Join me on a solo wild camping adventure at the end of Winter. I explore Hard Knott fell and fly you over the Eskdale valley.
(I term “solo” to mean without any other human involvement - my spaniel is my shadow and as lovely company as he is, I’m also perfectly happy in complete solitude and it’s not as if he helps with the route planning, packing, carrying weight, navigating or pitching up!)
As ever, set up late, pack up early and leave no trace.

New to the Channel? ♥
Hi, I’m Chloe. I grew up in the lovely Devonshire countryside though, seeking wilder and more rugged landscape, now live in Cumbria on the edge of the Lake District with my husband Ryan and our spaniel, Cam,
Join us on our adventures in the fells.
We love wild camping and swimming, climbing, hiking the Wainwrights, scrambling, fell running and exploring historical sites.
I hope our videos give you a moment of calm and cosiness and a little inspiration to get out on your own adventures.

Wild Camping Ethos 🏔️ Camp above the highest fell wall, well away from towns, villages and lake shores. 🗑️Leave no litter - this includes not burying any litter and removing other people's if you find it. ❌ Don't light any fires, even if there is evidence that fires might have been lit. ⏳Stay for only one night. 🏕️ Keep groups very small - only one or two tents. 👀 Camp as unobtrusively as possible with inconspicuous tents which blend in. 🌿 Leave the campsite as you would want to find it. 🎒Carry out everything you carried in. 👝Carry out tampons and sanitary towels. Burying them doesn't work as animals dig them up again. 🌾Choose a dry pitch rather than digging drainage ditches around a tent or moving boulders. 🕳️ Perform toilet duties at least 30 metres from water and bury the results with a trowel. 🐑 At all times, help protect the environment and respect other visitors and communities. ✌🏼Wherever you pitch, please remember that the landowners or their representatives have the legal right to order you to break camp and move on. I was last in this area as a young boy of 8, I'm 59 now so it was half a century ago, which is just a blink of an eye compared to the many millenia those hills and mountains have been there! My late Father took me to the Lakes many times on holidays (I'm Nottingham born and bred) and I actually got quite emotional watching this video as it brought back many happy memories of my dear old Dad and the years of my youth....thank you, you have a new subscriber.

Your solo wild camping adventure on Hard Knott fell in the Lake District has left me in awe. .👏 Your courage and independence are a testament to the spirit of adventure that still burns brightly in our modern world. Your spaniel, Cam, may be your shadow, but your bravery shines bright on its own. The rugged landscape of the fells is a challenge to conquer, yet you have done so with grace and ease. Your flyover of the Eskdale valley was a breathtaking view that few have the privilege to witness. Your commitment to leave no trace is a testament to your love for the natural world and your responsibility to protect it. I am moved by your adventurous spirit and your love for the wilderness. Your video is a true inspiration to all those who seek to discover the beauty of the world around us. Thank you for sharing your incredible journey with us💙

There is something quite atmospheric about a desolate landscape, though the Lakes was much more naturally forested before agriculture. There are rewilding projects happening, including Hard Knott forest so I am looking forward to the trees returning.

Hello, been following your love for the outdoors for a while and your journey. I had to do a map search of this area of the UK. Hard Knot. The map search states that there was an old Roman Fort in that area and has a plaque telling about the Roman Fort. Just had to find out about your area a little bit. Its very beautiful there and quite windy. Love your hiking and camping trips. Love from the USA . Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee

@@FablesandFells The White Mountains of New Hampshire include a range called the Presidentials which, as the name suggests, are named after some prominent US presidents. Washington, not surprisingly, is the tallest at 6288 feet. Not a particularly tall mountain but one of the most dangerous in the world unbelievably. Many lives have been taken on this and surrounding peaks due to the particularly harsh weather conditions that change dramatically in a very short time. This range sits in area of convergence of 3 weather making air masses and when they come together it’s usually quite violent. Mt. Washington used to hold the world record for the highest wind speed ever recorded on earth. There are signs at tree line for all the trails that say that this area experiences some of the harshest conditions in the world and that you must be prepared for the environment or turn back now at your own peril. Many an experienced hiker has scoffed at those signs because they’ve scaled much higher peaks and have unfortunately lost their lives. Very challenging hikes to say the least but incredibly rewarding and fun. 🙂
@FablesandFells

Ahh of course. Thanks for that. Oh that's very sad. Unfortunately that happens over here too, particularly Scottish peaks in Winter. There doesn't need to be a great height to have some truly harsh conditions.

