At 44 years old I have finally picked up an ARC/Stick welder. This evening I welded two brackets together, I then filled in the holes in the brackets. My welds were awful but I am over the moon. It's 23:00 and I just want to go out and weld something else. Thank you for inspiring me.

My first apprentice trial at 16yo was "glass cutter-glazier", I was sent to the store for a "long weight". Paul, I gave Rory this piece of advice about a week or 10 days ago... It's always worked very well for me... When welding aluminum use a pure tungsten electrode and pure helium for shielding gas... A 2% electrode and argon are fine for steel and will work on aluminum but the pure tungsten and helium combo is night and day difference for easy of welding and puddle control...
@dalegnodle
@dalegnodle 2 жыл бұрын
I knew about the tungsten but didn't know the Helium was better. We used to run helium for backing gas on heavy wall pipe when we wanted it to rise, as opposed to Argon which sinks. The one thing I always recommend is to keep your workpiece clean. Aluminum forms an oxide very quickly that melts at almost 5,000 degrees, whereas aluminum melts around 1350. You can see why it's critical to clean the oxide off!

Linde Corp introduced Heli-Arc welding to the world and that is their name for the process. Same outfit introduced MIG welding. I use helium for welding aluminum whether TIG or MIG. I'm retired since 2015 from fabricating but still have a bottle of helium.

After drilling your pilot holes for a tap, it's crucial to countersink the hole before tapping. This prevents the material from fragmenting as you start the tap causing it to bind which creates the need for more torque. Then you break the tap. Also, never tap dry.

"PIncher skills" : For all of my 60 + years that tool has been "the bat skruncher". At our camp in Maine, back in time, bats were plentiful and often would get inside and upset my Mom. She hated bats. Us boys, (4 of us) all learned to quickly pick up and take outside said bat with the bat skruncher (mechanics helper/reacher/grabber/pick up tool) from the work shop. Bats eat mosquitos and Maine has a few of those so they were our friends. Bats are protected now in Maine.

They used to call them Dayton Wheels. The old guy I learned to drive semi's from was stopped at an intersection in a small Kansas town back in the mid-50's. The ring on his right front wheel blew off, barely missing a pedestrian and it knocked a chunk out of the marble corner of the bank next to him. He thought sure he'd killed the lady. She just collapsed on the sidewalk. When she stopped trembling, she was ok but it sure scared everyone around that intersection!

I watched that episode of Engine Masters and was thinking about it while watching you clearance the exhaust. They came to the conclusion that no matter what shape you make the tube, the flow will be the same since you are not shrinking the inside diameter/volume in the tube until one side touches the other side . Makes complete sense once you really think about it. I know that ever since I watched that episode, I will never have an issue with wham'n on exhaust that needs wham'n !
@DiscoFang
@DiscoFang 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think they came to the conclusion "why" that you describe, because as soon as you deform it even slightly you ARE reducing the diameter/volume. What they showed is that it didn't matter in the relatively short spot. A seminal internet video on an often argued point that seems to defy "logic" or common sense. Which is the point of science and testing.
@tobyvision
@tobyvision 2 жыл бұрын
@@DiscoFang Engine nuts have argued about this for as long as exhaust has existed. The truth is that you will feel more difference in performance based on the humidity that day than on any bend differences in any halfway sane exhaust route. If you are really worried about half a horsepower on your high performance machine, you are better off losing 5 pounds.
