I started in November to use up my new scraps in bonus blocks. I sew them into scrappy blocks as soon as done with quilt top. I already have 40-50 bonus blocks to make a scrappy quilt. Goal to keep this up going forward.

@@ThelittleGreenBeanI believe the boxes you used for jelly roll storage are meant to store baseball cards - which means I probably have some in my basement with my son’s stuff. Could you provide measurements for some of the bins you used? I know many are not available but measurements would give us a starting point.

I just found you on KZbin and as a new quilter I love this first video. I just watched. Your ideas and suggestions for fabric storage are wonderful and I will research containers I am interested, however in the cabinets that that make up your mini fabric store. Are those IKEA or did you get them from somewhere else?

I originally stored my fabric on comic board strips but found out that I am a project sewer. So when I find fabric I love, I find a pattern, then purchase what I need for that project plus a little extra for matching pillows, then it all goes in a Sterilite container that is labeled with the fabric line and pattern. If I don’t have a project for fabric I love I do the same thing as you. My leftovers are then usually cut to 5 inch squares or 2 x 3 1/2 pieces for crumb busting blocks.

Great video! I store my fabric the same way - except I did use the 8X10 magazine boards (expensive!!!) and a zip lock bag to make the fabric slide easier in my clear boxes and pritect against dust (my son rents an apartment on our basement right next to my sewing studio (four cats) dust is an issue. The bags around my fabric boards is so helpful! (I may switch to foam board! Please show hoe you cut precisely - I didn't like cutting foam board on the past!) But - I would really like to get my fabric boards on shelves where I can see them! I LOVE your little personal fabric "store!" display! It makes me happy to see them color coded! Great video! Love the stackable clear trays too! This was well worth the time spent to watch and enjoy! Thanks!

This is wonderful!!!!! I have some great 12x12 lidded bins that I got from Costco. I have other ones that are drawer style, but still with lids, that I got from a craft store ages ago. Also, I had a thought for people who are hidden organizers. (I personally LOVE have all the pretties right out where I can see them all the time, but I know not everyone does) You can utilize all these methods shown in this video but store them in solid door cabinet or big drawers (I'm thinking those mini bolts in big file drawers or something!)

Very intrigued by the foam board storage. Especially the ability to pop in a pin. Definitely need to source a sale for it though because it can be pricey. Now as for the jelly roll storage…not a fan. Clever, yet seems quite time consuming. Although rifling through the strips is time consuming too! 😂 More research needed 😉

I’m new to sewing and I’m washing my fabric before I store it. I’m guessing you wash yours before you sew with it? I was just gifted these small squares…think they are called fat quarters and I’m planning on washing them tomorrow and was hoping they don’t frey…will they? Should I be washing the fabric first? Your sewing room is amazing…really well done!
@hollywaddell6727
@hollywaddell6727 10 күн бұрын
If you put your fabric through a regular washing machine cycle, it will fray. The smaller the piece of fabric, the greater the overall loss of usable fabric will be. I am a “pre-washer” but I will not bother trying to pre-wash anything smaller than a fat quarter, too much fabric disappears because of the fraying. I have a serger (an overlocker will do the same) on which I serge two fat quarters together all around the three raw edges before putting them in the wash. For half-yard cuts, I serge two pieces together along the two long raw edges before putting them in the wash. Larger cuts of yardage are managed similarly, depending on how big they are. If a serger is not available, you can finish the raw edges of the fabric with a zig-zag stitch. If your machine only has a straight stitch, put a line of stitching at least 1/4 inch to as much as 3/8 inch in from the raw edges to help stabilize them from fraying. If I have a piece of goods more than a yard long, I will snip the corners off at an angle (where the raw cut edge and selvage meets), throw it in the wash and hope for the best. Sometimes there is a lot of tangled thread that frays off, sometimes hardly any. Welcome to the world of sewing and quilting. There are great channels on KZbin to help us learn. I have sewn garments for about 60 years, but trying my hand at quilting only for about 7 years. Thank goodness for those YT channels.
@loveittoday
@loveittoday 9 күн бұрын
You’ll regret it dearly if you prewash a jelly roll, charm square, mini charm, or layer cake. They will all fray and be a nightmare to organize. I’m not a pre-washer of anything except flannel and garment fabric. There’s always a debate about pre-washing or not, but it’s a personal preference of course. 😀 You do you as we say😂

Great ideas. The only thing i felt was too rushed was where you show how you folded the fabric onto your foam boards. To me, it looked like you had around a yard of fabric....? I know you said it didn't matter. But I couldn't tell HOW you folded it in thirds. Cut edge to cut edge.....or folded edge down to the selvage....? I guess maybe it might not matter which way it's folded, as long as it's around 9"....?

Your fabric looks very pretty. I did comic book card stock until I ran out of room. The cards had to go because they were taking up too much space. Those skinny boards take up a lot of room if you have enough of them. Foam board is thicker. Just think HOW MUCH MORE FABRIC you could have . . . I kid. Don't buy more fabric, it looks lovely.

Styrofoam is NOT good to use, especially long term, as it’s not archival!!! Meaning over time the material touching the styrofoam will start to turn yellow and fall apart. Comic books boards are archival, so they are safe to use. (Note: Purchased from a reputable source to ensure they are archival).
