In Damon Hill's book "Watching the Wheels", he describes this race. Going into the final laps he says how he felt exhausted and he had nothing else to give. He knew Michael Schumacher was somewhere behind him but not sure where. He apparently said "Ayrton, if you're up there, I could use a hand...." he described after that as having an out of body experience from the start of the lap all the way through the S Curves, like the car was driving itself. It lasted until the hairpin after the bridge. He said he never again felt so in the groove like that. Quite an emotional read.

Some form of traction control was allegedly hidden in the engine software, which Benetton claimed was never used. It is worth noting that the team were led by Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds at the time (the same people who brought you 'Crashgate' in the 2008 Singapore GP). And back then William were masters of shooting themselves in the foot with fumbled pitstops and strategy calls that left their drivers exposed, a bit like Ferrari last season.
