FA Cup quarter-finals weekend so as a treat here's all the goals scored in this round of the competition from 1986-87, 1987-88 and 1988-89. Includes all four sixth round ties ending in away wins in 1987, Brian Clough winning at this stage for the first time ever at Arsenal in 1988 (and then again at Old Trafford a year later), Wimbledon coming from behind with 10 men to beat Watford en route to winning the cup and Liverpool demolishing Manchester City and Brentford by 4-0 scorelines.

Look at the leppings lane end for the sheff wed v Coventry game. Dangerous ain't the word but we just accepted it back then. I know I did at the time and wouldn't have had it any different. Just goes to show how close we were to a disaster most week's back then without knowing it

And people still want to return to those days! Every big match at every big ground was a disaster waiting to happen. If it didn't happen at Hillsborough on that day it would have happened somewhere else on another day. 😕

Yeah, it was stupidly dangerous but people just accepted it. I used to go to Villa Park on the old Holte End. 22,000 I think that terrace held. When it was full it was scary. Hard to believe that anyone would consider that safe.

@@craigeast3682 But Hillsborough was always a more likely candidate considering its shit design and poor crowd management.

Scherben - what I could never understand was the need for pens. Not just Hillsborough but Villa Park also. When we played Sheff Wed we had the entire Leppings Lane. Why the need to seperate the same supporters?

@@garethfieldstead7547 Wednesday introduced those pens after the near disaster at the 1981 Semi-Final between Spurs and Wolves. I think the idea was to have other sections to divert people to as they came through the tunnel, rather than just automatically take the shortest route to the centre. That only works when you have competent organisation, rather than the "bollox, no-one would have died" attitude of the Wednesday chairman at the time [1981].

You can see people being pushed up against the fence at 4:00. 10,000 penned in that tiny terrace behind the goal is a disgrace.

Precursor to 1989 in that 1987 QF at Hillsborough. How it never happened before then was a miracle.

1970, 1976, 1977, 1981, 1987. All semi-finals that had overcrowding issues at the Leppings Lane end. Wednesday's chairman, Bert McGee, said of the 1981 incident: "Bollox. No-one would have died." This prick was not only still in charge in 1989, but in 1991 he was awarded the OBE for services to Sheffield.

@@scherben8870 1988 had overcrowding issues at the leppings lane end as well. A Liverpool fan wrote to the FÃ complaining about the problems on that terrace. Apparently his umbrella broke in half due to the overcrowding. The official capacity for the 2 central pens was about a thousand too high. Pen 3 alone should have been 700-800 instead of the reported capacity of 1,200.

Throwing things at the officials - why do people think their admission money gives them the right to do so? MOTD confirmed the Ref was right and Williams be reminded as a pro - play to whistle.
