Total fabric nerd here too. I learned a whole lot from this video. I have not tried to do anything with fancy fabric yet. I have some that I brought back from India that I need to do something with. I loved working in a textile mill. We did upholstery and awning fabric. Most of it was plain weave but we did some twills and fancier weaves. Also, you and my wife have the same taste in movies. She loves all the old musicals.

I love this idea! Fabric, and all the many many types, has confused me since I started sewing. Seeing the long list of names on the back of patterns and struggling to match them to fabric in the store gave me headaches! Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge.

So, "woof" is related to the word "weave" - and so is "weft" (from "weaved"). I don't know the exact details, but I expect they passed down to us through different dialects of Middle English. That would explain why their vowels are so different.
