So here is a suggestion on how to reuse the soil. In the fall when your summer plants are dying/gone go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and get a big storage container. Then put all the dirt in them and mix in some dead leaves, grass clippings, and food scrapes. Keep moist and you will have renewed soil for next year!

That’s what I did last year. I stuffed all the leaves from the garden clean up late fall into a bin with used potting soil and then I added compost microbes from Lowe’s and I was shocked at the beautiful soil I have waiting to plant this year.

A cheap plastic kid's pool is a great way to water growbeds from underneath. Letting water wick up keeps the surface dry so less weeds can germinate. Put a hole in the pool about 3" from the bottom so it can't get too full from the rain. Put a mosquito dunk in the water to kill the larvae. You can leave your plants much longer that way than watering with a hose. One pool fits a lot of bags, depending on the sizes used.

I have my grow bags on plant stands with casters... (the round plant stands that they sell at Lowes/HD), I find them easier to move. They are also easy/inexpensive to make, which I eventually did the more bags I bought. The plant stands at the store are not inexpensive so by making them I saved some money and instead put those savings towards more seeds/soil ect. We had an extra cedar fence panel that didn't get used so I took the panels apart and cut them into 12x12 and build a plant stand and added casters... they turned out nice. Now I know how to make them for anything that I need help with moving. All it cost me where the $10.00 casters., and that was because I went with the expensive casters.. which honestly is not necessary. Also if you aren't good with tools you can find real good wooden cutting boards at the thrift stores for around $2.00, all you have to do is screw the casters and call it a day (those I would seal properly so they last longer). And that's how I move my bags or heavy ceramic pots... or anything heavy that I can't move alone... even furniture 😅

I've been growing in fabric pots for over ten years. Never really thought of combining vermiculite with with a fabric grow pot. Heard a lot negative things about to much water retention with vermiculite in traditional plastic pots. Makes a lot of sense in a fabric pot situation. Thank you for the great information.

I’m in central NC. Just starting a small victory garden. We have a great area with morning sun and late afternoon shade in the front yard, but with this being my first time gardening, I wasn’t ready to tackle amending the very root filled, clay based soil. Opted for containers and grow bags. Just got 12 fifteen gallon bags yesterday! I’m happy to hear that the “cons” for using grow bags are fairly minimal. This was very helpful. Thank you!!

Probably more frequently than the requirements on the fertilizer box?
@GrowingInTheGarden

Exactly. I didn't go into fertilizing but plants in containers need more frequent fertilizer than those in the ground for sure. I would feed lightly more often - applying less than recommended but more often than recommended, if that makes sense.

Hi Angela! Thank you for putting up quality videos with such good/concise info! I’m in chandler and we just got done upgrading our garden beds, I’m having your soil mix from the worm farm delivered in 2 days-yay!!! And my garden grids should be here in a few weeks. I have a few questions since I’m trying to copy everything you do so I have a better chance to get results like yours (I probably will only get to 1/10 of your success once you add in my human error 😂)...I have a few questions. First, I know in the summer shade cloth is absolutely necessary, but are you using any shade cloth right now? Once my plants are hardened, it feels like the sun is eating away the leaves. I give them morning sun and around noon I put them in the shade. Should I just leave them out all day, but with shade cloth? And lastly, I’ll be transplanting my plants before the garden grids arrive. Am I able to put them together once they’re in the bed? I know they’re easy to install and possibly already put together...? Is it adjustable if needed-for example taking an entire square out myself. Thank you so much for all the info you put out! You have no idea how much I appreciate watching someone that’s in Phoenix and knows our hot/dry weather!!
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have any shade up now. Don't be afraid of the sun, but let your transplants adjust slowly. Focus on good soil and watering and the plants will be happy. I'm working on a shade video soon that will give more detail about shade, so hopefully that will help. The grids come mostly assembled you can put them down around existing plants - this early in the season hopefully the plants are small. Best of luck to you and thanks for your support.

I had the opposite experience with grow bags and soil. I found that the bottom of them stayed soggy and wet and then I ended up with some root rot, ect. I had to put cinderblocks underneath so that they were off the ground and could drain. If just set on the ground how frequently should you water because my 2X a week was too much but in our summers I imagine it can vary. Also probably varries by plant. I want to like these but just haven't had a good experience. Maybe I'll try trees in them. How often do you water them

I use grow bags but watering is a challange, when i water from top , the water has tendency to flow out from grow bags walls and it does not reach to the bottom portion of soil at all , i have limitations of space hence i use grow bags of size 9 inch or 10 inch Dia with a depth of 12 inch Can you please suggest what will work best for watering in grow bags ?

Great video! Thank you! Quick question. Is it possible to sew the grow bags out of cotton canvas or do you think cotton will rot? Grow bags are pricy in my area so i thought to make them myself.

You can always try - they will probably rot eventually, but you may get a season or two out of them depending on the fabric.

Thank you so much for sharing all of this wonderful and helpful information. I am now a fan would you please recommend a brand of good potting soil. I’m new I’m kind of new to this. Usually I just get some soil, throw in some seeds and that’s it. But if I can learn a better way then I’m in. Thank you so much 🌸🌹💐🍆🥦🥒

I am starting my first vegetable garden, I am planing to try growing in an Ikea bag on my roof balcony, should I poke holes in the bottom of the bag for drainage? Should I put something in the bottom of my bag to protect the floor from the drained water?

The water should drain out of the bag without holes. You may need to put the bags in something if you don't want to damage the floor. If it collects water, empty it. You don't want the bags standing in standing water.

Sally Merrill. I know how to make them but what fabric do you use that lets air and water travel through the sides of the bag? Do you include drain holes in the bottom?

@@jainemiller2375 Jaine, I use cotton fabric from my stash that I've had. I cut 2 squares about 14 inches square, sew the 2 sides and the bottom and leave the top open to put the soil and plant(s) in and it's ready to go. The cotton fabric already has thousands of tiny holes so I do not make any holes for the water to go through. For the handles I cut strips about 3 inches wide and 12 inches long and sew them to the tops of the bag. Hope this helps.
