Hats off to Connie, in the few seconds she had to react, she slowed the airplane down and then pivoted on that wheel to keep the friction down. All this while not having the advantage of seeing what she was dealing with as we who are watching from the camera view do. I'll bet her first thought was whether she was riding on the belly tank. Nevertheless, an excellent job Connie, well done!

If this is anything like the Corsair and TBM wheels that I'm used to (aka magnesium) - which I assume it is given the TBM was Grumman and the Navy liked to keep things similar... magnesium was NOT meant to last 75 years, let's just put it that way lol.

It's obvious that the tire left the wheel but what did the accident investigation reveal? Tire failure or a mechanical failure?

Rick Daystar I think technically both are types of mechanical failures. Slowing down the video, it looks like a tire failure. I don’t see the rim come apart entirely. There’s the remains of a ring flying off in a cloud of depressurizing air, but I can’t tell if it’s rubber or metal. The tire bead appears to just jump over the rim on a wheel that’s probably made of two magnesium halves bolted together. Probably with an inner tube. I’m guessing over inflation combined with an old tire. That wheel ain’t going to be cheap to replace. :-( At some point the pilot applied the breaks, and then the mag wheel went up in flames spectacularly. I work on cars, not planes. Maybe I am wrong. Upon rewatching it a few times, I want to bet on metal failure of the outer half of the wheel. I say this because the inner and outer tire beads look about the same as it’s rolling off on its own. No apparent tire damage from the low-ish resolution video.

@@jonnda Ya know I think you made a great observation. I believe the rim failed releasing the bead. I know magnesium is light and strong but does not handle repeated stress and flexing. Maybe something as small as a nick on the rim started a spot for a crack to start. I don't know if the rims are x-rayed or NDI ( non destruction inspection) was done before they were sent out for use.

That may have been really lucky that stopping the naked mag wheel with the brakes didnt start the magnesium on fire. that could have started a fire that they may not have been able to put out---- (that would have sucked---) Guessing that wheels was mag and not aluminum---- Thank God no fire and no prop strike !!!! Could it have been JUST the tube rupturing ? Maybe the tube was pinched and applying the brakes tore it internally when the tire flexed ? Could have been much worse ! and hey---- how come no one running out there with an extinguisher ? I'd have been there before it stopped rolling ! (if I could have --)
