NOT change the fact that it launched in Japan in 1994 simply because Sony was new and was not ready for a worldwide launch back then.. Sega was ready for a worldwide launch in 1994 but Sega of America's management staff refused to support the Sega Saturn... which is why SoA management got their way to create the 32X and dupe or scam Sega headquarters in Japan into making it under fears of high prices and consumers, in fact if you wrote to the Official Sega Visions magazine in 1994 and asked about the Sega Saturn (because it was officially announced in January 1993 Japan and all the gamer magazines were talking about it) what you would get told was "go check out the 32X" like a tool. Nintendo launched halfway in 1996 because they were targeting some high clock speeds with the N64 processors, that was why they could not launch in 1995, therefore Nintendo 64 was brand new hardware... This means that by the year 2000 the Sony PlayStation documentation tools are TWO whole years MORE ADVANCED so even a scrub game dev by the year 2000 could have the potential to make an amazing looking and playing game. Meanwhile VideoSystem devs under Ubi Soft were still evolving as game devs making F1 racing games so it's not the same but you can see that they do no need to use FMV and use voices and music more efficiently... The other problem with Nintendo 64 is that it did not ship at launch with the 4MB RAM Pack... that arrived in 1997 or 98 under third party dev requests and it was successful in selling tons of 4MB RAM Packs because in North America most N64 owners actually supported Nintendo... however that still does not mean a game dev can require the 4MB RAM Pack for game programming and design because they might alienate those who did not buy it and games take an average of two years to one year to develop or more even back then so if VideoSystem and UBISOFT took the risk of requiring the 4MB RAM Pack and using the largetst ROM size at that time it means they would have had to design the 3d engine for that since around 1998...if they did it would have been a clear game over.. that is what makes the N64 version as it is just way more impressive given the limitations... remember even Sega Dreamcast Flag to Flag racing game has foggy graphics at times and wasn't this major leap despite the hardware.

PS1 normalized videogames for $50. N64 games were still on average $70 like during the SNES and Genesis era because it uses carts. Sega Saturn games were originally $60 but when Sega saw what Sony was doing in 1995, they quickly matched Sony's prices in 1996.

@miguelelgueta5830 N64 was also much more difficult to develop for, so releasing later was not necessarily an advantage since it took more time for developers to master it and to see games that used it really well.

@@misterniggo7635 PS1 titles usually look sharper compared to N64 being rather blurry. However, it’s important to note that games that were directly ported from the PS1 usually tend to take full advantage of that system’s hardware and not so much about N64, hence why many cross platform games look and run worse than on PS1.

The PlayStation has less RAM than the N64. Unless you're talking about cartridge capacity versus CD capacity. But I think the actual problem is that the N64 was harder to program for. A lot of developers didn't know how to do it well.

The N64 version has a more realistic look with more shading and color gradations on the track as well as a more naturalistic sky. The car looks like it has a bit more shading on the N64 as well. Everything just looks a little flat on the Playstation version. To be fair some of this may have more to do with different outputs being used to display these two games as the Playstation game doesn't quite look like what the Playstation looked like on a CRT back in the day. Who really cares though. These two turds are completely blown away by the top notch F-1 World Grand Prix games on N64.

Dude the rear wang on PS is DANCING???? I just hate how PS has so much polygon warp and absolutely no texture filtering...
@frxn211
@frxn211 Ай бұрын
Texture filtering back then wasn't used as a norm, far from it. The n64 was unique to it, and to detriment to it's image quality, producing a very blurry image alongside the anti-aliasing due to the resolutions at the time being low. It was ahead of it's time, but texture filtering on such ugly low resolution files wasn't really a win. The PSX wobbliness could actually be fully prevented! but only a few devs ever put the work for it, like Quake 2.
