Fabricating a 3" Maf for the Volvo 940 Drift Project
Part 2
Welcome back to our channel! In this video we will be making a 3 inch maf pipe to allow more air into the turbo for our volvo 940 turbo drift project, We have got some milling and ally tig welding to get this fabricated.

I find this very satisfying. Probably because I always wanted to be able to fab stuff like this. Thanks for sharing!

Just to note, with Bosch LH, you cannot just go fitting a larger intake pipe. Since you have now enlarged the total volume of the air intake system. So the programmed values in the ECU are no longer applicable. Consequently it will run like crap. I know, ive been through this pain with LH and had to revert back to stock piping. Problem is, no one is able to remap LH anymore, or at least i could not find anyone. So if aiming for more power then you need to look at aftermarket ECU systems. Or in my case i fitted Saab Trionic 5, which is now opensource with T5Suite and you can map away to your hearts content....

Hi i can see what you're saying, that is interesting, the car seem to be running fine and not to different to the original stock pipe but we are still experimenting at the moment...i will bear that in mind if we get any running issues, thanks for the info!

@@usherengineering179 in sweden we have a online store called Kl racing, they have Chips for volvos LH2.4 pre tuned for 3"lmm, 19t or similar and 465cc injectors, both fuel and ignition for the very low price of 150£. there is also BSR that have kits but way more expensive. vikingship and timos moto is no longer available i think

Came here to post this, the ECU needs a different tune to use the 3" MAF correctly but there are loads of people capable of remapping the LH2.4 ECUs, all you need is chipburner or an Ostrich chip emulator if you want to do it real fancy like. There is also alot of readily available info on the LH system, MAP dumps from nearly every version and I'm pretty sure I found the MAF curve for the 3" MAF somewhere (early 960 with the 3.0 engines came with LH and 3" MAFs stock, presumably it was dumped from one of those) so technically you could just get a MAP dump for the version you have along with the correct XDF for tunerpro, overwrite the stock MAF curve with the 3" one and then burn the chip. But as MrVein already mentioned, there are also ready chips available that come preconfigured for use with bigger MAF, injectors and turbo, these usually also come with a retuned ignition as the stock one likes to knock on higher boost levels, seen these type of chips available on ebay and alot of swedish sites. Another tip that's MAF related, when upgrading the turbo, try to make the new intake pipe from the MAF to the turbo inlet roughly the same length and have it turn approx. 90degress just like the stock one, these MAFs are pretty sensitive to turbulence from the compressor wheel and atleast on my 940 where I had only a 45deg bend between the MAF and turbo, I got horrible idle for a few seconds after every pull, sometimes the car would just stall directly after lifting my foot of the pedal. This was remedied by putting a 90deg silicone bend inplace of the 45deg one. Also love the fab work, it's really interesting to see how others solve these things as I have made quite a few of these myself but went about it pretty differently.

@@usherengineering179 Just get an Moates Ostrich and you can do it yourself, even with live tuneability. I run 2bars boost on ethanol fuel with 3" MAF and 1000cc injectors with the ostrich on original LH2.4. No problem for over 100.000km (related to this :-P) www.moates.net/ostrich-20-the-new-breed-p-169.html and forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=227153

That was my first thought too. The diameter of the MAF is a fixed value for the ECU. If this is changed, the software must be remapped so the car knows again how much air its getting. Otherwise it could run too lean and the engine could be damaged.

Would love to be able to fabricate to that level. Half the battle is having the brain to figure out the best way to do it😂. Engineering skills are rare in the UK so it's great to see people with an interest 👍

nice i like this! I actually done the same operation, this was way more serious than the one i did tho, i literally just cut a hole in a 3" pipe and glued the MAF guts straight to it. Looked like shit but worked fine, this was together with bigger turbo and IC, Bosch 044 pump, bigger injectors and other fuel and ignition MAP.

Did you alter the computer in any way to do this? The sensor now thinks there's the same amount of air passing through, but the pipe is much bigger, so in reality, much more air is coming in..
