What people often forget is where the concept of the metaverse actually comes from. The term originated from Neal Stephensons "Snow Crash", a science fiction novel from 1992. In it, the various nations and governments broke down and there are just so called "franchises" left, basically cities controlled by corporations. So people flee into the so-called "Metaverse", which is essentially one giant empty room where people can program things and create content. It is not controlled by any company. In fact, the entire book is a dystopian parody-like (the main characters name is literally Hiro Protagonist) commentary on the threat of mega corporations. The fact that Meta wants to advertise their highly controlled corporate environment as a metaverse is pretty ironic in my opinion.

It’s Walmart if Walmart started out as a university shop and then expanded to selling everything. Zuck still thinks his core demographic is young adults with disposable time and income, but it’s actually mostly older adults. Most older adult are fundamentally uninterested or unable to invest in the new tech required for the metaverse. That’s why they’re hanging out on Facebook instead of any of the trendier social media spaces.

Honestly I'm glad you mentioned Roblox as a metaverse or semi-metaverse platform. It may not be immediately obvious, but legitimately Roblox already offers you most of the things a metaverse would gaming-wise and social-wise. It's actually a pretty big platform too. The only thing that really kind of holds it back is that a lot of people imagine a metaverse in VR and most Roblox games don't support VR.

The reason the US was so panicked about TikTok during Trump's office time was because they realised that China was getting in the user data mining game and they were actually pretty successful at it too... In this day and age data is power, cause data can be used for far more than simply creating an advertisement algorithm, data can be used to literally shape the opinion of the common folk and one's virtual avatar is far more valuable than their actual real world life cause that can't be used for them to be controlled so methodically, no media has enough power to convince someone that what they believe is their own personal and well structured idea, than social media.

I'm glad Muta called out the fact that, no, Facebook isn't dying. The big failures here aren't in getting people to carry on using the site. Whether new people will sign up to be on it is another matter, but still, FB's failure is down to them constantly trying to do things that their customers don't want them to do. They are spending vast sums of money on attempts to *increase* the amount of money that they can make from the platform. If you imagine a brick-and-mortar shop that sells cakes or something, that business can just keep selling cakes, maybe make a new type of cake now and then - but it's providing a service, and it's a service that people aren't going to stop wanting just because cake isn't new to them anymore. What Facebook is doing is the equivalent of a cake store that's turning a modest profit deciding that it wants to branch out into, like, magical sentient cakes that cry whenever you're not eating them. Even if they could actually achieve that... no one wants them to. Point being, despite that, people will still buy cakes because cakes are still nice. And the cake shop will still keep going, as long as it doesn't let its ambitions of making self-aware weeping cakes impact too much on its ability to deliver ordinary, non-sentient, non-weeping cake. It just won't make as much money as it could.

One thing I don't see talked about often when people talk about the 'metaverse', either for or against them, is that a significant percentage of the population just...can't play virtual reality stuff? Like I can't play VR games because something with the experience makes me super sick and/or gives me killer headaches. I've tried everything people typically suggest to solve the issues, but none of it has worked. And all my family is the same, except when they had a bad first try, they had little interest in trying again. There's loads of people who can't play VR for various reasons, so the attempt at making it such a big prominent thing to life is falling flat with those people.

I remember my Facebook first came out, are used to receive notifications that my friends visit in certain stores or places, and likedcertain things. They told me which stores in which cities they went to, and I’m sure that they did not want that to be known to all of their friends. The last straw for me was when I listened to a certain radio station, and Facebook announced that I listen to it to all of my friends.I was never aware that they were going to do that, now imagine what they do with all of your data that you don’t know about.

I wanna point out that usually without competition, a manufacturer starts losing the need to improve or lower prices, or in general do things to be 'more enticing than the others in the industry' Tho ofc theres a chance that, if vr headsets made by meta are super overpriced, other companies might feel comfortable lowering prices if meta's are off the market (but, I just feel its unlikely)

It'll prevent Fuckerburg from getting a stranglehold on the VR market which is going to be crucial for the future of VR gaming if not gaming as a whole. The Quest 2 is a very nice, well-designed piece of hardware, but the way their software and TOS is can fuck right-off. I miss the days when they were just called "Oculus," and Facebook *needs* to fall. I assure you it *will* be a win for gamers. No more games like RE4 being locked-down to their Draconian, anticonsumer platform- for starters.

One thing I’ve noticed with Horizon’s marketing is it always has extremely bright, flat lighting, which certainly isn’t good when you want people to spend hours and hours in your world. I avidly play vrchat and you’ll notice that popular worlds there tend to be very dark, because it’s far more comfortable to spend long times in dimmer places than this bright flashy style this has. I dunno, just an observation I had

There is only one VR Game I always come back to: Elite: Dangerous. There is just nothing out there that compares to sitting in the cockpit of your ASP Explorer at the edge of the Galaxy, looking back our home, the Orion Arm of the Milky Way, and plotting your way further and further outwards, wondering how far you can go and if you manage to come back intact, one day. This is something I recommend you to try out Mutah, Elite:Dangerous in VR. Avoid the FPS stuff and the grind, just get a cheap ship, like the eagle or maybe grind a bit for an ASP Explorer and jus fly out.

Edit: Basically he said Facebook wouldn't be making such a fuss about AR/VR if they really didn't believe that it was A Future as opposed to The Future. Speaking as a software engineer, if Facebook goes under the engineers should be fine. There's never been a higher demand than there is now, they'll likely end up with more money and less stress. I've played with the idea of virtual reality, steam has a "virtual desktop" that looked interesting...is Oculus a good starter than? (My eventual goal is the valve index or their upcoming version that's integrated with steam deck)...

Their metaverse should be more like vr chat and the headset should be recommended but optional. More people would be interested if you can jump in on your pc or current hardware and it should function like a pc game. Or like second life where users had more control over the experience and you could upload your own models. Anything would be better than what they have now.

VR is something I'm very interested in making use of as a teacher. There are programs like Nanome and Calcflow which we can use to teach chemistry and mathematics. It would be fun to see more educators streaming educational VR in places like Twitch

Good point with the "successful companies force you into their infrastructure" thing. I mean, right now we're using Google's platforms, where they have a search engine, a browser, a mobile store, multiple operating systems, cloud storage, etc. Microsoft does the same to an extent with their OS, business software, and cloud services. Amazon also runs product delivery, streaming, and server hosting. Facebook has tried to diversify with three social networks and a VR company, but it's not as big.

Though I gotta say something, if let's say all your computer applications are available on your VR headset the same way and it's fully integrated. I might actually think of using it. Everyone know how useful having two monitor really is. But what if you could just have 4 or 5 and boost your workspace. That would honestly be freaking epic. I wouldn't be so naive to think such a huge company with smart people working for them would take thier company to the ground. they liquidated thier assets to hard cash to build meta, the first phase of the metaverse was horrible but in this current phase with the quest 2, im exited for the VR and AR use cases but not so much with facebooks metaverse
