Perhaps the most important video for people like me who have very sensitive skin. The only way to avoid razor burn is to have just a single wtg pass with least amount of pressure applied.
@handsomedevil70722 ай бұрын
Yes mate, it took me years to master this starting from puberty. In some areas hair direction changes so sharp for me. And they grow almost parallel to my skin and my beard is curly. I used to have "trouble spots" but it turned out growth direction was asymetrical and I was going across the grain. I use a really agrassive razor now if I want a close shave. Do 1 pass and pickups if needed, thats it.

Mapping is the way to go. I used to work so hard for that BBS but now… whatever… lol… I go with a single pass and some buffing. Once I locked in my best razor/blade combo I get a great one pass shave with no irritation. If I’m feeling saucy I’ll go a second pass but that’s a rare thing these days.

I'm glad you made this video, Geo. I know I had suggested grain mapping a while back, but you had responded to me just saying simple ways that I could do this. Afterwards, I found a few other videos and eventually took close-up pictures of different sections of my face and used a diagram to map the sections out, feeling around my hair and also using cotton balls around my face when I had a significant beard growth. (Cotton balls help a ton but are very messy; with the grain on your face, the cotton doesn't split easily and just glides across your face, but against the grain, the cotton ball peels all on your face and can make a big mess, lol.) From there, I used the diagram and shaved bit by bit until I got through my first shave. And then I just repeated it over and over and over for each shave afterwards, and finally committed my new routine to memory. Now my shaves are much better and I get very, very smooth each time I shave now. 😉

Thanks for commenting. You are so right, I forgot about cotton balls. They do work better than the tissue. Thanks for requesting this. It has been asked for a few times. Glad I got it done.

Makes total sense. I do 3 passes above the jawline and 2 passes below the jawline. This avoids irritation on my neck. Many shavers will find that across the grain on your neck causes more irritation than against the grain. That has been my experience. So below the jawline, I only do WTG and ATG. No beard mapping for this cowboy although it is a great idea for some.
@geofatboy Жыл бұрын
Sounds good Robert. Thanks for sharing your technique.

It was this technique that caused me to understand that against the grain underneath my chin and on my neck is from my right ear to my left ear. It's completely bizarre everything else like on my cheeks and above my jawline is relatively normal.

Great video Geo! Bottom line I have found over time (30 years shaving) is that it’s necessary to know your beard growth. Use good, hydrated shave cream and a mild razor with good blade and NEVER shave against the grain. Always WTG AND ACROSS. All irritation, if technique is good, is done by AGAINST the grain shaving. CHEERS

Same, the hairs near my Adams's apple grow on a really weird angle so it's impossible to cut them fully (with either a safety razor, shavette, or electric razor), so I just do a couple of passes and leave like that. Getting nicks and irritation is not worth it for me, at least on my neck.
@booty121212 Жыл бұрын
I would not worry only cause if it causes so much irritation then it’s not worth getting that area cut so smooth

I bet this video will help to get easier shave because I always check each customer 's grain which way grows before shaving as a professional barber. Lathering means checking the direction, skin trouble, moles or scars if the customer has. I usually write down not to forget like a medical record for each. I know there is no same way what direction each beard grows. I can't stop check your video.

When you replace the razor blade and slide it into the fixed position on the body, it is safer to use your own fingernail. I always do that way. Never get a cut✌️
