Somehow feels its a bit overrated. Not that I dislike Carlsen. But once you choose to exchange your queen for three minor pieces, thats what you ought to do. Put the two knights in a position where they defend each other and away from the opponents pawn range. Not just versus queen, if you are facing a rook versus 2 knights scenario, thats one of the default strategies. To have your knights protect each other and then use your king in a more aggressive role.

One of the things that's so striking about Magnus on defense is how willing he is to play ugly moves when necessary to hold his position together, and somehow untangle later . For a short while it seemed like Giri was piling on the pressure and forcing some concessions and it was hard to see how Magnus would get coordinated. Yet a few moves later Giri's initiative had completely evaporated and his heavy pieces were unable to make a credible threat. And of course that's the quintessential Magnus style, but to see him pull it off against a 2700 in Blitz time control is something else.

This was defintiely one of the better games I have seen in a while. Queen sacrifices which are equal in material AREN'T bad but it's always a mental danger to do at such high level as 3 pieces can easier make a mistake than 1 piece. Yet, MC has the confidence (and ability of course) to do it at this level and hence why it looks so nice. Very well played! :p

Definitely my favourite online rapid game. I can't imagine how useless Anish Queen was when Magnus finally found a way to coordinate those 3 pieces leaving Anish no chance of winning or forcing a draw at all. It inspired me to try it and it somehow worked. I'm still in complete disbelief that this was two years ago cause it feels like yesterday, I'm watching this live.
