I quite like Travolta in Brian De Palma's Blow out. Swordfish was decent too in my opinion. I really feel like good movies just aren't made anymore. I can't think of many great films after about 2010. I mean there are a few but not as many. Everything now is just mass produced repetitive garbage, there's hardly any creative direction. @@wp912 i think theres still plenty of good cinema, but a lot more of the "mass produced garbage". Honestly? I think its too much. Everything must have a sequel or a spin off these days. I guess its how the market goes, but in my opinion, its a bit saturated. Most movies have become sort of a snack food. You eat it, throw away the wrapper, and never think of it again. And a few movies, its like going to mom's for christmas dinner and eating a nice home made meal. But i guess thats the way its always been, its just that theres a lot more movies now.

The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan, Candyman, The Terminator 2, The Fly, Being John Malkovich the list goes on. All these films were original in the sense that they often explored a subject in ways never before seen in film. The Matrix for instance to this day is still regarded as one of the best action sci fi films. But when you look at the fourth installment made recently, it is complete garbage by comparison. Films used to provide an incredible viewing experience and I can't think of anything recent that really gives the same feeling. It sort of like you said everything now is just a spin off of something else. Also I feel as though there is a heavy reliance on computer graphics rather than good character and story building. In my opinion, a good film isn't just something that looks cool it has to have a good story and characters we find interesting. Sure good computer graphics can help develop a story line but they tend to be over used and isolated from a coherent plot. I don't know, Maybe I'm just getting old. Then of course many of the greatest actors of the 80's and 90's seem to be going crazy, abusing drugs etc. its like Hollywood is rotting from the inside out and we are seeing the side effects of this through terrible movies. What the heck is going on? is Hollywood simply a reflection of society at large? Are we seeing the fall of modern civilization? I don't know. Its just crazy and sad to see some of my favorite actors fall so low in recent times. Celebrity status used to mean something. Now? I don't think so.

While Nicholas cage can, about 40% of the time, be a really great actor, I have to say...Travolta absolutely killed this role. He embodied Cage as Troy so incredibly well. The whole movie in sequence is a pretty campy, but his performance makes up for all of it. Also the explosions.
