Unbelievable, I had this bike about 6 years ago, it gave nothing but trouble, there is an issue with the loom also, one day it will run fine and the next it won't, head light will also come on when you engage the steering lock, it had oil cooler issues too, so I sold it as a breaker and can't believe it's somewhat still on the road, best of luck bud as I think you'll need it
@newmotorcycleguy

wow! this is news i did not want to read! the guy i bought it from said nothing of this! But he did show me lots of photos of him travelling around on it. I feel he had the issue I'm having, didn't tell me and had it stood till the mug (me) came along, I am having an electrical issue at the moment with starting it. To be honest I'm really enjoying working through this bike, I've actually seen a complete loom for 100 quid if worse comes to worst! if you have any parts for it I'm in Leeds! although i do feel this licence plate is worth more than the bike!

i have just serviced my bandit 1200 it would start but cut out when throttle was applied i stripped the carbs twice checked the vaccume system and finally narrowed it down to fuel contamination i drained the tank and found water in it i drained the carbs put fresh fuel in and now it runs like a dream but i now have to look at my filler cap and have a plastic bag over the tank incase it rains i figured it out by turning the tank upside down with fuel in it and it came out of the filler cap and this made me realize if fuel is coming out then water is getting in 👍

Nothing wrong with the air filter it looks fine and I don't think you have been scammed. The carbs on these are very easy to clean, yet you may need new boots that go between the carbs and the airbox due to the age of the bike they can become very brittle. The carbs can be a bit of a struggle to get back in, make sure to remove the airbox to give you more room. Go over the the banditforum and pick up the haynes manual from there, if you are stuck they will be able to help.

I got a pdf workshop manual. These are notorious for carb issues, they ar3 Kehin CVK Carbs, Buy a rebuild kit for carbs, the fuel tap is vaccume operated, unless you select prime. Just needs a good carb clean and rebuild the tap, my advice would be put a small o ring behind the spring of the diaphram in tap. Use Denso spark plugs.

I owned a later model 2000 naked Bandit bought used in mint condition in 2004 low miles 600cc . I owned it for about 17 years it never missed a beat . I am self taught home mechanic with over 50 years biking & spannering experience on small ,medium & large motorcycles . My advice is to clean tank out , maybe reseal coat the inside . Fit new or overhaul the pet cock new seals & fuel lines , fit in line fuel filter , remove carbs ,clean bowls , Jets ,check float heights ,& float needles & seats , clear out all drillings & clean carbs . Refit carbs , check inlet & exhaust valves , & adjust ( simple lock nut & screw adjustment ) check spark plugs & caps & leads fit new air filter . Fit temporary fuel supply & use vacuum gauges to balance carbs . Once running correctly refit tank & making sure all vacuum pipes & fuel lines & breathers are fitted firmly & correctly . Haynes & factory workshop manuals should be easy to obtain for Bandits as they were very popular bikes , & many factory parts & good quality aftermarket parts available new & used . Unless these bikes are owned & ridden by complete philistines , they are virtually bulletproof & very reliable . 👍

@@newmotorcycleguy Yeah, the "filter" you're replacing inside the tank on the inlets is just a screen for debris, not a proper filter. And the "nasty fuel hose" that goes in the side of the carbs is a vacuum hose to open the petcock when the engine starts, so it's probably a good thing to replace. Best of luck.

looking at that bike i very much doubt you were scammed its way too clean and the problems seem minute thh i sold my all weather use B600 0n a 96 plate 33000 mls for £750 because of ULEZ laws or i would still have it today . Brilliant engine proper work horse good for 100,000 miles i never dealt with 4 stroke engines but with youtube and the workshop books i manged to strip the whole top of engine to get broken exhaust studs removed and successfully reassembled included valve clearances cam chain re install and carb strip clean and jet replacement from a Yamaha Fazer with no prior experience so you will get that thing sorted for sure. In winter i recommend spraying exposed wires with AC-50 ANTI CORROSIN spray to preven moisture getting in to electrical connections so good luck and see you out on the road maybe that fuel tank needs a new petrol cap seal

I'm a mechanic and a biker and the fuel tap looks like it's also a pulse pump. You need to make sure that the pulse pipe hasn't got any leaks, otherwise the pulse pump won't work. Then take it for a run before stripping the carbs.

@chrissyb5447
@chrissyb5447 Ай бұрын
That petcock in the on position only allows fuel flow to your carburettors when vacuum is applied to the back of the diaphragm acting against a return spring. When vacuum is removed ( engine stopped ) the return spring forces the diaphragm back to it`s rest position which cuts off fuel supply to the carburettors. The small clear pipe that connects between the front of one your carburettors to the petcock needs to be in good order to maintain a vacuum to prevent non-start and/or running issues. The other positions on the petcock ( prime and reserve ) bypass the diaphragm. It`s common practice to replace these petcocks with more conventual items because with wear/age the diaphragm can stick in one position or cause inadequate fuel flow.

At the end of the day its a 27 year old bike just hope you paid accordingly as theres always a few trying to sell for thousands. They are great bikes that can take lots of abuse, when re fitting the tank be careful about kinking the fuel hose they seem really fussy if theres even the slightest of fuel restriction. Good that you have rebuilt the fuel tap they have a common problem of leaking fuel into the carbs then through the cylinders and filling the sump with fuel. Good luck with it definitely worth spending a bit of money to get it running right I did 15,000 miles on a mk1 600 with no problems after very similar symptoms when I bought it.

Think the tank is the same capacity as my 1200 so, it's 19 Liters. The petcock needed be rebuilt anyway as they have a tendency to "let go" and you'll come to your garage one day and wonder why it stinks of petrol? Then you notice the contents of the tank pooled around the bike on the floor! It happened on my 97 Bandit. Good luck with your maintenance and I'll keep tabs on this as it's pretty interesting! PS - I'd recommend using "Shell V Power" as your fuel or something similar, definitely don't use regular E10.

Although not new I doubt that air filter is more than a few thousand miles old, from its condition. Not long ago Suzuki had the fuel taps available new for not a massive amount. Not much more than just a rebuild kit. Might be worth checking. Should be a "Prime" position on the tap so the tap does not rely on the vacuum to flow. Check that there is no water in the carbs. Water sinks to the bottom of the tank , so can build up then go into the carbs when the rider switches to reserve. Often easiest to just take the plastic knob off the tap. 1 screw and it makes it easier to lift the tank off. Getting carbs on and off a Bandit is far harder than it should be! Undo the mount bolts on the side of the airbox so it can slide back a bit
