i use grow bags too and i learned a lot the 1st year. i learned to put something in the bottom to keep the water & nutrients from running out when watering or during storms. my family consumes a lot of cultured milk products, yogurt, cottage cheese, dips, etc, so i usually have plenty of various size containers to put in the bottom of my grow bags. i also use coco coir in my soil for my grow bags for wicking & retention. the containers at the bottom of my bags retain the water & nutrients to make available for the plants later. i have even entertained the notion of using disposable pizza pans, disposable dutch oven liners, round cake pans, etc. i have even thought about taking my idea and experimenting with a self-wicking setup. standing water hasn't become a problem for me as of yet and i'm about 5 yrs in and with storms that could easily be called gully washers. my hoa won't let me use any kind of tub utility to set the bags in on the ground because of mosquitos - west nile is very prevalent here - but i could build raised beds as long as they aren't visible from the street and put liners in it for a tub utility as long as it isn't on the ground. my bags are working well so i'm going to leave that project for a future planting season.

That's really sound advice, also forgive the message so long after your original comment, I live in Ireland and the ground is petty often wet and it does rain a lot here 😅 would the bag sitting on a dampish lawn be sufficient? Or does it really want that constant standing water. Cheers 👍

Thanks for addressing the grow bags in a video! I live in a zone 7b with very high humidity. So while someone from California may have drying issues...for me here in Southern Virginia in swampy regions, it seems it may be helpful for me to switch. Bottom rot, powdery mildow, wet roots and other fungus growth take out my crops consistently. This might not be the answer for my fruit trees..but its bound to improve my odds on squash, tomatoes and raspberries. Thanks again for the video!

I agree. It's hard to find the right climate for these.
@Vosia713 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's exactly why I grabbed these. I live in central Texas and it's extremely humid and decently hot out. I just lot two tomatoes due to root rot on the bottom. The top half would just dry out rapidly due to the heat requiring water but the bottom would rot. Hopefully this solves it.
@TheRealFourFifths2 жыл бұрын
Perfect in Virginia defeats root rot and all molds for the most part super sweaty humidity isnt an issue with these these breath very well also great for growing flowers and pot in pots 😂 tomatoes use to be destroyed but now no issues also have a greenhouse and my papayas are booming in these bags
@Randi-h5q2 жыл бұрын
I would agree too. It would depend a lot on the plant, bag size, soil type and climate. For me, I live in the tropics where it rains 40% of the year, so these grow bags help in preventing too much moisture retention of my Mediterranean herb garden. Heavy mulching can also mitigate some of the excessive drying out issues too.
@jeas49802 жыл бұрын
Been 4 years... I now have over 50 grow bags of various sizes. They hold up really well. I try not to move them too often because they can cause air gaps and root die off stunting growth. They can still promote molds and mildew if their isn't proper airflow around the bags (grouping too closely). But I've really come to love their affordability and versatility and (surprisingly) their longevity!

I plant my tomatoes and peas in 20 or 25 gallon grow bags. I put the pots inside cement mixing tubs that I got from home depot for $6 or $7. Then I can keep a couple inches of water in the tub so the plants don't dry out in the summer. This has worked great. I've also used a kiddie pool, but I like the cement mixing tubs better because I can keep them in a nice row on the side of my house. They fit perfectly in that flower bed and last much longer than a kiddie pool. I did add vermiculite to the pots to help retain moisture too. Lovely trees! I've been wondering if I could grow trees in the grow bags. Thanks for answering that question.

The main two benefits of using fabric grow bags are air pruning the roots and wicking water. As you don’t have a wicking system setup, you aren’t benefitting from the constant moisture content. Ideally you need to buy loads of shallow trays and sit the bags in those trays and keep watering the trays. As you have a drip irrigation system going, you can amend your drip irrigation to maintain a minimum water level in the trays. Trays is just one method for fabric grow bag water wicking. As you have a drip irrigation from the top, you are top watering so the roots will stay near the top searching for water. If you use wicking from the bottom, you will have a mass of roots from the bottom up and all around the edges as the fabric will be moist and the bottom half of the soil mix will be moist. I sit my fabric bags in trays which I manually water or allow rain to replenish the water. Whenever I’ve transplanted from a fabric grow bag I’ve never seen a plant WITHOUT an impressive root mass. Get water wicking going from the bottom up and you’ll see a massive difference.

Apparently lining the bottom of large fabric pots with 2 or 3 cm of coco coir helps with the drying-out issues. High coco coir content in the soil may also help.

Try putting the grow bags into a shallow tray or a kiddie pool filled with 3" of water. If the bottom of the bag is sitting in 2"- 3" of water (at all times) then it will allow the plant a constant water supply and the plant will take water when it needs it. That will in turn encourage deeper root system and air prune correctly. Grow bags are wonderful if you use them correctly. You have a great drip system set up for plastic/cement/clay/resin pots, but it's the worst set up for grow bags.

There is always the possibility to put an extra (kitchen) foil or big plastic bag inside this plant bag and make some draining holes. For big high (square) plant bags I also start with cardboard inside, folded against the sides to give some more support and structure so you could also wrap some non-toxic (food quality) foil around cardboard to give support and reduction of evaporation. It is also not necessary to cover the whole inside surface but for instance only half to 2/3. The bottom should be left free to ensure a minimum of drainage. OK, all the best.

