Just my half a cent: Because they are oil based, the won't be any wax bloom. You found a very good price for the bullet sharpner. I've heard they are great (read on books LOL). Thank you for your patience in doing reviews I got the 120, but that's just me, love all those colors, and I haven't a life either! Thank you. Just subscribed!

Loved the review! I have a full set of 120 and 36, I have used FC pencils my whole life and can't imagine using anything else. As for the skin tones, well German made product, I cant imagine a black German. They all look extra white with pink suntan in the summer. I guess it is just one of those things.

I have Prismacolors, polychromos and luminance colored pencils. I agree that the polychromos are wonderful. Just wanting people to know that the polychromos are oil based and others are waxed based. Some people that will matter to, I haven't had an issue. I use the blender pencil, the white and also Gamsol (odorless mineral spirits) to blend and you can mix these pencils with your Prismacolors if you already own them. This was a great and thorough review, thanks for sharing with all of us!

+Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault exactly! They should be named after flowers or similar! That's what Crayola has been doing for 50 years and it works great!
@weasel2825
@weasel2825 7 жыл бұрын
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault you are right, but they are called flesh color or cream color. I still think it's called flesh because of the red look (like meat). for the light "skin" color I use cinnamon. for the darker skin color I love to use burnt orche or wood brown. the closest to white skin I have seen is cream. And yet it's a German company since 1761, back then it was usual to call it that way. but I hope they change it soon😋
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 7 жыл бұрын
Wessel they told me when called them and more than once since then they mean skin not meat. They laughed at the notion that it might mean meat. On person said "It says, "flesh" how does that mean meat, Im confused" . I dont understand why people dont want to believe it means what they say it means.

I like that you can get individual pencils to add to the set. Thank you for a very informative review and I look forward to more.

I think the flesh color is that shade because they are made in germany, i think they have a differnt sensibility when it comes to race and skin color...obviously...lol...i just ordered the 120 set and im waiting for them to come in the mail. Even though i have the 36 set im still kind of excited about getting the 120...weird i know.

You are correct on the skin tone. I won't fault them for it. But if they were American they would totally get minus points for it. You are not crazy! I have the 60 set but I'm thinking of getting the wood case of 120! So you aren't crazy.

Hi Karia! First, let me say how much I love your videos. I am just getting into coloring as an adult and have watched a ton of youtube videos. By far, yours are the most informative and fun. Second, I am looking to buy a good quality set of pencils. I initially bought an expensive set of Heritage pencils from Amazon but realized after doing some research that there is a real difference between quality of pencils. I have really like the idea of the soft Prismacolor pencils for their creamy, blendable properties. However, I have heard and read a lot about the breaking issues with Prismacolor pencils and that the quality has declined in recent years. You make the Polychromos look awesome but I am a little concerned about the hardness factor with these and whether they go on as smoothly and blend as well as the Prismacolor. After using both for a time, would you still recommend Polychromos over the Prismas? Thanks!!!!!!
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 8 жыл бұрын
Hello, Yes I do still recommend the polychromos. They are slightly harder. But they aren't rocks. They go on smoothly and there is no breakage at all. They are really good and very much better than the prismacolor so if you can afford a set of 36 or more they are well worth it!

I'm a stamper and card maker...would you suggest I get the 60 or 120? I have a large set of Prismacolor but I find I don't use or need all the colours. Do you feel the 60 set has a well enough rounded pallet or should I just get the 120?
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 8 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Kropf I had the 60 set and just upgraded to the 120 set and honestly find myself using mostly the same colors I always have. So unless you love collecting all the colors I would say the 60 set has most of the best colors (except Indian red and burnt umber).

@catherinehascake9173
@catherinehascake9173 9 жыл бұрын
+Charlene Gibson I find eye liner sharpener amazing. The problem with Polychromos or Luminance is they have a thick leads. I find it wasteful if you use a regular sharpener, and get a sharp long lead. Thicker the lead is, longer the exposed lead will be. I mean if you're sharpening it, you're making the tip thinner, and more lead will just get throw away... I also prefer eye liner sharpener, because they are designed to handle soft leads. Polychromos might not be that bad as oil based, but Luminance is really soft with a wax core.
@TonyGruber2009
@TonyGruber2009 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, I was just wondering if the oil based colored pencils can bleed through the pages in an adult coloring book the way a colored marker would? Thanks Tony
@ColoringKaria
@ColoringKaria 8 жыл бұрын
No. There is some confusion on this. Oil is a binder but it's not dripping or excreting oil. It is will work exactly the same as any other colored pencil. The only thing is that some wax based pencils MAY have some wax bloom if you use too many layers, so some people prefer oil based pencils. But this will not damage the page or excrete any oily residue. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

