If you're referring to the lyrics, "The planet is a gun boat in a sea of fear" may be my favourite line ever written for a song. I've been spending months trying to figure out what it means.
@tadflobug3 жыл бұрын
did you figured it out?
@vzmol3 жыл бұрын
@@tadflobug someone mentioned existential crisis and I cannot agree more. So while there are times when he just stares out of a window, asking "where do we go from here" and feeling alone, sometimes he feels the whole world pressing and "chasing" him. That would be the part with the gunboat. Then he's at the bar to forget all these problems, but the doubts stay. Having a girlfriend but desperately wishing for a real friend. Wanting to show who he really is, but being afraid to do so. Wishing to have meaningful place in the society, being useful, being fulfilled and happy. Being able to breath freely... For me, the strongest thing here is, that he uses the same lyrics at the beginning and at the end. It's wrapped around the whole song. In the beginning the "where are you now, when I need you" is in a tone of, I would say despise - and the same line at the end is a broken wish for someone to come and comfort him. When the song ends, the "when I need you..." seems like all he's been trying to tell the whole time. Not all the nonsense with wishing it was the 60's or being blown away by CIA. He's just feeling really alone deep in his soul... I just reminded myself, that I know this feeling too well :-)

RADIOHEAD - THE BENDS Where do we go from here? The words are coming out all weird Where are you now when I need you? Alone on an aeroplane Fall asleep on against the window pane My blood will thicken I need to wash myself again To hide all the dirt and pain Cause I'd be scared that there's nothing underneath But who are my real friends? Have they all got the bends? Am I really sinking this low? My baby's got the bends, oh no We don't have any real friends, no, no, no Just lying in the bar with my drip feed on Talking to my girlfriend, waiting for something to happen I wish it was the sixties, I wish I could be happy I wish, I wish, I wish that something would happen Where do we go from here? The planet is a gunboat in a sea of fear And where are you? They brought in the CIA The tanks and the whole marines to blow me away To blow me sky high My baby's got the bends We don't have any real friends Just lying in the bar with my drip feed on Talking to my girlfriend, waiting for something to happen I wish it was the sixties, I wish I could be happy I wish, I wish, I wish that something would happen I wanna live, breathe I wanna be part of the human race I wanna live, breathe I wanna be part of the human race, race, race, race Where do we go from here? The words are coming out all weird Where are you now when I need you?

"Am i really sinking this low?" Entonces cuando el sujeto se pregunta "but where are my real friends? Have they all got the bends? Am i really sinking this low?" (¿Donde están mis verdaderos amigos? ¿Todos tienen el síndrome? ¿Realmente me he hundido tanto?). Es decir, cuando te "hundiste", tus "amigos" rápidamente desaparecieron. "¿realmente me he hundido tanto que me abandonaron mis amigos?.
