Excellent video. I finally understand Callet's embochure diagrams and how to employ them!

HI Rich welcome back, great to see you make more videos on TCE. It has always been for me no matter how simple the spit buzz ought to be I continually question "am I doing it right". I have wanted this approach to work for me for such a long time. The real mystery for me comes after step 1 wide tongue on bottom lip (all good) then like @1:44 once the lips are closed the mention of pushing the tongue forward to end up in a position @1:47 where the tongue shape has changed as the tip of the tongue is no longer visible. So this now means the tip of the tongue is anchored somewhere and the forward push of the tongue is causing it to curl over. If I said the front part of the tongue is in contact with the back of lower teeth and the middle area of the tongue touches the upper teeth would this be what you experience or should it be that the front part of the tongue is in contact with the bottom lip and the middle area of the tongue touches the upper teeth? @1:51 and @4:33 there seems to be a pronounced curl of the bottom lip under the top lip or am I seeing this wrong? Looking at the BARB (LOL) Civeletti approach you demonstrate it appears that both the tongue and the lips may vibrate. Is that what happens when playing, both vibrate? In other words do you feel a vibration on the surface of the tongue as well as the lips when playing? By the way I am still looking for a TCE mouthpiece to suit my Yamaha YFH631 Flugal Horn.

Hi Wayne, It is ok for the tip of the tongue to end up behind the bottom teeth so long as the tongue wedge is curled forward and you can still feel the top of the tongue with both lips. This is the set-up that was published with the DVD that Jerome Callet brought out around 2007 and is how I started with the technique. Over time I grew to prefer the instructions from the Trumpet Secrets book, which keeps the tip of the tongue between the teeth. I can email these instructions to you if you like. In either set up the top surface of the tongue would still need to be making contact with the top lip, which is the one that does the vibrating. At times you can feel a tickle of the lip vibrating against the tongue, but I wouldn't describe it as though the tongue itself is vibrating. I also wouldn't say that the tongue replaces the bottom lip, which is how some assume it works. As for the bottom lip curling - I get asked this a lot and it's one of the few things, like jaw position, that I don't tend to recommend that you put much conscious thought into. I think that things have ended up the way they are for me as a result of working on the exercises that make up the system, rather than as a result of me purposely putting the bottom lip in that place. Full disclosure - I had a lesson with Jerome Callet once when he did instruct me to curl the bottom lip in but I think this is a much less extreme action than most would assume. The movements we make with the embouchure are tiny so doing something as extreme as purposely curling the tongue over the bottom teeth sounds wrong to me. As for the flugel mouthpiece - I'll email you about that tomorrow. I think I've got your email address.

Wow! I just got this. The detail of this question is part of the challenge. I’ve been working with Ralph Salamone, an ardent Callet disciple, in working through a career threatening challenge. He has gotten my through it. My plan was to build back better, and his approach had worked wonders for me. I one one DHCs almost any time I want and can summon F/DHC in almost any practice session. I’m working with Ralph, I was trying to focus on extreme details and he backed me away from that. He wanted me to focus on the method, get the feel and develop a distinct pop in my attacks. He pointed out that we each have different physical characteristics and the way it looks for him would most likely look different for me. I will tell you what I am aware of. Instead of thinking of tongue arch, I think of tongue forward, and think (up and down - vertical thickness). I am very aware of the tip of my tongue gently nudging the top of my bottom lip all the time. I don’t think of my tongue vibrating-don’t think it does. I am also very careful not to overblow. I can now muster a huge volume of sound with very little air. I am trying to use as little air as possible. I still practice long hours, but in increments. I NEVER play till my chops quit! I use a 1SB, a 1SC (on C trumpet) and the equivalent to a 1SB on flugel (all purchased from Ralph). I also include at LEAST an hours worth of physical workout in my practice day - exercise bike, kettlebells, body weight exercise and walking. In for a penny in for a pound!

Very interesting, and I'm not even a horn player! I'm wondering does this discussion also apply to other things like trombone and tuba?

Oh absolutely. There are things you can do with horn and trumpet that you wouldn’t bother with on larger brass but the tongue thru the teeth and spitting for attacks, using as little air as necessary… it works for all brass.

What's your opinion on James Morrison? He has the best embrouchure in my opinion! I talked with Jerry and brought his videos and books! He was unique!

James has great chops and such an even/uniform sound!! Bahb Civiletti actually believes that he uses the tongue through the lips without realising it. What I see is a great example of the forward, padded, relaxed embouchure that we should all be striving for. In his book Morrison talks of being taught to "spit seeds" in his first lessons - this is the classic tongue thru the teeth indicator that I've discussed a lot.

Hi Rich It does not take that long to find out holding the tonque on lower lip but I Wonder how much to compress lip/lip and tonque. Do you have a take on that? Erik Denmark
@BrassPractice
@BrassPractice Жыл бұрын
For spit buzzing you want to keep it all relaxed. If you find yourself trying to buzz scales and tunes with you lips, which causes you to tense the lips and/or tongue then stop. When you transfer the spit attack to the trumpet keep the tongue forward and anchored all the time but everything must be relaxed as much as you can. You can start gripping the tongue more or pushing the tongue forward (depending which way you look at it) as you get above the staff. Keep the same spitting sensation and sound in all ranges.
