How Chemistry is Improving Face Masks to Reduce COVID19 Transmission - Dr Gill
Let's be in no doubt. The UK is currently in another lock down to reduce the case numbers of COVID19, everyone has a role to play in that by following the simple Hands, Face and Space approach.
Cleaning hands, and keeping a 2 meter distance from each other is pretty simple. Unfortunately when it comes to face masks, there is a vastly different array of masks available which can make the choice difficult for patients.
In the GP surgery, I see a huge range of masks in use. Now let me be clear, ANY MASK IS BETTER THAN NO MASK.
** Please protect others and wear a mask **
We are all familiar with the disposable 24hr mask, but there is a growing number of reusable masks coming to market.
Wise Protec has released a new mask using an existing antimicrobial technology many people are used to seeing in sports gear and shoes.
For absolute clarity, after having reviewed the independent testing - which is freely available from the company - I've opted to use their mask, and to help further development have accepted a role as a medical advisory with their company.
This video is to discuss the technology in masks generally, and how the technology in their mask may benefit people.
***** The previous upload of this video was the recipient of a take down request from KZbin, and I believe I have adjusted the video to ensure that there is 100% clarity that I fully support the wearing of face masks, and the current guidance on their use as issued by the CDC in the USA and NICE in the UK *****
We have the great news that several vaccines have shown highly positive effects, and their use will be a massive part of overcoming the pandemic that is COVID19. Between now and then we need to continue to respect and protect each other, by washing our hands, covering our faces and ensuring social distancing as possible.
Take Care

Amazing video! I'm a chemist and I'm still blown away by the things people can invent! A researcher at my university has developed a system that uses copper nanoparticles and is very effective at keeping the mask virus free. And hopefully they'll be able to start manufacturing them before Christmas 🤞

Thanks for posting this again Doc! Its been a really interesting time, I recently graduated as a biologist, and due to the outbreak, really started talking with parents about diseases and infections, to try teach and help. When buying masks, specially on hand-made mask marketing, everywhere we looked there was someone claiming scientific effectiveness and other stuff on products. It might even be true, but way the sciency stuff is spread is really shallow and dangerously so. Thanks for sharing knowledge with us, crazy to thing the ASMR meme is leading to something so good :)

And if there was a way to add on the description to let everybody know to stop touching their mask, this one you have 30 minutes, but I see a lot of people touching and adjusting and pulling on their mask where their nose is ,and then touching other things. Thanks for your help. love all your other videos also, Been watching them for some time. You and all the other nurses and doctors in the front line workers are all heroes. Well crap... you have my attention now. I sell and use Norwex masks. They use their window cloth material to make them because it had the best filtration 81%, 0.1 micron. The material contains microsilver woven into the cloth. It's been tested for filtration and microbial growth, but I hadn't thought about the potential of breathing it in. Do you really think it's that much of a possibility and an issue? I guess I'll be emailing the company a ton of questions tomorrow. They're my favorite masks too. Bias, yes. ;) And by the way, I actually enjoyed the part with the cat. It was funny how the cat stole the focus and sat there looking pensive before you chased it off. lol

so if the mask destorys the virus how would you compare it to a visor that has been given to health worker that doesnt have a chemical impregnated into it.? would it be worth investing in this type of mask to wear underneath the visor? i have masks that i wear however my son can not wear one he starts to hyperventilate after a few minuites so while i agree that masks are important , to hear a medical doctor say think of others. it stigmatises a real problem with special needs children.
@DrJamesGill

I’m sorry you’ve been having difficult with this My honest opinion is that everyone who can should wear a mask. There are very clear groups of people who genuinely can’t. One group that can’t, is those with SEVERE respiratory issues, another is those with special needs. The issue is with the people who CHOSE not to wear a mask when in public locations, as they make things exceptionally difficult for the people with absolute inability to wear them. I genuinely feel for you in this situation. The combination of a mask and a visor is preferable to merely the visor alone. But if your son is only able to wear a visor due to learning difficulties for example, then that is still better than nothing. I’m sure you are doing all you can to keep him safe. Is there any other way I can help?

Just out of interest - I recall seeing a video earlier in the year where you were talking to another doctor and said you would actually rather catch Covid-19 than flu and then I think the other doctor rather swiftly said something along the lines of you don't really want to catch either. I am paraphrasing as I haven't seen the video since then. This is not a critical comment - I'm just interested if your views have changed, and what you meant exactly? Did you know less about Covid-19 then, as most did ,and perhaps make a comment that you wouldn't stand by now? Or was there something behind what you said that you would still stand by? My flatmate sadly died due to Covid-19 in March and I was struck by the fact that the paramedics were not wearing masks and repeatedly said they were not at all concerned about the virus, in fact rather flippantly indicating that they were not wearing masks and rolling their eyes at the thought that the virus was really that serious. So I wonder if some medical professionals were complacent at the time due to lack of knowledge? Again, not a criticism, just interested.
@DrJamesGill
@DrJamesGill 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely we knew much less. We based a lot of opinions at that point about SIMILAR but crucially different viruses. But It was the best information we had to work with at the time. That video has not been taken down, as I feel it is very important to acknowledge where we have come from, and how as the science has evolved, so has our standpoints on the best options for public health Regardless of that, I’m so sorry to hear about your friend
@DrJamesGill
@DrJamesGill 3 жыл бұрын
As a scientist I HAVE to be able to re-evaluate a stand point as adjust the light of knew data. We should champion people changing their stances - when backed by data Dogmatically keeping to a viewpoint in the face of changing evidence is dangerous, and frankly causes divisions and loss of faith in the guidance of scientists and medics. I am always surprised how people can be afraid to say “I was wrong”. I’d genuinely be frightened of someone who was always right, as it would suggest a lack of self reflection

@@DrJamesGill Thank you for very much for your honest and detailed answer, which is heartening. I am very much in agreement that it is so important to re-evaluate when presented with changing evidence and I too am frightened by those who think they are always right, or bury their head in the sand when developments come to light that should by rights change their view or approach. I do think that society as a whole should work to create an atmosphere where to admit one is wrong does not mean being 'cancelled' or being forced to resign etc. I feel this fear of shame, ridicule and overt and unnecessary chastisement etc forces many to hide their mistakes, which is surely more dangerous and problematic than a culture which is more accepting and understanding. I work as a drone pilot in the film & tv industry and pilots in general (even folk like myself who fly unmanned craft) thankfully operate within a 'just culture', which encourages us to report our mistakes without fear of punishment (provided we have not acted intentionally or with gross negligence). This expands the pool of information available to the aviation industry to avoid accidents in the future. I imagine the medical profession operates in a similar way? At least I hope so.

I respect you Dr Gill and will wear a mask to protect others, but something about this pandemic doesn't sit right with me. Have you felt that way? (I'm not arguing that it doesn't exist,before anyone starts)
@DrJamesGill
@DrJamesGill 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think this could sit right. We don’t have a living memory of a similar event. Spanish flu is a nearest similarity, and that had terrible outcomes, as a result of having medical knowledge nearly 100 years behind ours. Hollywood has presented it in different ways on film, but realistically we have nothing to compare it with Given our modern world, events so far have been shocking, we are having to learn lessons during the pandemic, hence why guidelines have evolved A simple example, originally in ITU people were being nursed on their backs, but now we find a much better survival rate nursing people on their fronts due to how the virus affects the respiratory system
