Hello folks coming in for 1.21 - please note that this series was created with 1.20 in mind. While you can follow _some_ steps, others might not work 1-to-1 in 1.21, because of a lot of changes! 1.21 Courses and Tutorials are already in the works, but will take a while to complete. For the time being, I suggest with sticking with 1.20 or 1.20.1 or deepening your java knowledge to be ready for the 1.21 courses or tutorials :)

If your IntelliJ window looks significantly different, with all sorts of buttons missing. I found that in File, Settings, Apperance & Behaviour, New UI, there is a checkbox right at the top labeled "Enable new UI". If this is checked, uncheck it, and you should find that after a restart, your window should look a lot closer to what's shown in the video.

for those running into problems at the genSources part, try using the option in the gradle tab. Its in the same section as the runClient thing used later in the video. For me it solved the problem

Hey Kaupenjoe, for future versions of this tutorial series, maybe it would be a good idea to start by making a "template mod" in the setup video, and then at the end of the video walk through the steps to copy the template mod and turn in into the "tutorial mod" you use in this series, so we know clearly everything that has to be changed every time we want to make a new mod, and a little bit about how to use intellij, like refactoring, etc.

Well little bit of fun fact, i start modding using android studio IDE 😆 I'm a Android Apps Developer and i love using kotlin and yeah i start my minecraft modding journey with this channel and android studio using kotlin :) Note : Kotlin and java is not really different that much so it's not too hard for me to convert his java code into kotlin code

hey! im new here to watching, would it be a lot to ask for more like... explanations on *why* certain things are done? I do have a good understanding of java, a bit hazy on the syntax of classes and objects... but I just find it a tad confusing why certain things are done in certain classes, and when order matters or not... and sometimes what a line even does! Hey just wanted to say intelliJ no longer supports version 17, so just use 18 or higher, it won't make a big difference, I have been able to follow the tutorials just fine using a higher version :)

Note : Make sure to download the x64 architecture of the JDK and not the x86. Else at 11:41 the "./gradlew genSources" may throw you an error.

Was an easy thing to overlook and I just moved my project to my main PC and had the same issue. Make sure you run the x86 exe again to remove the 86 bit first, then install the x64 bit. Then you can re-build the project using the gradle section on the right in the tasks to build right click to run build. Then type it into the terminal.

If you are thrown (can't find gradle) at the command "./gradlew genSources", you may have selected one or more folders before the "Fabric-Tutorial-1.20.X" below. Which must be selected and must be selected as the top folder. Hope it helps and just do everything exactly as described, not like me ;D

Only the setup episode and I'm already learning a lot! Was previously using a clunky Intellij plugin to set up my Fabric mods not knowing Fabric had an official project generator. I am wondering though, are there any specific reasons you told people to turn off "Split client and common sources"? It doesn't seem to affect anything besides the way the source code is structured (actually really prefer the way it does it) Also, with the newest version of the Fabric project generator you don't appear to have to replace any default mod ID stuff since they appear to have changed everything to contain your mod ID instead of "ExampleMod" by default, very neat!

Note: Not deleting the icon can for some reason cause issues later on. If you forget to delete icon.png and you've already built your project, just run Clear and delete the png then run Build again.. should work just fine after that!

Hm, there is a way to set the JAVA_HOME and its PATH in the system settings, I did it while trying to fix another issue I had, I followed an online guide to do it, remember to restart the PC to apply the changes afterwards

same for me. i had an outdated intellij version and updating it didnt seem to remove the old one so it might not be the case for you but i uninstalled and reinstalled. then i installed/repaired the adoptium JDK and restarted my computer. i had JDK 21 in project settings and gradle options so i used that. just finished everything in this video no problem

I am sorry, but could you explain why should i use 17 jdk? Why not the last version, for example 20? and why temurin?

Minecraft uses jdk 17, while you can try and use newer ones it _might_ lead to issues, but doesn't have to, just removes an additional thing that could lead to issues. The reason I suggest openjdk is because I have never had an issue with. Sometimes Oracle or the Amazon JDKs can have weird freaking issues :)

those that have issues with opening minecraft with java version 17, never versions of fabric REQUIRE the latest java version so instead of choosing 17 everywhere, choose 21 instead. EDIT: a good rule of thumb is going by what the fabric preset says (the ">=21") for future versions. its given directly by fabric itself and should work as literally intended

IDK if you still check comments like this but despite following everything the same but I cannot see a file equivalent to the tutorial Mod package you mention at 10:20, I can see my name as a file, then Mixin, then it goes to the mod classes already made, is there something I missed? Ive reenabled and then disabled the tree view changes again and looked through other parts i missed but i cannot see anything. Am I just blind to something obvious?

Edit: I fiddled around, and I managed to somehow get the stuff on Github, and am able to push stuff consistently (for now). Not sure why everything looks different on my end compared to everyone else, but oh well... I'm not sure what I did wrong on the Github part and I'm freaking out. I did everything up to the "Share By:" part where I set up my account, but when I click share it didnt give me a menu to select anything to push. So I starting looking around and I end up getting to the commit/push point, but it asks me what my git "user.name" and "user.email" is. I had no idea what that was, and I ended up pushing it there anyway. Well now its in the git menu, wherever and whatever "Git" is, and I see not a grain of infomation anywhere on how the heck im supposed to get it on Github??? And it seems to have replaced that VCS button with "Git" too. It feels like a nightmare that will never end...

I had this issue too, but it got fixed when I did the gradle download step again, and then rebooted my computor. The uses of the minecraftserver class jumped up to 124 from 2. Also, if middle clicking specifically is your issue, there is a triple dot option menu next to all the classes, and you can search for the class manually there. Hope this helped!

CopyPaste this exact command in the terminal under the local tab: ./gradlew genSources if it doesnt work first run ./gradlew tasks and then scroll to the top and look if it suggests genSources and if it does run ./gradlew genSources again

@@semydev For other people that tried this method, but it didn't solve the problem, write ./gradlew --stop , wait for the work to be done and then write again ./gradlew genSources

Hey there. Love your tutorials man. If you have time, I got a problem. Coming from your Java Tutorial series, I used the Java 16 jdk you used, but now, with the modding series, every time the project begins to build (4:37), it gets an error saying that I need to update to at least Java 17 jdk. I've tried downloading new jdks, messing the the Java_Home variable, I am at my wits end and I haven't even started the series yet lol. If you see this and have the energy, I could use some help.

Hi, firsrt of all amazing tutorial. When I try to do the runclient thing it comes up with two errors and hasnt stopped loading after 7 minutes (everything else built within 2 mins). Is there any solution to this problem?