I have really been enjoying your pencil reviews. I have these pencils also. I do have the Caran d-ache and the old Berol Prismacolor. I have a question for you. Did the Number 139, Light Violet, come in any of your Polychromos sets? I can't find this pencil where I live so I had to order it from the UK. It is such a beautiful color and I wonder why it is not sold in Arizona. My local Dick Blick can not even order it.

I cannot decide between this brand and the Prisma brand. Plus, I am on a strict budget, since I am disabled. Art is just in my soul and I am in to many, many different styles. I use Talenti Gelato pint sized ice cream containers for my colored pencils. I place coiled cotton wound in a spiral in the bottom of each container to steady the pencils and keep them from knocking into one another. My desk space is limited so it seems the best alternative to the tins for me. The only downside I have found is when the pencils get shorter I have to keep them around the outside of the container so I can find them. But the cotton helps them stay where I put them. I'm not so good at designing a palette for my coloring pages so I just pull colors at random to suit my tastes. I do want to learn more about palettes though. Cheers!

I agree about your comments about the 'flesh' colour pencil. Derwent coloursoft pencils another professional grade pencil made in the UK do a small tin of skin tone pencils that range from the lightest to darkest tones. They are not called flesh coloured but are the colours from their range which if used together should allow to you create the full range of skin tones. They included tones such as brown earth, dark terracotta, ochre, blush pink, pink and cream. You should be able to get these in the USA, but with all your Polychromos pencils, you probably have duplicates for these amongst them. I really enjoyed your review and the detail you put into it. I have both Polychromos pencils and the Derwent coloursoft and use them together. They are great pencils and well worth the money. Looking forward to your other reviews.

I just got the 12 set of Faber-Castell Polychromos. I really like them! The packaging is great, the pencils are nice and protected. The pencils are very pigmented and they layer well and surprisingly they blend good! ( at least for me) I might of accepted them to be slightly better, but they still are definitely the best colored pencils I’ve ever used. Are all the different colors that you have listed in other comments that you bought separately included in the 120 set? And how much are they to buy separately? I saw the 120 on Amazon and the one they have ships from Japan, or a lot do-and is 240 or so? There is one listed for 198 but unclear as to quality. I'm wondering the best and most reliable place to get the 120 if I ever can (haven't even started coloring yet!) for the best price. Sorry for all the questions!

The 120 set includes all the colors they make. So the colors I listed should be included in the 120 set. I did a video on getting the best deal on pencils. That might be of help. Hi which additional colors would you recommend to get? I you just bought the set of 60 but I was debating to get 120 but maybe I should just add to the 60. Please let me know. Great video!! =)

+Marcela Van Hefty Thank you so much, if you can afford to get the set 120 instead of 60 i say go for it. the tins are great and very good for holding your pencils. I dont think there is any reason to get 60 and have 60 loose pencils. i ended up getting only about 15 extra pencils. Individual pencils really do cost a lot more than getting them in pack.

Marcela Van Hefty YES! though i dont think you will want to. except the white the polychromos white is almost clear. i will say what colors i got that i used to most if you are going with 60: most used color is 280 Burnt Umber (it is great for any trees or ground or anything) Other colors i use a lot that are NOT included in the 60 pack: 278 Chrome Oxide Green (a subtler green) 143 Cobalt blue (a bright bold crayola blue) 192 India Red(a deeper red) 263 Caput Mortuum Violet (a brown with purpley undertones) 159 Hooker's Green (ok i just got this for the name but its still a good color) Let me know if you have any questions! karia

haha nothing is over kill if you enjoy it. Honestly, coloring isn't the same between crayola and Polychromos. If you want your picture to have all the details and gradients, you know crayola isn't going to be the same as your Polychromos. I find the flesh color kind of cute. In Taiwan a peachy flesh color is literally called skin color. Then my family moved to the West, and I got my first box of Crayola, I was like... I don't have skin color. But, I understand the whole reason for that when I grew up a little. Now, I call them my skin tone set. If I buy a set of colored pencil, and there isn't a full range of skin tone, I get upset.