You can wrap some plastic or maybe a more eco friendly (but water proof) material around the bags so the pots don't dry out on hot days after watering. When it rains, you can just remove the wrapping so the water has somewhere to go. I'm thinking of making a few wraps with ties. I'm experiencing something very strange right now though which is that the soil in my plastic pot is drying out faster than the soil in my fabric pots but I think it's because the roots are not being pruned in the plastic pot and the tomato plant is just drinking more water than the ones in the fabric pots.

@@grover9187 yeah most of these above ground growing ideas just use too much water in these hyper arid desert climates. I'm staying with inground. Initially tilling up the first 12 to 16 in, then going with core gardening and Hugo culture combined, along with the jadam system and cover crops for biomass. Focusing on growing healthy soil and reaping the benefits of that. With the core and Hugo culture combo, if you keep the core rows tight together, criss cross them each season, fill them with the biomass from your cover crops and do that for 2 to 3 seasons, and then sprinkle a couple inches of compost, manure and some native soil on top of those cores, along with some activated biochar and gypsum to leech out the alkalize and salts and neutralize the pH, use the jadam system to increase the indigenous microorganisms, or imo's, and feed it with fermented plant juices, or fpjs, once you've done this two to three layers thick you'll have in effect created a large moisture sponge that will be held together by a large root mass created by the cover crops roots and indigenous microorganisms, as well as with the biomass in each of the cores. This will last much longer, for decades, with very little input each year once it's been completed, with mostly nothing but local resources. It's just a matter of having the patience and taking the time to do it right.

The grow bags will use way less water and won't dry out if you put them inside a slightly larger plastic pot or 55 gal barrel cut in half, and leave about a 1/2" to 3/4" air gap between the container and grow bag. I use a few pool noodle strips cut into 3/4" strips as spacers for the gap. I then seal the top of the gap and only leave a small vent hole so air in the gap can slowly circulate but not let out too much moisture. I also put the grow bag up an spacers to make an air gap underneath inside the container so it air prunes the bottom. It's takes more effort to do it this way, but in the long run its the best way to grow trees in large pots and never have to repot them.

the millennial gardener message me that I should not put my figs in bags.he said the figs need to be root bound so that they'll produce figs and not just roots.can you tell me how your figs are doing do you get a good amount of them even though they're in grow bags.personally I really love grow bags my plants really seem to thrive in them.I'm a terrible over waterer,so the grow bags are great at drying out.what do you fertilize your figs with? Thank you

What kind of watering system are you using?
@yoyoloach246 жыл бұрын
Try using a heavier soil like a standard peat/perlite mix such as pro-mix or whatever they have at your local box stores to maintain a more consistent moisture level. This was my first year trying fig trees (purchased as rooted cuttings). I was making my own blend of bark, perlite and peat moss but got so tired of mixing the crap up by the second up-potting that I threw a couple trees in straight Pro-Mix BX. Those in the pro-mix have grow EXTREMELY fast compared to the bark mix, but may not have fruited quite as well.

@ 4:32, you say that the fabric pots will degrade and they are not plastic. That is incorrect. Most of these bags are made from polypropylene (PP) "fabric" which is a type of plastic. So their end-of-life disposal is not that eco-friendly. We should use fabric bags from manufacturers who use recycled plastic bottles if we want to go down this route. Rootpouch (no affiliation) claims to do so.

When recommending a pot color remember that the black plastic pots(standard nursery pots) are a black plastic polymer and are sprayed often with a resin that prevents UV rays from damaging the roots...never plant directly in a color plastic....it has to be black. This refers only to plastic pots.

Question from Michigan. I am planning on planting transplant Northern Red Oaks (caliper 1/4" - tap root 3"-4") in a bag system. I plan on letting them stay for a season or two in bags to develop into a sell able tree. What size bag would you recommend?
@cynb.3473 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong but i thought they were supposed to be in a container ...kitty pool, lined beds etc. So they can soak up water.

I have also seen some popular you tube gardeners say they put them directly on soil and the roots draw moisture from the ground.

You can always staple plastic bags on the outside of the fabric bags to retain moisture until you’re ready to put them in the ground.

@@jimmymisle910 the roots will grow and start to poke out the sides. The part sticking out will die when it hits the air. Hence the name air pruning. It's supposedly good.

I think success with bags is going to depend on a *lot* of factors, from soil mix to the specific plant. I'm sure you're going to want a mix that holds water very well to use in a bag, more so than the mix you might use in a plastic bucket, and perhaps certain plants just aren't suited for them. I'm thinking of using them next year for some of my hot peppers (they really hate wet feet, and here in East TN it routinely rains rather heavily for several days in a row) but I don't see any reason to use them for tomato plants that want a lot more water on a nearly continual basis, and can handle being a bit soggier. There's no one magic answer or technique that's going to be best for every application.

All I can do is give my 2 cents on the fabric pots. I grow weed and bought 12 fabric pots but only need 3-4 as I only grow a couple plants at a time. My 1 gallon plastic pots take up more room than my 5 gallon fabric pots, they fold up nicely and can be put in a drawer with ease. I would imagine fabric pots would be easy to pack and move over plastic pots. Hope this helps.

These are more for cannabis, peppers and tomatoe plants. Use trays and allow them to drain and soak up. you do not water these like regular pots.

Gotta say, I work in a garden center, and a lot of the plastic pots break on us. Regardless of brand, I often see pots with cracked or crumpled rims, or splits from the roots just getting too big and pushing out. This happens most often in the five gallon pots, just because we have more of those than anything else, but also in those huge thirty-gallons, and that is so. much. fun. So, concern about the fabric pots ripping, especially when I've seen them hold up so well, kind of makes me roll my eyes a bit. Besides, fabric normally rips along warp or weft, which many fabric pots don't even have...
