That initial high idle when you first started the engine after changing the IAC is caused by the needle being in an unknown position. The IACs come from the manufacturer with the needle wide open. The ECU then runs the needle to the position to hit the target idle speed. It's not a relearn, so much as an initial positioning.

Whats incredible about this video is that you were able to replicate every single symptom, almost on cue,lol,that never happens when you are trying to show someone whats wrong specially a paid mechanic. I have the same symptoms on my car but a new idle control motor didn't help it,reason i believe is my ECM is 30 years old and capacitors and processors start to go out and no matter what you do its not gonna fix the problem until the ECM gets overhauled.

I want to say thank you so much for your video. I can barely check fluids and add them...lol. I had a 'friend' who kept saying he'd check my 2001 expedition. Almost a month lost to waiting. Finally got the part myself and change the Idle control valve MYSELF!! Only issues I had was the stupid bolts...lol. and the plug in was on bottom on new one, instead of side like old one. while in park or at light engine RPMs lower just a bit then goes back to normal then it does it again various times so this iac seems like it's the first step that's cheap and easy so why not do it first in going to attempt to do it on my own.

My 2002 F150 Lightning had a surging issue more than a dying issue. It also kept wanting to bring its own idle up in park, and while coming to a stop. Definitely driveable, but needs fixing. I'm also having to do a relearn. Basically let it idle in park then turn ac on let it idle then press parking brake all the way and put it in drive and let it idle then go drive for 30 minutes as you normally drive even if its aggressive (fast) driving.

Hi there, I'm hoping you give a reply to this! Id love a little advice. I'm getting to feel a little hopeless here haha. I live in the wilderness and my money is very limited so I gotta be careful with what I buy. I've had all the same symptoms including a truck that won't start sometimes. I replaced an EGR tube that had a crack, a bunch of vacuum lines that needed replacing, spark plugs, coil packs, fuel pump, fuel filter and oil change. I kept replacing possible things as my problems would seemingly go away then come back, leaving me stranded in town. I've been good for months. Then my battery died when I left my door open. Happened so many times during the truck repair episode too. Soon before it died, it was driving fine but I got the same exact error code. P0171 bank 2 too lean Sometimes in the past it would have bank one and two too lean. P0171 and P0174. Well I replaced my battery. The error code is now gone. Drove 100 miles and then this morning my truck is revving weird after starting. No code on code reader yet but boggin down then revving up. Not too dramatic but very noticable. Then I drove home and truck is staying steady now in rpm on the rpm gauge. I can however feel a slight chop or chug sometimes while idling. I'm 25 miles away from town, so I can't chance breaking down along the way. Someone can bring me a part though. Should I get the idle air control valve haha?? What do you think about this?

I don't care what anyone say these IAC throws a p0174 and a p0171 code, I unplug this IAC while my engine is running the car stalls right out, I reconnect the wires and start the engine the car cough like crazy before and catches itself b4 it stall out, the the engine is starving for fuel but this IAC is letting into much air. My car goes into limp mode when starting off the computer trying to make up the lack of fuel under a load so tranny kick into limp mode because of the lack of vacuum and my engine revs up to kick it into 2nd gear, I really misses the 2 and 4 barrels holly carbs these emission controls are junk, you running around like crazy to figure out the issue.

Mine is not idling and fluctuates up and down, I replaced with standard brand in December and runs fine until today it is fluctuating again, since I have a warranty on it the seller is willing to give me a refund just return the item, I'm in the process and shopping for another brand like Hitachi IAC for $43 like $10 cheaper than Standard brand.OEM is $60 so Might consider the one that will last.

I have a problem. Every winter, cold days. My 2002 ford f150 4.6, will crank fine, run great, but on those cold days if I get in and drive off. It will run fine, then surge. It want take the gas. It stalls and surge. I've replaced, IAC, all that stuff under the hood. And even fuel pump. Still does same thing , in cold weather or cold mornings. If I let it warm up, it will not surge or stalls. It runs fine. No problems in the summer or warm to hot days

Mine seems to act up after highway driving. When the engine is cold, it starts and runs fine. After highway driving, it revs to 2500 when I put it in park. ??? IAC ???

