Face Masks Myths Debunked - Masks Stop You Breathing
Do Face Masks Cause Problems Breathing? This is currently one of the biggest myths about face masks and causes many people to be shy about their use.
A lot of people think that they do and are very concerned that wearing a face mask against COVID19 might affect their breathing, I put five masks to the test in perhaps one of the most severe ways to ensure this myths debunked
The answer is NO! Face Masks are safe - And we prove it by running up a REALLY big hill wearing and oxygen probe!
Face masks do NOT reduce your oxygen levels
Wearing a mask to protect against COVID19 will not cause you to become hypoxic
The carbon dioxide you breathe out is NOT going to be stopped by wearing a face mask
HOWEVER, I've encountered a few patients who are concerned that wearing a face mask might cause problems with their breathing - concerns I entirely put down to lies from social media - Yes that's being a bit harsh, but I object to when my patients are harmed by falsehoods
SO to prove a point, I've taken five face masks - a Respro Cinqro Mask, a Cambridge Cycle Mask, A Buff, and two different surgical masks, to where during hill sprints (or runs at least)
I've been checking my Masimo O2 sats at the top of the hill, and whilst there is a lot of heavy panting, you can clearly see that my oxygenation levels are fine!
So, argument crudely settled!
