When you mention chipping fluid, what is that? I do notice your use the tooth pick, but exactly when do you do this step, after clear coat, before, and chipping fluid? Please advise, and what an incredible build, learned a lot from an exceptional video. thank you, I appreciate it!
@ScaleModelAssassin5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! chipping fluid is the name of the product I'm using. Mig and AK are a couple brands that sell it. Hairspray is also a cheap substitute that will give similar effects. It's just a water soluble layer that delays the paint from biting into the plastic. I'll clear coat the model, spray the chipping fluid (wait 5 minutes until dry), then spray my topcoat...in this case, blue (wait until it's dry to touch), then start brushing with water/toothpick. You don't want to wait hours or days like you normally would to let everything completely set. Otherwise the paint will cure and you won't be able to chip very easily.

@bac62532 жыл бұрын
Great job on this build! I have the Aires cockpit set for my Corsairs and I have a question for you. I just noticed that i will have to remove the top of the dash portion which is molded in to pieces A8 and A25 in order to install the resin front bulkhead (the piece which has the instrument panel). But I noticed that removing the piece of the dashboard of the fuselage that sits under the windshield to install this bulkhead will move the bulkhead/instrument panel further forward that the kit has it molded. Is this the intention and the resin front bulkhead is modeled as a "corrected" part? Also, I saw reviews from some other people who said they tried using the Aires resin cockpit set but it just did not fit, no matter how much sanding or trimming they did. Did the cockpit give you any trouble? What did you do to get it to fit? Thanks for any information you can provide.
@ScaleModelAssassin2 жыл бұрын
I don't recall any specifics with the cockpit because it was a few years ago when I built this. I do remember the gun bay was tough to fit between the wing halves so I have a feeling the cockpit would have been the same. I had to sand the plastic in addition to the resin. The general theme I've seen with resin parts on multiple builds is that I'll do tons of sanding, and then I'll sand some more, and then I'll sand some of the plastic part. The parts have to be very thin and nearly translucent. Ill hold them up to the light and if I cant see a bit thru it, then Ill keep going with the sandpaper.

At 29 years old, this Corsair is my first model, and given your level of mastery, it is intimidating. Mine is from Tamiya, and is 1:48, but isn't exactly the same, not as detailed. Not using an airbrush, what is a method to transfer small amounts of paint from the jar to a mixing/thinning surface? I keep thinking about an eye dropper, but then I'll need a ton of different eye droppers, for each color. Thanks for the excellent video.
@ScaleModelAssassin6 жыл бұрын
Aside from an eye dropper, you can hold a toothpick vertical against the edge of the jar. The paint will run down the toothpick and not cause as much of a mess on the side of the jar. You can also just glob it out of the jar with a thick paintbrush. Im still a fan of the eye droppers though, especially if you need to precisely mix colors. You can buy a package of a 200-300 2ml eye droppers on amazon for around $10. Use a different dropper for each color, but you can keep reusing droppers for the same color until they clog up. I dont clean them, I just squeeze as much paint out as I can before I set it off to the side. A pack of 200 droppers got me through ~20 models and lasted over a year. Good luck with your foray into modelling!

@@broiscringe2759 ahh those must be external drop tanks (I was originally thinking an internal fuel tank). I typically just stick those in a drawer and save them in case I need them in the future. Its not uncommon to get extra parts like that in case you wanted to build a diorama and have 1 or 2 tanks off to the side. I think some Corsairs had 2 tanks like that so its up to you if you want to pull some pics off the internet and try attaching 2 tanks versus the smaller one that the instructions show to attach.

so let me ask you something. what would you charge someone if they wanted you to build an f4u 1a corsair but have marines put on the side of the fuselage?
@ScaleModelAssassin6 жыл бұрын
The quick answer is that it depends and I'll need some more information from you. Basically I would charge "at cost" for the materials/shipping and then track my time for an hourly rate. The hours depend greatly on if you want the base kit or a bunch of add ons like the engine showing or gun bays. I'd guess I spent about 60 hours on this Corsair. Also I'm based in the US so shipping could be expensive if it's international. PM me and we can talk some more details. I.e kit type (Tamiya?), add ons, shipping location, etc.

Amateur question: What paint/mixture of some sort did you use for the exhaust stains?
@ScaleModelAssassin6 жыл бұрын
No worries, I used pigment for the exhaust stains. Specifically the MIG Ammo pigment (black). Brushed it on, Sealed it with the pigment fixer (which is basically mineral spirits/white spirits), and then spray on a clear coat. Sorry I didnt get good video footage of it on this plane. Ill have to show the process in the future.