Most likely your IAC is failing. During highway driving, the engine is under load and the vacuum generated can overwhelm a weakend spring inside of the IAC, causing very high idle. The truck might otherwise act normal

My 1996 F150 with a 302 seems to be doing that, I installed a new MAF and it idles a lot smoother I noticed but sometimes it still starts shaking a little bit, but not constantly like it was before the MAF change. I also have been doing the drive into neutral test while driving and sometimes it revs up high then comes down, sometimes it just goes right back down. I noticed when I put the truck in park after driving up the highway for 40 mins to help my friend move a table, the truck idled at 1000 RPMs and kept fluctuating back and forth between 1000 and 900 until I shut it off, waited a few mins then turned it back on to move the truck and it was completely fine. I bought the new IAC just to be on standby because I’m still not completely sure if it’s that, I don’t have the CEL DTC code popping up for it either, I guess only when it’s on it’s last leg is when it throws the code is my assumption but I’m definitely gonna be fixing to change it ASAP to see if that makes a difference.

After a few months same thing happened then cleaned the iac valve also went away after that. Couple weeks it started to do it again any help on what could it be thank you

I have a 2012 fx4 5.0 coyote engine, the idle has been dipping to 450rpm to 500rpm not up and down just steady, I recently had my water pump replaced, and when it idled before it was around 650 to 700rpms, now it idles at 450 500rpms, and low oil pressure light comes on ? If I hold the peddle to keep it at 700rpms no low oil pressure warnings??? Any help

I have a 2001 4.2. I changed this part and it seemed ok when I started it up. Took it for a short drive and the idle issue is back. It’s manual transmission. In neutral or in gear while at a stop it idles up and down over and over like it might die. Changed the plugs and ran sea foam in the tank. New battery. Replaced air flow sensor. What could this be? Please help.

You could have a vacuum leak allowing unmetered air into the intake manifold. A common culprit is the pcv hoses.

I have a 94 f150 302, my truck is a 4 speed with od. She would surge when accelerating hard, especially going uphill.The guy at the auto store told me to remove the IAC and clean it. It did good for about a week and started again. Tried cleaning it again but the same. The truck hasn’t ran for 8 months before I got it. Do you think I need a new IAC? Or maybe it’s something else? Overall, the truck runs great. Any ideas?! Thanks

Thank the car gods for youtube mechanics. It's saved me 1000's of dollars in mechanic fees over the years. I hate spending money when I don't have to. 20or30 dollar parts would cost you 100-200 dollars for a mechanic to install then of course you have the dishonest ones that try to con you into replacing things that dont need replacing. I used to work at an auto parts store and deliver to all the local mechanics and I know first hand how shady they can be.

My older F150 would do that same thing. I found that idle air controller valve would got sticky. To fix it, I took the plastic manifold part off intake to the throttle body and sprayed throttle body cleaner into it hole before the throttle plate. The engine lugged and after the idle stabilized, I'd repeat the cycle a few more times and it fixed the problem. I do not know why it would get sticky but the problem was solved.

It blew my maf fuse (because the wires are a bit exposed) added the fuse back on and kept idling like shit but it got me home and now I need to know if this shit is the problem.

Yes that was an early warning sign. A vacuum leak (most likely in the pcv hose) can also cause that

I have the same thing happening. My mechanic did find the vacuum hoses for the dpfe sensor were leaking and replaced them. This helped slightly but didn't resolve the issue. His scan tool also showed some occasional misfires. He moved coils (coil over plug) around but the misfires didn't follow the coils. Did you ever get your issue resolved because I haven't yet. My problem just started.

Mine lasted 23 years. That is if FixD diagnosed it correctly. And if my eBay purchased one for $30.76 last as long. Fuel Pump I replace from eBay stock lasted 2 years. Amazing thing with his history they had a used one on eBay for more then new ones.

@@LehewTech the idle isnt dropping. the problem is that it feels like it loses 50 horsepower and accelerates alot slower than normal and then the transmission starts shifting bad. hard delayed shifts. at idle it stays around 800rpm. once i turn the ac off the trucks power goes back to normal and the trans goes back to shifting normally.

I got a P1504 on my 99 Expedition 5.4L. "Manufacture control" was what my scanner read. Surely enough it was the IACV. Put a new one in and problem fixed.
