One thing I want to point out about this campaign is the high conversion cost. An important thing to consider is Facebook is missing 20% of the results compared to Hypeddit, so the cost per conversion is roughly 20% lower. Also this was released in holiday season and overlapped Black Friday, which is the most expensive time of year to run ads. I do have other songs running at the moment that are around $0.20 per conversion, so it is still possible to get those super low results this time of year. I also do have a ToneDen campaign running with about $200 in ad spend thats rocking a $0.36/conversion cost that I only briefly mentioned in the video on screen. I'm pointing this out because obviously it didn't matter the cost per conversion was high to get great results on Spotify, because the quality was there on the Spotify for Artists side. I think the biggest opportunity for this campaign would have been trying other styles of ads, because one of my best ads for another song is a studio performance I did - I think that would have helped things out. Obviously if I dropped the cost down even more, things likely would have gone even better. But since it exploded so much on DW i'm hesitant to touch anything!

Nice video. The reason, why the campaign not performs is, because you change something in the cbo. A cbo is not optional for testing Adsets, a cbo ist optional to use winner Adsets. Try at the next time at first a Abo, if you found your winner Adsets, duplicate it in a new campaign and use a cbo. You'll see that, it will perform better.

Great info as always. Did you get your 37,000 streams by running the ads at $35 per day? If so that's about $735 for 21 days of ads. If you got 37,000 streams and spotify pays about $0.004 per stream that's about $148. do you think the new listeners will pay off in the long run to compensate for ad spend?
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't keep it at $35 through the whole campaign, I ramp down as time goes on. The big kicker here is that people listen a LOT more than once over time, and algorithmic playlists contribute even more over time. 25,000 of these streams (and increasing) are free from algorithmic playlists. I'm quite confident that if I turned off ads for this song entirely now it would have no problem surpassing 100,000 streams and thats being conservative. Its not uncommon after 6 months for my songs to have 4-5 streams per listener. Considering now this song only has about a 2.4 stream per listener metric, I can count on the stream count roughly doubling in 6 months even excluding algorithmic activity. The hope is that by the time the campaign is over it will coast and a year from now have several hundred thousand streams. Whether that justifies the cost of the entire ad campaign is a different discussion. I do have several songs that actual make money, some that break even, and others that are a total loss. If I can get a song to 250,000 streams, gain hundreds of followers on Spotify, 100 on social media, grow my retargeting audiences, gain some email list subscribers and more for $1,000 and it runs as a loss but i've made 80% of the money back so really spent $200 for all that - is that a win? To me yes, but the answer is probably different for everyone.

Hey Andrew, great video! I was wondering if it dilutes the ad if you are running the same across 3 different audiences? Or is it advantageous to split test the ad across the different audiences, then re optimize the ad for the audiences that performed poorly? Thank you for the great content by the way!
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 жыл бұрын
Its advantageous to test these ads across different audiences because you don't know which ones it will work well in. If you test 6 audiences for example its likely that 1 or 2 will perform much better than the rest, so you can turn off the bad performers and focus on the great ones. You don't have to go back in and optimize ads for audiences that go badly, you can just stop targeting those audiences that don't work. You COULD try and make new ads to appeal to them, but usually I just focus on the audiences that do work.

Hi Andrew. You show 600 to 700 Spotify streams a day for the promoted song by spending 35 $ a day on FB-ads, while your conversions cost about 0,44 $. When I divide 35$ by 0,44$ I calculate only about 80 streams a day assuming you have a 100% click through rate on your landing page. Am I missing something here? Can you elaborate? I really want to understand. The results you are showing deviate a lot from mine.
@VinylState
@VinylState 2 жыл бұрын
Yea it's weird, and 80 facebook conversions is not 80 listeners yet. +- 50% will listen for 30 seconds pulse, so that's 40 new listeners a day. Now some real new fans will listen +- 3-5 times so that's 120-200 streams by facebook ads (rough gues). I assume his other songs made more fans (chains almost 1m streams) so i gues rest of the streams comes from the already existing fans, might be release radar bump addition of 400-500 streams? I've had great success on Spotify/FB ads as a result of your videos! I have one question, and I wonder what your thoughts are. The one downside to these ads, in my opinion, is that my 'Fans Also Like' section really is subpar. It's full of artists that don't sound too much like me and are most likely also just using ads to promote their music. How can I try to get to the genre/circle of artists more similar to me?
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly even when people get fans also like through other means of promotion, organic growth, playlisting etc most artists complain that their first few fans also like artists are pretty innacurate. The only way to influence it in a guaranteed manner is to collaborate with other artists or release music under side projects and have your name in the credits. It also seems like showing up in a playlist with particular artists multiple times influences it greatly too. Mine aren't totally on point either, but aside from the ones on there that are just me under different names I can see why they're on there. Don't necessarily sound the same but I can see how we'd end up in the same persons library or playlist. I'd probably just give it more time. Mine gets tweaked every month or two.

Do you have to have a day job with those kind of streams? Like consistently producing those number can you possibly live off your music?
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 жыл бұрын
If I had my mailing list and product offer infrastructure on point maybe, but streams alone these kinds of numbers do not produce a live-able wage. I get roughly 100-120k streams per month currently, that equates to roughly $300-$350 per month from Spotify and when you include other services maybe it would be $450ish per month. I just use that money to cover my ad expenses, months I don't have a new song that covers much more than what I spend but months I have a new song it doesn't cover it all. When I hopefully get to the point where I have 1 million streams per month, that would still only be like $5k/month which is $60k/year. Subtract taxes and ad expenses that might be live-able for some people, but you'd still want to grow your mailing list and product offerings. Ideally by the time you hit 1 million streams per month there are enough die-hard fans there to move some products or join a Patreon. I know a few artists with millions of monthly streams and all of them have other stuff going on as well, like merch or membership platforms or labels they've started or touring. Its pretty common for streaming / download to be 30% of their revenue from what i've seen. Hope that helps.