Hi Chloe. I came across your channel for the first time and really enjoyed the quality of your video both visually as well as content wise. Living here in Canada, we also have wonderful and spectacular geography and sights to see during our drastically different seasons from minus 35C to positive 40C from winter to summer with Fall and Spring also being quite distinctive. Your aerial coverage with drone footage is most amazing and grips the mood and atmosphere of the place. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Cheers.

Just found your channel - lovely video and Hard Knott is one of my favourite places too. The views over to Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the Scafells is the best in the Lake District. One little tip as a fellow MSR owner - the cross pole is meant to go over the main pole, not underneath it. It's a lot stronger this way as the tension is spread throughout the whole tent structure and not through the plastic clip. MSR don't really make this as clear as they should do in the instructions!

Haha thanks, I know it's a specific way but usually zone out and forget. I tend to pick very low/no wind nights but will do my best to remember that for future pitches 🙏

Wonderful video. I don’t know if it would help but maybe score yourself an Infrared Monocular for those overnight stays. A quick sweep of the landscape might give you peace of mind when your dog feels unsettled. (Edit) I noted other comments as well about IR. Sorry I should have read those first.

Very scenic. The upshot in jolly old England is there's no apex predators to deal with. Nothing wild out there can hurt or eat you.

Hi Chloe, just discovered your channel, beautiful video and spectacular scenery! I watch a few channels that feature these areas (hiking/camping and motorcycling) and I can't believe the beauty of the place. As I'm stuck at home with a back injury ATM I guess it would be irresponsible of me not to binge and catch up on your travels 😊 Greetings from Melbourne, Australia...

Good to have "Old faithful" with you I bet... I'd,ve been thinkin' about all the roman soldiers and what they went through there.. I don't scare easily but I may not have camped there (Scaredy cat!!). Great vid.. I've been.. Come up the pass and ended up swimming in Wastwater on hottest day 2022. Magic.. Look forward to your next one.. : )

I love the views from hardknott. Last time I was up there I was doing the 3 peaks challenge and I rode my bicycle between each mountain. Hardknott nearly broke me in the night, but I knew it wasn’t too horrific from there to wasdale. Great video 🫵🏻👌🏻⛺️

Hi Chloe, really enjoyed your vlog, as a fellow Cumbrian " immigrant " may I just say, I am so proud of you for showing how a responsible dog owner should behave when on the fells, Cam is lucky to have you, as you are him, some vloggers fail to recognise that these beautiful fells are and have been for centuries the place where many families make their livelihoods, largely through the raising of sheep, predominately the native Herdwick, who live wild and free for most of the year on our beloved fells, Sheepdogs are some of the most intelligent breeds, they have helped livestock farmers for centuries, because like all carnivores their D.N.A. their natural instincts are those of a predator, note to potential reckless dog owners on the fells :- ( that's how they scare the sheep into doing what the shepherd or farmer needs them to do ) domesticated they are, but globally many dogs are shot and killed every year for " worrying " sheep. it was brilliant to see you restrain him when needed, but let him be free when safe to do so, even the sight of a dog in " their home " can mean carnage for a pregnant ewe or newly born lamb, soz, Chloe, on a brighter note, beautiful photography, editing, dialogue and presentation, BRAVO ! Bon chance ! an illustration of what can happen, www.nwemail.co.uk/news/19987680.cumbria-police-reminds-dog-owners-consequences-sheep-worrying/

Thanks ~ yes, it's very sad how many sheep are killed or injured by dogs every year or the dog's go missing because they've ran off chasing something. Never worth it, and I say that as a spaniel owner (aka not a dog best suited to walking on a lead 😅).
