Paul Stanley said that "Detroit Rock City" was one the best songs he had ever written, released in 1976, it was overshadowed by the ballad "Beth" that became a huge single that year. Paul Stanley said the lyrics were a tribute to a Kiss fan in North Carolina, who was killed in a car accident on the way to a Kiss concert. Kiss wanted to immortalize Detroit in gratitude for embracing this band from New York City with 4 guys in makeup and costumes. Everybody thought Kiss were clowns, but they blew away audiences on tour and they were playing arenas in Detroit around 1975 and the Midwest, before they even had a hit record. Also, their big double-live album "Alive!" was recorded in Detroit's Cobo Hall in '75 and that became their first major album. By 1977, the original Kiss was a global success and had become a pop culture phenomenon.

The bassist is Gene Simmons. The lead singer for this and the other sing you watched is Paul Stanley. Gene is the lead singer on many of the heavier songs like "Rock And Roll All Nite", "I Love It Loud", "Calling Dr Love", "Cold Gin", "Deuce" and "Unholy". It is really those two that run the band, the other two has been a revolving door but the two other original guys were Ace Frehley on lead guitar(best musician of the whole group) and Peter Criss on drums.

I've been a fan my whole life and to finally get to see them live was everything I needed it to be and more. This is the song they opened with and as soon as they descended from the ceiling and the first note played I started crying like a baby. When the pyrotechnics go off and that blast of heat hits you it just sends you into the stratosphere with excitement. I didn't sit once through the whole show, I just danced and danced and sang My Heart Out! Kiss is my favorite band and I'm devastated they won't tour anymore but I can at least go down in history as one of the many people who lost their mind ROCKING OUT to Detroit Rock City!!!!!!

Watching you respond to this reminded me of me when I was so little. All I wantd to do was be the drummer for Kiss back then. and tour with them. I think I manifested it because a band I was a tour manager for opened for them on a European statdium tour a few years back. It was surrea for me. THey are humbe amazing people, INCREDIBLE business minds and put on the best show a rock band could dream about. That was always their goal - the show. Little known fact about this song, while it's called "Detroit Rock City" it was actually about a car crash where I live in Charlotte NC. Kiss were playing in Detroit when Paul read about it in the newspaper and that led to this song.

Growing up the 70's I was more into classic hard rock and prog such as Zeppelin, Floyd, ELP, Queen, Aerosmith, YES, Slade, Boston, Heart, and Sabbath, etc. I had dismissed KISS as a mere cartoon rock band. But one of my younger friends owned 2 albums. One was Elton John's Greatest Hits, and the other was KISS ALIVE Vol. 2. I borrowed the latter one weekend to check them out. The first song, "Detroit Rock City" blew me away! The intense energy of the live performance got my attention right away! Its become one of my favorite "classic" rock songs. Other tunes like "Love Gun", and "I Stole Your Love" are others that I love. Then there was "Beth". I love both the studio version, and the live version. Even love the acoustic version played in their "Phantom" film. To thank my younger friend, I took him to see a KISS concert in our town in 1981. (his second concert after the Queen concert I had previously taken him). Later, I took him see a double feature, "Pink Floyd: The Wall" movie, and the "Heavy Metal" animated cartoon movie (the ultimate double bill!)

I was stationed in Cal. and on July 18, 1975, 2 of my Air Force buddies and I went to the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino,Ca to see ZZ Top, the headliner. The opening band, which none of us had ever heard of (I was a major rock- a- hoalic and saw many of the major bands perform there since 1972) was Kiss. I know my mouth was on the floor when they took the stage. Their look was amazing and when they started to play the 3 of us knew we were seeing music history. Went to the local chain record store the next day to buy their LP. The dude at the register said their FIRST LP would be in the store in 2 weeks. I have seen them many since then.

Aileen, I got into Kiss back around 1976 (I was 13), but it was a brief "affair" between me and Kiss because I also discovered Rush around the same time. I found Rush was more my "flavor" and I kind of left Kiss behind, after 1978 or so. But, more recently, I've been diving back into Kiss to check a lot of the stuff I missed. I started watching live concert videos on KZbin and there are some great ones out there, from 1977, 1996, and 1998. Great ones, where Kiss was still wearing the Kiss make up and doing their classic sets of songs. Amazing, right? BUT -- I TOTALLY slept on Kiss from the 1980's! You should check out their live concert from 1984, on their "Animalize" Tour! I am BLOWN AWAY! They own the stage from the 1st beat and they are just going nutz the whole show! But the thing that got me is watching their old drummer ERIC CARR!! I am a drummer too and I've loved all the greats, including Peter Criss, Neil Peart, Phil Collins, John Bonham and all the top guys. But I have never seen a drummer play with so much unbounded energy, precision, and passion as I have with Eric Carr! You have to see 1980's Kiss if for no other reason than to watch that kid BURN on that huge kit! Plus Paul Stanley is a FREAK on that show! It's incredible! If you are the Metal Goddess you claim to be, you owe it to yourself to check out that video and those crazy songs from the Animalize tour with Kiss! Wild!! By the way, Rest in Peace, Eric Carr, who died in 1991 (11/24/91). What a great musician! Plus, he sings will he's going wild on the drums! He was truly special. RIP!

The story behind "I was made for Loving You" is, Paul Stanley of KISS wanted to prove they could write a #1 disco song. He (they) wrote the song in about an hour and it charted #1 all over the place. Point conceded. Google: While the story is unproven, Paul Stanley, who co-wrote the song with Desmond Child and Vini Poncia, has stated that it was a conscious effort on his part to prove how easy it was to write and record a hit disco song. Also Google: Child confirms that he and Stanley wrote the verses together in an hour at SIR Studios, while the "Motown-influenced" chorus was penned by Stanley and Poncia after Child had left the studio.

Kiss have been doing their farewell tour for almost 4 years and they've played their 'final' performance in Chicago like 3 times and they'll be back soon. I felt so lucky to see then in 2019 thinking it would be the last but no...they dont sit down...60+ and still kicking. You can notice it in their vocals but its not bad

This was the song to start with. Anything but I was Made For Loving You. 😁😁 Keep playing the Kiss! Love this tune! And yeah, that bass!

The movie Detroit Rock City is one of my favourite movies of all time. A timeless classic!

If nobody has already mentioned this (and if you didn't already know) the reason KISS dressed the way they did with the face paint and everything was because the band members wanted to be able to have a life off stage without having to deal with the media and everybody and their brother asking for an autograph every time they step out their front door

The bassist with the tongue was Gene Simmons. Paul Stanley was lead vocalist on this song, though Gene Simmons sings a lot of Kiss' songs. The 1976 album "Destroyer" that this song was on is worth a deep dive.

Kiss was the first concert that I was allowed to go see with friends...and no chaperone, in 1979. Excellent show. As others here have mentioned, check out their earlier videos to get a better sense of the band and their performances.