What works better: direct linking of the Spotify page in the ad (link clicks) or using a landing page and a tracking pixel (as far as the landing page supports that). Does Facebook make any optimizations when e.g. a tracking pixel is used (assuming the user does not use an ad blocker)?

It would have zero chance at release radar, after 4 weeks the song can never get on it again. Discovery weekly and other algorithmic playlists are forever though, so that can still happen. Where's the best place to start with your content and do you have a course that I can follow step by step? Also my main question is this: I have an album out on Spotify. I recorded the album in 2018. I uploaded it about 2 years ago. It has very few plays as I haven't really pushed it at all. So, is it best to take it down and re-release it as singles? And treat each single to a proper release? Thanks! I'd start with one of my Facebook Ads for Music or Spotify Facebook ad playlists, then look for the most recent video on the topic and comb through older stuff when it comes up (like pixel setup etc). I do have a course on this stuff here that shows my current process step by step: learn.generastudios.com/spotify-growth-machine For your album you can't really pull it and re-release it as singles. You CAN do it, but Spotify won't consider each song a new song, they'll know it was released unless you change the audio files enough.

Generally testing more ads and more audiences is the way you get cost down. I also wouldn’t optimize for landing page views, I’d rather do conversions for when people convert on the landing page. would you say theres a limit on how many diff target audiences you should have in the ad set? like if i'm doing similar artists, can i have ten different ad sets and then optimize from there or will the money be spread too thin from the start?
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on your daily budget. If you had $10/day i'd probably only do 3 ad sets with 3 ads in each. If you had $20/day i'd do like 5 ad sets with 3 ads in each. Basically I aim for $4-$5 per ad set per day, at least when launching the campaign, over time when it gets data its fine if your budget goes down and you still have the same number of ad sets. The theoretical limit is $1/day/ad set but thats cutting it too thin in my experience for this type of campaign.

On the topic of "Saves" being the most important thing, do you include the option to "Save" your song in your Hypeddit landing page? Or do you just leave it as "Play" and then hope people save it once they get to Spotify?
@tvman7916
@tvman7916 3 ай бұрын
The problem with this now is it looks like they removed the option to set a daily limit and instead want to force a minimum reach of 200,000 and at the same time removing a lot of these options doubles or triples your campaign cost. You basically can't do what is shown here anymore, unless I'm missing something.
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 3 ай бұрын
No you can still set daily spending limits, there is no reach requirement of any sorts. Not sure where you're seeing this, but my guess is you're in the wrong place. Things are pretty much exactly the same as shown in this video, sans a few subtle changes or buttons being moved around.

I believe 1 day click 7 day view, honestly I just use the default haha. You'd only want 7 day click if you were selling something relatively substantial where someone might leave the page open for several days before buying, or if they'd search you up later to buy. For music 1 day click is sufficient.

Same question here too. But I found Andrew's reply on another comment. About Asian countries: "Often they result in cheap conversions but very little follow through on Spotify. Sometimes it works fine but i've seen enough people get burned that I don't recommend people try it." One critical thing is to double check the ratio ad click to spotify listener. Unfortunately I can't do that on my side since the track I am promoting is within an album, not a single. Also I have set my campaign to all spotify countries, so I don't know how many clicks I get per country. What I can tell on the Spotify side, Indian listeners are the best compared to other countries. I have a ratio listener to track save as high as 75%. But I have no idea how many drop offs I had from India. Meaning, I got 1000 listeners from there in the last 28 days, but I might also have had 2000 drop offs, which might have hurt my Spotify popularity score. No idea. Frankly, Spotify dashboard, though it looks nice, is pretty rubbish :-/. We have to do a lot of guess work and additional maths. Hope it improves soon.

Very curious about why you don't run on reels. I have actually had very good results with reels in some markets. Certain markets do seem to only render meaningless engagements (likes) though, so maybe this is what you're referring to. This style of ad is indeed a loose fit for reels altogether as well so that may have something to do with it too.

Do I create a single campaign with one ad set per Spotify entity (playlist, song)? Or should I create one campaign for songs with each song as ad set and another campaign for playlist with each playlist as ad set? Or another structure? Also do you know what could have made FB now always error out after I upload a video into an ad? I did do a separate retargeting campaign actually, just not shown here. Basically I retargeted people who converted previously at a small budget, and stuck with a traffic campaign to a separate Hypeddit page for tracking. Does not adding a Spotify incentive to your advertisement make it more likely that the ad will charge you for what will prove to be fewer conversions when the Spotify free listeners are alienated by the landing page? As in - if people KNEW before they clicked that they would be taken to Spotify, do you think they would be less likely to click “Learn More” or whatever the incentive was, because they’d anticipate the shuffle thing/the cost of the ad would be less? If this were the case, I am not sure what would stop people from adding the song to one of their playlists. Usually people don’t want to listen to something straight away, do they? Maybe having a link tree to take them to KZbin would help - for the immediate access and then Spotify as well, seeing as that was what the advert was for… I have no idea 😩 I do not know much/anything about digital ads, so please take this with a grain of salt!

@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 жыл бұрын
Its based off of the end result, in this case Spotify numbers. KZbin ads are the best for promoting KZbin videos and getting views on it, but it doesn't translate well cross platform. TikTok ads work but they're quite tricky to get a good campaign and often its quite expensive per result. Facebook ads i've found give me not only the best translation to Spotify results but the most cross platform results from social media channels to even KZbin as well, just from the FB ad.
