This song was made about Creep and how it is their ‘iron lung.’ Someone who has an iron lung has to stay lying down for the rest of their life unable to move because the iron lung is attached to them and keeping them alive. Apply this to Creep, this song expresses how the band depended on Creep to become well known and for many people it is the only Radiohead song they recognized. Creep was keeping the band from reaching their full potential and that’s where they felt like they were under an iron lung unable to move. But they needed Creep because Creep was the only recognition they had at the time. This kinda reminds me about how Nirvana was mostly only recognized for Smells Like Teen Spirit and they were requested to play it so much, they would just preform it badly or carelessly. But Nirvana still liked Smells Like Teen Spirit. Thom hated Creep so much, he refused to even play it at all.

Today, I discover that you left this world of your own free will, taking an overdose of pills until you were sound asleep. Dear brother, when I found out about that, coming to listen to this song was the only thing that occurred to me at the time, and here I am! listening to this song at 3 in the morning, while singing loudly and enjoying the music as if you are still with me to listen to it together. Brother, when you first showed me this song, you told me that we all had this song hidden within us, but we weren't brave enough to show them to everyone. Now I understand it and I am sorry I understood it too late. I love you, brother, and I will always love you. Thank you for showing me these musical wonders. These are the kinds of songs that Radiohead needs to play live. I have no problem with "Kid A" and the rest of their later albums whatsoever. They are amazing records, but their gigs would be even better if they incorporated their older songs into the set, instead of turning their backs on their past.

Radiohead always has an extremely unique sound overall, back then to this day. Such a shame a lot of people only recognize them as the “Creep band” when they have done beautiful workings of art of the years that includes this song!

Context : Radiohead made this song bcuz of creep, it's like a metaphor, creep being their "iron lung" and keeping them famous, EMI wants Radiohead to make another iconic song similiar to Creep, and so they made this as reply to EMI
@Sirebellum13378 ай бұрын
The fact that they made a whole song about how much "Creep" negatively affected them, while still keeping them alive, and made the whole thing a metaphor with the concept of an iron lung, is still astounding to me 15 years later.

Little fun fact, this song is the only Radiohead song that has slap bass in it. You can hear it if you listen closely to the chorus ("the headshrinkers" part), and you can see Colin doing it in live performances if you look.

i have a old friend who loves melodic music, HE WAS DIGGING the more relaxed part in the song and then when the more heavy part would come he lost interest and asked me how could like this? i really dont know how to explain it. the anger the frustration you can feel it... and then somehow it makes you totaly hyped and happy for some reason? what about you guys, do you experience this rush? just makes you feel alive i gues

If you think about it, this is just Radiohead’s version of Heart Shaped Box
@Swim_Jonse8 жыл бұрын
So, I had trouble placing it for a long time, but the rhythm guitar riff during the "you can be frightened" bit is actually a variation from one in Rape Me by Nirvana. Everyone always talks about how similar this song is to Heart Shaped Box but it's more than just that. Always loved this one because of all that, and that it being another (actually the last) of their grungy tracks doesn't ruin it is kind of impressive. Instead of getting angry at all the "English Nirvana" comments in a really stupid, vocal way where they distanced their material as far away as possible from Pablo Honey, they hung around the same style, sharpened it to a fine point and used it to destroy their old self and their criticism. Really clever commentary, like _seriously_ "fighting fire with fire". It's not often you see people escape from where they were by sticking with it. It usually takes a complete shift that alienates half your audience. Hilariously then, Radiohead finally did that huge shift when they were loved and didn't even need to, and they didn't care if they alienated anyone. I've always found it incredible that five people have been able to go through all this in a fairly democratic manner over 20+ years without hating each other.
@bammetjepindakaas8 жыл бұрын
Rod Jonse true buy you cannot deny that the beginning guitar solo sounds like heart shaped box and also the second guitar part which starts at about 1:58 sounds like the "Hey wait I got a real complain" part from Heart Shaped Box.
@lkjv38 жыл бұрын
Rod Jonse we can't talk about rape me variation, cause rape me chords are probably the most used in much of rock music (even smells like teen spirit has the same progression just in f, not e)
@Swim_Jonse8 жыл бұрын
lkjv3 That doesn't mean I can't employ common sense in regards to an uncannily similar part. People would note how the chord progression in Creep is ages old. Sure, fine. It's still Hollies that they admittedly based it on though.

« Jonny : (...) »My Iron Lung« was recorded live in the London Astoria and we just happened to record it onto a 24-track tape and having not done a very good version in the studio, we thought that it sounded much better from this concert, so we just used that.