I found this to be a very thorough review and because of this I will be purchasing this set. I especially like that you mentioned how long the points last. I have a few Prismacolors and they do produce nice coverage but I hate how they have to be sharpened after every other stroke. So I will be looking forward to Amazon's delivery of my Farber Castell's By the way I just subscribed. Great channel.

Great review! I have recently had the urge to try colored pencils again. Just a hint: koh I noor isn't pronounced " core e nor". It is pronounced this way- koh (think of pronouncing similar to "coal" (without the l on the end, of course) ) i (pronounced "eye") noor (pronounced similar to the oo (similar to "ewe" in "pool" or "cool"--I originally said pronounced like "poor", but most people don't use the "double o" sound and pronounce it like "pore", so that obviously wouldn't do) or "nor". So, it's pronounced "coa" (coal without the L), "eye", "nor". Also, fAber castell isn't pronounced "fIber" castell, it is faber, think "favor"-did you somehow miss the "A" in faber? Your videos have a very strong possibility of being called good, helpful videos. But if the person doing the video says "I don't know, I can't pronounce this", but obviously never tries to find out exactly how to pronounce the word/brand, that person loses all credibility.

+tammynwes thank you for your comment. This was one of my first videos. It's clear to most I *DID* try, I tried, and failed, but try I did. otherwise I would not have said anything at all. As for Faber Castell, when I called their 1800 line the person who works for them pronounced both ways. My honesty with viewers may have "lost all credibility" with you, but since posting this video I have gained 1800 subscribers, and 118,000 lifetime views. I think my credibility, unlike my pronunciation, is doing lovely. Most fans choose to offer corrections rather than impugn my credibility for being human and imperfect. As a rule my fans care more about accurate information than perfect pronouciation in German, French, etc. Your mileage may vary.

Nice review. I love my FCP's! As for the "flesh" tone, if you turn your hand over and look at your palm, that is the actual color of your flesh. The brown is simply the pigment in your skin. So, if you hold the medium flesh color against your palm, you will see the "flesh" tone is not really that far off. It is slightly darker, because it is "medium" flesh. The "dark" flesh pencil, is way off - it's more of a pink shade - but maybe it can be compared more to our lips. They have dark, medium, and light tones of the flesh color in the FCP colors, but don't seem to have one that is just labeled "flesh", so I guess the medium is supposed to represent the basic flesh tone. However, it is actually a bit dark for the natural flesh color, as you can see by placing it against your palm. ;)

+momicajack Thank you for watching. I called them and the said they meant skintone, not the inside meat. Which is like calling a color "fruit" or "fur" things they would never do because there are so many tones for both. It is illogical but for reasons that are beyond the scope of this vlog, people want to do.
@momicajack
@momicajack 9 жыл бұрын
That is true. It takes so many different colors to make up skin tones that there is no single pencil that would be correct. I am learning to work with color pencil in my drawing (I was used to doing graphite before) and you might have, say, a red rose, and a lot of people would think that was simple - 3 or 4 colors: Red, Green and maybe yellow or brown. But that is so far off. I drew a realistic rose that took me about 30 or so of my colors just to draw it! By the way, you have a great wife to buy you such wonderful gifts! Treat her well! =)

+momicajack The name is Fleischfarbe in German and means "Flesh Color" (Fleischmann is a butcher). Flesh is the color of meat, not skin, and everyone has the same color of flesh (that is their muscle). Even most mammals have that color of "flesh". Everyone seem to be confusing skin tones for the underlying muscle colors which is mostly just the color of blood (with some fat (white to off-white to pale yellow) and the connective tissue of animals. (Not trying to be gross or anything, just FYI.

I purchased this set for nearly $100 and was disappointed in the hardness of the lead. They did not have that creamy feel like Prismacolor pencils do and felt scratchy on the paper.
@ColoringKaria

prismacolor are likely some of the softest pencils on the market. I dont think i have tried any colored pencil that was oil and softer or as soft. The Luminance pencils are softer but that means that the lead goes down faster. However they should not be scratchy particularly since they require a very soft hand to make a mark. But no one brand of pencil is perfect for everyone. I am sure if you call Faber Castell they can assist you with any problems or issues that you might have. :) i hope that helps, Karia

It's because it uses a different base than prismas(oil based instead of wax). What it does better tho is that it doesn't have the wax bloom that prisma has. Also if you're clumsy like me and you happen to drop pencils a lot, youll see that they are far more durable than the prismas. ref: I used to use both
